if I recall correctly in that book the living ships were made out of dragon’s eggs. Effectively killing the dragon inside.

Yes, there was that unpleasantness but it was done out of ignorance not cruelty…and the ships were pretty cool…
Some of that stuff was sort of offset in a later trilogy where the last remaining fledgling dragons were nurtured and escorted to their ancient home.
The ‘timbers’ retained the ability to hold memories of the past which does hold an intriguingly parallel to some of the NMS stuff.
I realised there was another interesting parallel to the LiveShip Traders books:
Part of the quickening of the Liveship involved the requirement of the deaths of 3 family members while on board so their soul/memories could merge with the ship.
This was strikingly similar to the requirement of the 3 Travellers souls as part of the Living Ship missions.
Just an observation.
