Hi all, I have asked this once before about if this update means you have to be online at all times, well as it is I believe it will be, I found this at Polygon Beyond goes live on Aug 14 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One, transforming what was originally a single-player game into a world of multiplayer possibilities. So with that statement you will not be able to play offline, so be it. It now looks like they went down the same path as Bethesda did with Fallout 76, what a shame. If this all becomes true Hello Games don’t really care about all the people who like playing this game Single player in offline mode.

That doesn’t say you can’t play offline

NoBody is being forced to play online at all. There is single player now and the will continue to be single player. No stress.

I’m not saying that I am being forced to play online, I’m saying from what I have been reading there will not be an offline mode, they (HG) want everyone to play together and not on your own in offline mode that’s it. The information is out there it’s not hard to see.

In the meeting at Hello Games, after NEXT launched, where riding animals, milking animals, adding massive multiplayer missions, refining everything in the game including overhauling all of the inputs and assets to suit VR and adding programmable logic to base building, I can imagine a pause of silence after all these things were thrown out then the meeting adjourns as follows:

I remember several statements in the recent interviews with Sean that seemed pretty clear that you can turn multiplayer features off. And the game’s still on GoG, which means it has to be playable without an online connection, or it would violate GoGs terms of service.

There will always be offline mode of playing the game.

You are assuming more than you need too.

On the PC it is a steam game. You play it off line.

Question solved answered.

Sean hasn’t said enough either way to draw any conclusions from.
Two days people! XD

I can understand that you all try to make a joke of it all, but there are people who like playing the game in offline mode like myself, I’m sure there are people out there who are thinking the same, we don’t all like playing with others. I don’t want to pay $80.00 a year to Playstation Plus just to play this game, I’m not stupid, and I can’t afford it. I am really hoping they left that option in but I doubt it.

In the first iteration of multiplayer in NMS we got limited controls. Mostly on or off. It was a bit crude and if off I could not visit with my family or friends, when on you couldn’t really stop the interruptions from happening and someone was always popping by. If I was in the mood for company then I could stop and talk, if not I could go offline for a bit and they would leave (I never kicked anyone, that just seemed to be a bit extreme, but I did need to mute a few when my younger grand kids were playing). HG then added more controls so you could be on with your friends and not be bothered with anyone else. They also added damage settings so the griefers were less effective.

You should consider that most of the people that are disposed to being reporters are the ones that are social by nature. They wouldn’t normally be looking for, nor reporting on the non-social settings of a game, it will have to be a slow news day for them to start considering the alternate view. They also talk primarily of the new features, not old setting options, especially if they haven’t been changed.

I’ll speculate that they retain the off, friends only, on settings to fine tune your multiplayer experience. And if you don’t call the Nexus, and you don’t move to one of the busy hubs, you’ll be unlikely to run into anyone. Since other players can just call the Nexus to find someone, there will little reason for people to pick the option to join a random game. Even if you leave multiplayer on, you’ll likely have fewer random encounters than you do now.

Hello Games is listening to their community I’m sure that they think that have it covered, if not then they will fix it.

I thought that Sean specifically said that BEYOND did not introduce true MMO. That should mean that Sony shouldn’t require the Plus subscription, no?

Single player will likely always be an option.

Ps+ absolutely not required.

I enjoy playing offline, and dislike the idea of being forced to play online. But there is no conclusive evidence that the game will become an online only game. And HG/SM have, in the past, explicitly stated the game won’t require PS Plus.

On a side note, I take offense to the implication that I’m stupid for paying for PS Plus.

Polygon? Weren’t they the guys who beat the no mans scam horse with a stick long after everyone agreed it was well and truly dead?

I mean their statement says everything about what little research they did “transforms a single player game into a multiplayer…”. That came with NEXT and was kickstarted by atlas rises. Beyond is expanding upon the multiplayer aspects.

I see this reaction a lot around here every time there’s a new update with expansion on multiplayer (as well as in every twitter post from Sean) and I understand why people always jump the gun suddenly, that single player element is very important to a lot of people. Probably more important to them than multiplayer is to a Call of Duty fanboy.

Sean always stresses that core chilled exploration experience they’ve had since day one is still very important to them and they always strive to maintain it. This will not change with this update. A lot of the new ways to play will only be accessible to those who want to play together, but all mechanics and features will be accessible in single player. As many reviews have said so far when discussing the multiplayer, it’s all optional.

I reckon nexus will be accessible, but you won’t see anyone. I also reckon you can take part in weekly missions to get quicksilver for event items, you just won’t see anyone on the other side. If that’s not the case then I apologise but I don’t see hello games cutting off their core audience from the nexus content. Single player folk were able to take part in the community events last season, they just had to put up with the ghastly sight of a billion comm balls and boundary break bubbles scurrying to and fro

No one is joking. HG has made it clear they want to leave single players intact. As stated by @zsigmond, Steam does not require online play even for Rocket League.
True we have no definite word, but there is no logical reason for HG to require a constant connection to play. That is something mobile apps demand…

Except for the new randomly generated NPC’s. A feature long asked for by solo players.
What I find amusing about that is ppl want to game alone but also wanted more realistic NPC characters…so they crave companionship, just not from RP. I can understand that…

I’m in a wait-and-see state in regards to BEYOND and single player/offline mode. I have my game save files backed up. I still have a thread of --probably irrational-- fear that Steam will force an update, since, apparently they do not allow users the option to not update.

Your only recourse on PC if you just want to keep playing the game you already have would be to turn off Steam and unplug your internet and then turn steam back on.

Would that approach work for console users?

I understand your fears, @SamsonPI. And good luck on the 14th.
