Old Travellers, New Tricks

Just noticed this thread.

For me the biggest difference making later than it should have been discovery was reducing the terrain manipulator beam when harvesting a surface deposit. When I discovered that I had already played many many saves.

On the subject of terrain manipulator. We’ve had the flatten tool for a long time and I only realised today it’s perfect for digging straight and level tunnels.

I found water on a gas giant but max depth was 14u so I went tunneling with it to see if the bedrock terrain dipped from the level I was locked to. It also seems to have a further reach than the default mode.

Yeah, after much searching I also found water on a gas giant - but it was accessed via a cave, was very shallow, and very localised. I haven’t found anythig you could call an ocean, or even a lake. A small underground pond is the best I’ve found.

The descriptor for the gas fish when caught is they make their home on “small pools of liquid that form under the centre of their gaseous home” or something like that.

So it’s certainly the way they seem to be. The bedrock just seems to stay at a constant level on all gas giants I’ve visited so far, the flat land gas giant seems the most common from my experience, but I know there’s versions that are a lot more mountain valley in style.

I just noticed there’s a new (I think) UI indicator in the bottom left of the screen where it shows current depth while swimming

It is a max depth display and will tell you the max depth of the water you’re currently in, even from the waters surface.

I’ve still been swimming down to the sea floor this whole time. It gives a more accurate reading too.

My excuse is I’ve been sitting far away from the screen to notice the small read out :stuck_out_tongue:

I noticed this too. Would be nice if it showed from space

I sorely want a max terrain height or at least a current terrain height tracker now.

So we can be scientific and properly compare the new terrain height generation to the old systems  :test_tube:

I would like to do this too. That very shallow sea I found was on a very small moon. There must be a max depth/height or something govening planets

For those wondering about the new JellyBoss encounter and how to summon it now that it’s in the base game…

You will need to fish a Child of Aquarius out of the ocean.

This is an unlisted fish that doesn’t belong to any of the fishing pools and can be found in any biome at any depth. It’s all just a matter of chance.

You can increase this chance (I think, I’m assuming/praying) by fishing in shallower water to decrease the catch pool, and I use bionic lures just in case it helps with this fish, it’s not really in any rarity category so hard to say.

Once you have their kids, you make the phone call with your demands and remember, no cops! If we see a cop, your kids are as good as dead!

Basically just release it back in the water… Is what the next step is.

Beating the boss also brings some rewards

Edit: While there doesn’t seem to be a space in the fishing tab of the wonders catalogue, it does seem to record the record weight of a child of Aquarius when caught.

Having spent some more time fishing in different depths with no lure or bionic lure, I can confirm shallow water in any biome with bionic lure is the surest way to catch them. It’s all down to luck after that, you could go fifteen minutes and catch one or catch two in five minutes.

May the currents be kind to you, Travellers <3

WOW!!!

And a special thanks to @BoomstickJoe

Today, after 1400+ hours playing, I learned that even if there are ‘no nearby hotspots’ the survey visor will give a different audible ping when it is pointed at the closest one!!!

Those who have known this all along may not understand my enthusiasm.

For those with profound hearing loss, distinguishing by pitch is problematic. Is there any visual indicator?

None that I’ve ever noticed. Of course I always just took the text, “no nearby hotspots,” as all there was to get. It is possible there is some difference in the frequency of the visual ‘pulse.’ Now that I know there is more going on than I thought, I dunno just how much really is going on.

It works basically like a metal detector. There is a visual cue when scanning but it has been so long since I have used it…

I have a curious take on this - for years now, I’ve played the game with the sound off. And the visual display does kind of “twitch” at ranges beyond that which gives a definite reading - but I’ve found this distant indication so unreliable that I haven’t bothered with it. It’s a project now. I’ll do some experiments. It will keep me out of trouble.

Not sure if this is a trick or a bug or a feature.

I’ve had Laylaps the blue drone as my constant companion since acquiring him, (PS5 Permadeath).
Yes, he gets in the way while scanning & only has one phrase if you interact but I found his presence a useful reminder that I’m in permadeath & to always watch what I’m doing.
Anyway…
Everytime I’m on an angry Sentinel planet, Laylaps ‘eye’ glows red & he faces off against all the other drones when they discover me & it is a stand-off… with no shots fired.
The sentinels will nudge me & swarm around me but never do they fire.
So long as I stay out of my ship, they simply glare at me while Laylaps bobs about eyeing them all off.
Laylaps may sometime throw a couple of warning shots but it never escalates.

I have no idea if this is supposed to be what happens & I’m to dull to have noticed or if it is a ‘secret’ perk to having Laylaps as a sidekick.

If it’s a bug, I’m guessing this might be related to the fact riding your pet also gives temporary peace from sentinel drones.

However it works, its kind of nice just ignoring all the hateful looks & poking about doing my own thing.
Would be interested to know if it works for anyone else.

Sounds like we have ourselves a classic mexican stand off. Now on the count of three, draw!

!!!

Because of this I can honestly say that I have never had any opportunity to see if the behavior you describe would happen or not since I always carry him in storage. In fact, as soon as that storyline is complete the flare generally gets stuffed in a storage container. I will have to investigate, but honestly that sounds very much like an intentional feature.

It’s possible to get Aqua Jets for your living ship, it has a chance to be one of the rewards from a Psychonic Egg, and will be named a Saline Carapace.

For those who are unaware, you can get living ship tech modules and upgrades via frigate fleet expeditions, by sending Organic Frigates on missions.

Psychonic Eggs will give you new tech or class upgrade modules, Spawning sacs will allow you to add more storage/tech space to a living ship, uses directly within your menu, no need to visit a ship upgrade terminal.

Thought this info might be worth resharing since we all just got a shiny new Living Ship that has no aqua jets

10 posts were split to a new topic: Stranded On Water

I went visiting some of the community bases shared on our forum at long last, been meaning to since last weekend.

What I’ve discovered is you cannot add another players base to your favourites from the teleporter list. I was starting to think the feature may only be for making a short list for people who have created a lot of bases.

I decided to try one more thing and returned home via the player bases space station.

You can add Space Stations to your favourites, so this is one way (maybe the only way for now) to add another players base (or bases if more than one in system) to your list for handy return visits.
