Old Travellers, New Tricks

TM yourself deep into the ground and then fill the hole behind you and wait for the all clear

Yep.this.

Or just run away a shorter distance.
They only spawn in next to you if you leap a mile away.
Just scoot up a neaby slope & still close enough to see the battleground & then just keep that sort of distance… keeping in mind the next wave may come from any direction usually requiring a quick sideways jump or two.

Oh, I understand the methods. I just dislike the conflict or hiding or running away.

That whole aspect ruins my exploring xenophotographer experiences.

I found out what it was that I saw in a stream, it was an Emergency Warp Unit. I thought it was a token like the “chit”, but it’s a technology.

I usually wait for the next wave to spawn in fist, then skidaddle over a hill or try break line of sight, once I get the countdown timer I look for a cave or try arc back around to be closer to my ship.

As for dealing with them as they chase you in to space, I was having trouble with this too, I couldn’t just accelerate away and wait for pulse drive to reactivate like I used to.

I forgot they added powerflow functionality to our ships.

If you focus power to engines you can escape your attackers not long after accelerating away. I think it’s a lightning bolt symbol or something that indicates acceleration (maybe two arrows pointing right)

If I don’t want to bother with fighting the sentinels, there are a couple of tips that I use.

  • if the ground sentinels were triggered because I annoyed them by mining something, eliminating predators, or destroying a dissonant resonator, I don’t fire back and the wanted level will only last 10 seconds. The cloaking device will last longer than that so I can just turn it on and calmly walk away (don’t mine anything else or use the jet pack or they will see you and the timer will restart). The timer will be more like 30 seconds if I shoot back, the device is still handy there.
  • If I have a wanted level on ground, I don’t get into the ship until it is gone or there will be a fight while in flight.
  • If I get into a fight in space because I mistakenly nicked a space station, freighter or another NPC, I’ll call in the nexus before the first wave. (I may need to pulse away for a few seconds). Then I can duck into it to end the battle. I might battle the sentinels for a while, but I need to call in the shelter before the first wave, it gets tricky after that.
  • I’ve never used the emergency escape tech (I think it gets turned on by some upgrade to the ship tech but I don’t remember). I rarely get into space fights where that wasn’t my plan to start with.

A couple of game exploiting hacks

  • If I get stuck in space with nowhere to shelter and I really can’t be bothered, I consider restoring the game from the last automatic save. The auto save is happening so often now that am likely still be in space, and it doesn’t take any longer than warping to a new system when escape is possible. If I was on a nexus mission it will also reset so I don’t always want to use this.
  • I haven’t tried but I imagine that I could just switch to one of the creative modes for a short time to get immunity.

Oh right. I see the engine/weapon priority display pop up, and when it was new, there was also more info about it - but I can’t remember the keyboard shortcut. :person_facepalming:

Slash key on PC, and (according to some online discussions) “up” on the D-pad for console, and left on the Left Stick in PSVR2.

Ive never used the 'prioritise shields/weapons thing.
I keep forgetting its a thing.

Tired of accessing your bait box by bringing up your multi tool screen while fishing?

It has a spot in the quick menu, it’s just almost as inconvenient as the multitool screen to get to. If you go left to utilities, and left again you’ll see the Fishing Hook.

It’s not perfect but it might be handier for some. Sometimes my muscle memory navigates me to my exosuit when I bring up the menu and see the multitool screen, and I have to nav back. So the quickbar might be handier for me.

Anyone else fail to notice it had a quickbar shortcut too?

This will be handy on PC, for assigning shortcuts to 0-9. Not so much on consoles.

Circle/B button/ R key reload our multitools. They reel in our fishing rods. Make this the bait box button please <3

The skiff allows for certain items to be ‘built’ on it like the Nutrient Processor & Base Computers.
Not graphically pretty but it stabilises the skiff a bit by preventing some of the higher bobbing.
Also allows for a ‘camp’, enabling a quick return to your ‘base’ via teleporter.

Also fishing from standing on your ship stops it bobbing, making stormy weather less bouncy.

An alternative to placing things on your skiff is building a platform with the terrain manipulator.

I find this handy when in deep seas, I build up a pillar then use the restore function so there’s just a blob at sea level, I place nutrient processor here and then use it to store fishes.

I still launch trade rocket from the skiff because it’s fun.

Reddit tip:

“you can also bounce splash the bob to lure fish faster by lightly tapping the reel-in button.”

I’ve been wondering is it faster or is it like the button you press to make the lights at a crossing change that apparently do nothing but make you feel in control :joy:

Depends on which town / city you’re in. In most towns, the crossing counts traffic density and the time since it last allowed people to cross. It counts the traffic either by pneumatic mats or magnetic loops in the road. When it judges sufficient traffic has been allowed to pass, and sufficient time has elapsed since the last crossing, it will allow the crossing signal to operate. So there’s often an unexplained delay between pressing the button, and the crossing operating.

If no-one presses the button, the crossing will never operate.

Some big cities, however, operate a “green wave” system, where all the crossings and traffic lights are co-ordinated through a central computer. This allows certain routes for emergency vehicles to guarantee green traffic lights all the way to their desination. Obviously, this involvess disrupting the normal timings of crossings and junctions.

However, the crossing still won’t operate unless you press the button.

Amazing! Now what can you tell me about the myths I’ve heard about elevator door buttons? :face_with_monocle:

Over the years, I’ve investigated several cases where lift engineers got crushed whilst working on top of a live lift car. I used to be reasonably familiar with how the control systems worked - but my knowledge is probably a bit out of date now, and limitad to electrical relay / analogue systems.

Probably the most important thing to know is that not all lifts work the same way. Small single lifts in small buildings are relatively straightforward. Multiple lift installations in large / tall buildings can be wildly complicated.

For those who would like a safe fishing spot without having to put down a base computer and build one, I just figured something out when the thought occurred to me and I can report it does indeed work!

I actually compltely forgot about the Marine Shelter. I only ever used it once during the quest to get the Submarine when fist introduced.

It just needs something solid to connect to and be submerged in water in order to place it.

During a storm you can place it in places the water may not usually reach, and you can fish from it by aiming to the surface once it’s in range.

If you don’t have a handy Freighter nearby, use a terrain manipulator to bring the ground up to you and then attach it to it, then delete the terrain.

edit:

Just to note, the depth displayed while fishing will be the depth of your character underwater so I do not know if this effects the catch. I know my rod is in spot that is 50 u deep but the Marine Shelter is 8 u deep and its the only reading the game will give me.

If this does effect catch, then this method may only be useful for shallow water catches. I’ll see what happens also when I successfuly place one above water during a wavey storm

They’re basically on-demand public transport. Sometimes I feel they should just introduce elevator schedules in large, tall buildings, and everybody would be happier…

There were 3 elevators in the hotel I stayed in on my recent trip. Every time I pressed the button to call one, the one to respond was the one that did not want to let me out. The door was very slow to open. If elevators came on a schedule, I would be forced to take the one that squeaks or is jerky as it goes down or some other unnerving near malfunction. I like having options.

Has Stephen King written a book about a haunted elevator that wants to eat people yet? I’m sure in time he will.
