NEXT First Impressions

Got my ferite problem figured out, there’s space stations that stock a good amount of it. Grind is fine if it drives you to find a solution to avoid it, and if such a solution does in fact exists, so I’m good with that.
Now, do some space stations stock copper? Because I need unholy amounts of it to start repairing that broken multitool a helpful Vykeen gave me (even as damaged as it was, it was still way better than my starting tool).

Another cool moment was had when I landed on a planet with frenzied sentinels (because survival mode…). There were dogs on patrol in addition to drones. Might be there are walkers about in the wild too, but with my current equipment all I could do was take a peek and dust off again.

Yeah, it’s a fairly common mechanic in crafting games. But I’m looking forward to seeing how deep it goes. Need a bigger refinery first. Need to find burried tech. Doesn’t seem to be much of it around on the planet I have my base on currently.
Also, guilds are now handing out photo-missions. Photo mode just became a game mechanic!

Well I thought this was an exploration game with crafting only to facilitate the exploration, but I guess they decided to change that.

The addition of intermediary steps for item creation was a great idea. Yes, a lot of games that have crafting as a major feature do have refining…it is great to see it finally in NMS! -)

I suspect there are/will be more intermediary steps currently/in the near future to be added to help slow down/add detail to the game.

Yes! I’ve heard a lot of people talking about how frustrating it is and have re-started but the process of reverse engineering your progress is also fun.

Just seeing the new climbing ladder animations… they feel really natural and easy, good work HG!

The jumping animations of the wiggling legs are brilliant too!

Well… I’m lost. Like an idiot I forgot about the launch date and stuck myself a bazillion miles from where I wanted to be. NO base, so no way to get back to my world, which may well be some dead airless thing, or an acid vat anyhow. But I was used to that neighborhood.

Getting seriously tired of HG reinventing freaking EVERYTHING without so much as a “How to put your boots on” tutorial. I can’t really do anything because everything is busted and obsolete, no way to really know how to maintain ANYTHING.

HG, “NEXT” time, don’t do this. The last update didn’t leave me afraid to even RUN because I have no idea how to power my suit. Oh, and thanks for turning all the materials in my inventory to random stuff…

So, WHEN is some helpful soul going to make a “Help a fellow Traveler get NEXT figured out”??

@stryker99 These issues are definitely important for a game such as NMS where people tend to stick to their old save files. You should make a list of things to improve and send it to zendesk!
In the meantime, consider the following for coming home again:

  • aren’t your old discoveries present in the menu? I’m thinking you could choose a waypoint on one of your pre-NEXT discoveries and then warp there
  • do you have any coords or glyph addresses of any of your pre-NEXT worlds? you should still be able to locate a portal and move to your home system again. Even though this is more tedious, it is a possible solution
  • can’t you just use a teleporter at a space station? your base “should” be available in the list of possible destinations.

As far as the new items/tech/substances are concerned, I actually like them much better once I got the hang of it. Crafting seems more logical now, following a deeper logic than just creating advanced tech from raw minerals or plants (for the most part anyway).

Hey. I suppose in order:

  • I’m definitely sticking with my old save file. I want to be the same person I started with on this strange journey.
  • Some of my old discoveries are there. The names are not just slightly different now, naturally, they’re WILDLY different, so I only have a rough idea of how they correlate to my Wordpad travel journal. And of course almost all of the data is likely wrong.
  • Actually, I reminded myself in a dream about the glyphs and addresses - funny things those dreams. I have yet to try anything out because I’m afraid to go anywhere. I went to a dead planet and immediately angered the Sentinels, which ended up in me being hounded by Sentinel ships! Whatever happened to “Get in your ship to clear a bounty”?? I had to quit because I had no idea how to repair my ship as they shot me to pieces. So I’m not doing ANYTHING until someone posts a thread on “How to survive and thrive in this bizarre NEXT universe.”
  • I was at a space station and there were no teleporter points at all. I know my base is in a recycle bin I can supposedly get back, but I had hoped this universe would remember the ports I had used previously.
  • I watched a quick overview, and apparently, crafting anything takes much longer. Oh Lord…

Well, I really don’t want to play until I have SOME idea of what to do. It looks like resources are a LOT harder to come by and I only have so much storage space. Which right now is full of substances I have no idea what they are or what they’re good for. So I’ll be waiting for NEXT 101 before I play another minute of this weird critter. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

You could also play a new game for a few hours to get the hang of it. The tutorial introduces most new systems (doesn’t explain them in detail, but you’ll have at least some idea of what goes on).

@stryker99 Are you on PC/Steam? We can coordinate a co-op and help each other out, both fighting sentinels and getting you off your dead rock of a planet!

Gimme a shout if you’re up for it.

I agree. I would advise everyone to start a new game and run through the “tutorial”. I’m not saying you have to keep it or use it, just play it long enough to learn the basics.

Fleet Command Room

I just learned we need one separate room per active mission .

So we can not use the same terminal for various missions? Really?

I found that out yesterday as well. I’m going to send some feedback to the Hello Games Zendesk about it, because I have about ten more ships than I need.

I’m doing that as well!

While everyone is getting a feel for the post-NEXT “updated Simulation” environment . . .

… anyone BRAVE enough to test out Sentinel Surfing in NEXT…?!?

We’d like to see your SCREENSHOTS of you (or your mates in CoOp), riding on the back of a Sentinel (Drone).
Starting TODAY / NOW and over these next 3 months (through Halloween),
we aim to collect / collate a variety of Sentinel Surfing snaps,
and will put them to the wider Community, to pick out THE BEST PIX for Recognition!!

If you think hitching a ride on the back of a drone is “easy”,
don’t miss out on a few suggested “Challenge” Categories.

The thread is freshly opened. We look forward to seeing YOUR submissions!

:sunglasses: :+1:

I decided to start fresh, and boy was it a challenge. SO many things have changed. Luckily, I managed to stumble on an exploit (fixed in 1.51) where if you placed 2 portable refineries next to each other, the second one would duplicate the contents of the first. It took a few hours, but I managed to rack up 60 million units worth of goods. Enough to buy a half decent A class fighter with lots of spending money left over.

What were you making to acquire decent profit?
I’d like to get myself a better starship but I’m not sure which of the basic products early in the game fetch the best price.

That’s the thing… I wasn’t making anything. All you had to do was to fill the ‘input’ slot of the 1st refiner. Then place the 2nd refiner next to it and open it up, and the input slot would duplicate the first refiner. To repeat it, you have to pick up the second refiner and place it back down. The other stupid thing is that the refiner seems to accept ‘anything’ in the input slot. I used Salvaged Technology modules.

As I said previously, this has been fixed in 1.51, but if you haven’t updated to that yet… enjoy. :sunglasses:

edit - I should add I’m playing on a PS4, so can’t vouch for it working on other platforms.

This bug is fixed in 1.52.
The energy-conservation breaking perputal crafting loop between di-hidrogen and di-hidrogen jelly has not been addressed yet, however.

After playing for about 10 hours, I have only found one thing that I really dislike when compared to Atlas Rises: Pirates are whimps now. Even with a completely unupgraded starter ship, the poor buggers can’t even make a dent in my shield, even if there’s three of them. That’s… not what I expect from survival mode.

All the rest is good or great, with some average thrown in. I do miss touches of brilliance though. Don’t get me wrong, the experience is good, I’m loving the game, but purely in terms of game mechanics there’s nothing where I stopped so far and had to say “ok, that’s just genious”. All very good crafsmanship, but nothing really exceptional.
That sounds a bit negative, so I do want to make clear that I’m only talking in terms of game mechanics here. There’s plenty of brilliance in the engine, which is truly the reigning champion of graphical procedural generation now. Maybe one day they’ll manage both.
