Can we use your new planet? :joy:

No, that’s where I keep the Hindenburg! I went back in time, stole it and replaced it with a cheap and highly flammable imitation.

If that’s the natural shape of it then its safe…others changing it won’t affect his game and even if it did the destroyed bits would return to their original state over time. Though NEXT might change this…one one hand it would be cool to be able to make terrain features that stick but with coop building confirmed they could also potentially be ruined by others as well, which is less than great.

@Mad-Hatter @Polyphemus @sheralmyst @Oshoryu and others: thanks for your enlightening answers!

Yes I did browse up in this thread and found all the various versions of what the logo would be for, and my subsequent confusion prompted me to ask you guys about it.

As an aspiring member of your jet-set team, I dare to reflect just for a brief second as well.
I do remember fondly the early days of Etarc and Waking Titan. I was part of that initial group joining this forum back in the day and I hence know what Etarc originally stood for. The concept of an ARG was entirely new to me, and so were my crypto-decyphering skillz. Just between us, I do feel that the novelty factor made last year’s WT more immersive than this year’s, but that might be just me being weird or something.

Anyway, therefore I do enjoy the name “Etarc CSD” or just “ECSD” for short very much. Yes, I concurr that history is important, and just like the Swedish verb for “to row” (= ro) became the name of the land that Swedish vikings had to row to cross (=Russia) in order to reach Turkey by river, names do reflect their etymologic origin. So, official name “Etarc CSD”, abbreviated “ECSD”. Personally, as an outsider: I like it.

Having that said, I have been like a lap-dog who couldn’t decide on it’s owner for more than a year when it comes to belonging/not belonging to a hub. I enrolled with some chilled-out peeps in the No Man’s Sky Love hub, but after Atlas Rises the planets became all mixed up and the hub disintegrated into smaller pieces (let alone the quintuple effect of choosing new galaxies in the story).

I have since been a loner, and actually, I have liked it and I have an equal amount of fear as curiosity for when it comes to the NEXT update. But I digress.

  • I do think that a hub should have a logotype. It’s cool, it’s nice, it adds immersion. And within NEXT, it might even become important.

EDIT: Here’s an idea. How about asking Old Gods whether we/you (ehem) can use the original ETARC logo for the hub? Just a thought…

Ok, rambling out. I’m now to sell some cheaply acquired Holographic Crankshafts to some Advanced korvaxs who don’t know I’m scamming them. Units received!

I believe this is a “key distinction”; thank you, @Mad-Hatter, for putting it so succinctly. :sunglasses: :+1:

Having taken the time to understand this community’s “background” whilst being relatively new, I’ve mostly straddled that line when referring to it:
" ETARC / Atlas CSD "
… as I’ve felt that it shows Respect to long-standing members AND (hopefully) allows other new joiners to see the connection – that they are one & the same, just under differing names.

I’ll admit, I “struggle” a bit with my OCD, to read that “ECSD” stands for “ETARC CSD”, when the E in “ETARC” stands for “Edison”! :open_mouth:  LOL :joy:

In any case, I’ve come to “like” the “ECSD” idea, which rather lines up nicely – here in the LOGO discussion – with the “4 Glyphs” idea; lines up nicely with upcoming NEXT; and, as 4 is the root of 16, touches on Root16 too. (If there turns out to be 4 major CSD groups, well…)
It’ll be nice to see the “final” discussion on Logo Options as things get refined. :sunglasses:

Open Letter to (esp 'older'/regular) Members

On my Facebook – when I DO pop in (which has been decreasing as I try to “lose less time” to it) – I have a habit of “courting controversy”, specifically because I’ve been BLESSED with a range of “circles of friends” who mostly have Brains and can put them to Mature & Honest Discussion.

Having joined ETARC / Atlas CSD here, I feel I’ve found “more like-minds”, in a community who value peaceful & mature exchange & discussion.

On FB, I’ve brought up Abortion – very difficult topic; touched on the Death Penalty; waded into politics over Trump, UK’s BrExit, Russian vote tampering (which led to both? - ha!); injustices in general, like crims not being punished for things from child abuse, to domestic violence, to rape, to manslaughter / murder due to guns, and of course the highly controversial Gun Laws / 2nd Am. bit.

I pride myself on generally keeping the peace, and most often am able to make the case for both sides, so that friends more aligned to one … are better able to appreciate the other… and I’ve had many private thanks from people for HOW I conduct my … Intelligent Discussions … and for giving some of them “new insights” they’d not considered before…

I AM ACUTELY AWARE that… in my being “new-ish” here …

… I really don’t want to “step on anyone’s toes”, etc.

I realise that my … suggestions, thoughts, opinions, … may not always be popular  but I strive always to present them in a fair and inoffensive / non-insulting way, with some Common Sense, and a measured application of some Intelligence, in the hopes that my shared audience can better appreciate “where I’m coming from” with them.

I DO HOPE that nobody’s felt ‘offended’ by any of my comments/ideas, so far.

I know it’s “easy” to become fond of something familiar; and to have an upstart come along and suggest CHANGE – and we all know, psychologically, “change” is always difficult, and as humans we typically resist change – can FEEL v much like a challenge to rip away the comforts of familiarity…

THANK YOU, @Sir_oops – post #167 – for your reply & acknowledgement.
THANK YOU, so many others, for your various responses & stated positions.

I’ve been having a GOOD TIME in here, since I joined, with MUCH support & encouragement from many of you who seem to be “regular” member participants, and I remain GRATEFUL. (I feel sure you know who you all are…)

I hope you do all recognise that I’m not here to offend anyone.
Failing that, I remain OPEN to receiving (public or) PMs; I’m not too proud to apologise to anyone I may have offended – just Let Me Know.
(PMs prolly best, actually; keep the Logo Topic “on-topic”, of course.)

Cheers, all. :sunglasses: + Thanks for taking a couple mins to read this.

I loathe polls but …

Since the change of name from last year I think of the Atlas Citizen Science Division as being the ‘Guardian/Governing body’ for any group that may wish to join its ranks. The ECSD mnemonic being the first of many that may pop up as No Man’s Sky grows.

A collective decision needs to be made on the name of our ‘troop’ to keep our identity and presence across the No Man’s Sky universe consistent. As has been pointed out an efficient naming convention for planet discoveries ends with the suffix ECSD. The ‘E’ will always represent the early radio days of ETARC. Etarc is just not spelled out in full but remains for historical reasons.

Graphically the Logo text can be displayed in all sorts of ways for emphasis. Though the capitals hint at being the primary wording. The poll is simply a decision on which words to include.

Um please just vote for one. (I’m not entirely sure how to restrict voting to one so wish us luck!)

  • Atlas Citizen Science Division ETARC
  • Citizen Science Division ETARC
  • Atlas Citizen Science Division ETARC CSD
  • Citizen Science Division ETARC CSD
  • Atlas Citizen Science Division ECSD
  • Citizen Science Division ECSD
  • Atlas Citizen Science Division ACSD
  • Citizen Science Division ACSD
  • Edison Township Amateur Radio Club ETARC
  • Edison Township Amateur Radio Club CSD
  • Edison Township Amateur Radio Club ECSD
  • Atlas ECSD

Thanks,
I think we are all alright. Just love are ETARC. We are Space-Ents, you know, mustin’ be hasty. This is not easy being a “true democracy” without a “formal governing body”. Its not really, majority rules is it. Sometimes you make a poll and you get two votes. How do you decide on two votes. And then was that poll something that the majority wanted to vote on. Anywho…

I say artists, if it inspires you to do the logo any which way, lets see it. :sunglasses:

Update: I was referring to a hypothetical Poll, not the one above. you did fine @johnnycloud

We’ve done polls, we’ve done polls to see what gets entered into another poll, so a collective naming convention was agreed upon months ago.

When the undoubted influx of new Xbox members join up, they too will question the ETARC suffix, and we will again give them the history lesson on the origins.

There’s certainly no need to rock the boat that already sailing quite nicely, and as I took on the responsibility of ensuring the votes were fair and included everyone’s suggestions, it wasn’t a simple process. An enjoyable one though.

As for the logo, feel free to submit any ideas or suggestions, there are no, “it must contain” criteria.

Nice poll, @johnnycloud – v comprehensive!

I’d like to think that - as you said, we need not spell it out in full - the shortest, most inclusive / complete option seems to make the most sense.
(Anything which might “double up” or include “redundancy” may not be needed – such as having the “CSD” acronym alongside any explicit “Citizen Science Division”.)

With us here (ETARC / Atlas CSD) being “just one” of a few (and, in future, possibly several more) "CSD"s, I think it’d still be important to ensure those letters “CSD” appear somewhere in the logo – such as the suggested “ECSD” to reflect ETARC.

Finally, to help make things less confusing / more accessible for newcomers (who’d fairly have no clue about ETARC, unless they’ve read up on the background), including the name “Atlas” makes LOTS of sense, least of all cuz it’s DIRECTLY related to No Man’s Sky, as well as the fact – as @Mad-Hatter fairly pointed out – that this forum’s website logos rather emphasise “atlas” and the big yellow/pink “A” logo; it’d be silly, really, to ignore / not reflect this, somewhere. :sunglasses:

I like the first one, however, it just looks better with ETARC in front, and that wasn’t an option. I vote for ETARC Citizen Science Division.

I like the design direction you’re going with, not sure about the colours though, that pink is a little guady I think.

I bought some adhesive acrylic laser paper sheets and need to take all of these images to Kinko’s to get Stickers printed…they are all that worthy! -) I had to do the same with the previous CSD images since my local embroidery / t-shirt shops wouldn’t print them out! -*(

This poll really confuses me … Which one do I pick if I want to choose ETARC Citizen Science Division (ECSD) ? Not that I consider myself a member though, as I have yet to decide once NEXT hits.

I’m in the same boat as you…I have no idea what my position on the hubs and multiplayer will be going forward because I have no idea how it will work…if it is a nice and chill optional coop only PvE I might have a future with one of the hubs.

My opinion on the name of the hub is Atlas ECSD sounds perfect to me…short and sweet, clear what it’s about, and has a reference to ETARC but not enough there to confuse people. If I end up sticking with a hub I hope it’ll be this one, I don’t necessarily want it to be huge but I do hope it ends up having enough players to where it won’t be hard to find a team.

Though it all remains to be seen how this unfolds.

@DarthTrethon I guess for everyone involved there will be a preferred name and abbreviation for the hub, hence the vote no?
