Living Ships

@gunnar, beacons are your friends!

The first grave was close to a base, the second was not, there are no beacons nearby.

The method I use, (& probably the most common) is to only use the compass as a guide for flight corrections only.

The simplest method is to fly at an angle as in NE or SW or whatever.

Float in a loose circle until both ā€˜counters’ are cycling in the desired direction.
One counter is +90 > 0 > -90 counting all the way from one end to the other, then back again as you circle the planet from north to south and back again.
The other counter goes from +180 > 0 > -180
and also counts all the way from one end to the other and back again as you circle the planet from East to West and back again.
Each 0 >max is a hemisphere, each perpendicular to each other. (See pic)
(You’ll notice if you line up exactly N/S that one counter pretty much stops moving because you are moving on that same line directly north…or south)

Once you get your counters scrolling in the desired direction, you’ll find that altering course very slightly left or right alters the speed of the counters allowing you to tweak your course.
Sometimes you’ll find you are on the opposite side of the planet to where you want to be. This is frustrating but is still only a matter of getting the counters scrolling the way you want them to, to get the shortest possible route. (You can zip out into space and come back in but I’ve had mixed results trying that).

As you close in on your desired co ordinate, tweak the directions to slow your counters so you can as near as possible match your intended location & float really slowly.
Land, then do the rest by visor scanner using back and forth, left and right to get your direction nice.

I did notice that the graves show up on the ship radar if you are really close so I would bash ā€˜land’ while circling.

I now understand why HG havent put in any E W markers on the compass, as unlike the opposite measurement, there are no poles to use as a termination point to reset the direction *
Although, now I think of it, it should just be a matter of having the markers on the compass relative to the N &S markers with no connection to the meridian… there must be some reason they couldn’t do it

Edit:
As for storms, I found flying quite high, just below the clouds allows you to keep the coordinates on screen but keeps you out of the tree tops and mountainsides.

Good luck. I hope this ramble was useful and doesn’t add to the confusion.

Yes, above method works. Then you have to deal with the coordinates refining themselves. This refining process becomes more involved with each 24 hour period. I landed frequently and scanned with my visor for nearby graves. Beacons do help as @Polyphemus stated. I was amazed at how close I was to the target sometimes. My beacons would make a spiral that curved in towards the objective. Almost like the game was toying with me. Curse the Atlas. I think it deliberately kept my objective hidden from me.
Note though, the last mission did mess up for a number of players. I had to leave the planet and return so the last set of coordinates would refine.

I found the misbehaving coordinates would jump only about 5 points either way so I’d just pick a spot sort of in the middle and go off that. I didn’t use beacons but I did use a grid type pattern as I searched, if I was having a difficult time. I only had one grave ā€˜hide’. It simply didn’t show up on radar but luckily I stumbled over it.
I also noticed that other’s comms or markers were often NOT the grave I needed so I learned to ignore them.

So majestic!

Wsat is totally weird for me is that I haven’t encountered anything from the new extension yet.

No structures, no Atlas, no Jellyfish, Nothing. Just as the extension didn’t come out now lol.
Yesterday I made numerous jumps, space stations, several missions to get QS… but Nothing. I am saving QS to buy my first Egg now, and I’ll see from there how the discoveries goes.

The only thing I have noticed being new is while flying, a ship proposed me things to buy. Once I saw what h got for me, he just flew away, and that’s it LOL. I was like omg the guy will show me something interessting… but no.

I’ll try that later @Mad-Hatter!!

It takes a lot of pulse jetting. Set a course into empty space.
You use the same method to find living ship upgrades but you will need to be in a blue system.

After the last patch it looks like HG tweaked the chances a bit to make it less likely…
However…
Mrs Mad-Hatter has found that pulse-jetting for about 40 seconds often yields something, unless pirates or traders interrupt. Quickly calling in your freighter for an emergency pitstop and then trying again works ok.
Some systems are better than others.

Are Living Ship Upgrades only available in Blue Systems ?

I have not found them in any other system. But once I found them happening regularly in blue systems, I stopped trying other systems.

Some report that warping to an uninhabited (abandoned?) system nets better results because trader ships don’t show up in them. … just a thought

I’m pretty sure they turn up everywhere but interruptions from traders, pirates & space finds limits how lucky you get.

This game is just the bomb!

I have found them exclusively in uncharted red and green systems so far.

Is the probability higher then for blue systems? I do a lot of pulse jetting to get them to appear (~5-7 minutes for an anomaly/ special encounter.)

Something interesting I noticed about upgrades that I haven’t seen brought up yet (forgive me if it’s already been mentioned)…

The living ship upgrade modules generate their stats the same way purchased normal ship upgrade modules do. When you install an upgrade, it’s procedural stats seed is generated based on how many times you’ve previously installed ship upgrades. This install counter is recorded in your saves. If you save the game then immediately install a module, then reload that previous save and again immediately install the same module, it’ll generate the same stats. This system can be gamed by using cheaper lower-class modules to advance the counter to try to generate better stats when installing higher-class modules.

However, as far as I can tell, using nanites to upgrade installed living ship modules generates a completely random seed every time. If you save then immediately do a nanite-upgrade, then reload and immediately do the same upgrade, here the stats will be completely different. This can even result in some stats getting worse, despite the class upgrade. Of course this can also be gamed, and much more easily.

Is this new? My ship’s innards are the same color as the sentinel level on the planet I am heading towards.

First I’ve heard of this…

My living ships seem to ā€œmood-changeā€. (deep greens, rosy pinks , regular tan and stone gray most of the time.)

At first I thought it was lighting, but it became so pronounce that I double checked that the changes were also in the inventory menu. I also had the thought that the changes could be occurring depending on the recent planets I have visited…more to come on that.
