I think this is what is called “servers stress test” where they get as many people as possible traveling to a certain location. To see how the servers handle the transitions across the servers as the players move and how to program better prediction-routines to handle the load.
It is all just wrapped up in an event…which is how Devs used to devise testings. These days of Millions-Of-Free-Testers, they test systems just by letting everyone play and do whatever. I loved while testing LOTRO for Codemasters…when towns were invaded by 100s of pigs or Giant Devs (their avatars 30x the size of a normal avatar) roaming the lands taking on all vanquishers! -)
