Yeah but we all know 250,000 players didnt join the ARG lol.
And unfortunately SM doesnt have the best track record : (
40,000 seem much more likely, and say have of them wanted a physical AP.
This sounds the most likely scenario to me.
We know there weren’t 250,000 active. I doubt that there were more than 3 or 4 thousand actively posting on the boards. As for how many were lurking, and how many signed up to CSD purely on the chance of a freebie, and didn’t participate at all - we’ll never know.
I have no independent figures. All I can use are the numbers I’ve been given by the organisers. And however accurate or otherwise Sean Murray’s estimate may be, I have to give more credence to his figures than I do to a number someone has arbitrarily plucked out of thin air by way of wishful thinking.
As I’ve said before, the actual numbers don’t matter all that much. What’s important is that we recognise that a lot of hopeful people aren’t going to get a pass - and that we don’t get too hurt about it if it’s us.

Me too 1800 Normal Mode and over 330 hours on my fathers log in lol! I’ll be sadly disappointed not to receive a pass. 
I’m crossing my fingers. Now I have tempted fate it looks like I won’t boo hoo!
But hey ho life shall continue with or without.
But to think I was shouting at a digital mouse on a twitch screen to go left and right for hours… If the authorities find me I shall be locked up lol

Interesting theory, I too had NMS as my most played game for 2017 and received a pass.
As i was watching the @kyle-culver Waking Titan recap videos, I realized and now think that everyone that didn’t fill the 1st survey that followed the 4 error Atlas messages that took part in 3 phases that finally led to that very special first survey that contained several questions remember guys?, (where it was asked if you wanted a physical copy of the Atlas Pass V4 before phase 2 started) I got into Waking Titan JUST after the first survey was sent!

It is pure speculation of course, but still. I think I just arrived after this phase and I remember you guys were talking about it and this survey for me was the most important one, because I think that there were not many people at this early stage, maybe that’s why they already ask at this moment for the Atlas Pass…
I got the results of that survey I missed though. (awaken dream etc)
After joining, I pretty did everything I could do to be participative, and took me a lot of personal investment/time.

What is G-17?
They are designations. They told us that further on those designations will have a very particular role… Everyone got one from the mails we received in phase 2 and 3
