Btw - “sauvage” does not translate as “fantastic” in any French I ever learned. It can mean “wild”, “savage”, “untamed”, etc - but not “fantastic”.

Reminds me of a game that’s been on my radar for a while. I got to play a bit of it when I had a weeks trial of the uber edition of PS+ that lets you play a bunch of games for free, but then NMS brought out The Cursed update and that was that.
Looks like they were acquired by Stadia… and then subsequently retired alongside it a year later.
After releasing its first game, Journey to the Savage Planet , in 2020, Typhoon Studios was shut down alongside SG&E in February 2021. A new studio, Raccoon Logic , was formed in August 2021 by former Typhoon Studios staffers with control over the rights to Journey .
When it mentions Journey, they don’t mean ThatGameCompany’s Journey. That confused me. Rather the series IP is referred to as “journey” so the next game could be “journey to the cheese moon” (every thread is now cheese moon focused, sorry).
They reclaimed the rights from google with a little help from TenCent.

Yes, I understand all that. I know what “fantastic” means. It’s the French word “sauvage” I was struggling with - and how anyone managed to translate it to “fantastic”.

Savage actually fits the story. I have often seen words translated more ‘delicately’ for American audiences because we are seen as more easily offended than others…and more ignorant of broader understanding.

It baffles me, sometimes. J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” was changed to “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” for the American market - which I suppose is a slight simplification. Philip Pullman’s “Northern Lights”, however, was changed to “The Golden Compass” - a change which leaves me completely bemused. I mean, why???

In the Myasaki film Spirited Away, they changed seal because they thought Americans would think it was an animal. I cannot remember what they changed it to because I watch the film in Japanese

Pullman submitted his manuscript to his U.S. publishers, he used the temporary title The Golden Compasses for what would be the entire series. This was a reference to John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost , which describes some golden compasses used “to circumscribe the universe, and all created things.” However, Milton’s compass was the drawing tool used to create circles or arcs rather than the kind used for navigation.
According to Pullman, he made the U.S. publisher aware that the title would be Northern Lights in all other editions, but they weren’t interested in changing it. They had been calling the first book, rather than the entire trilogy, a singular The Golden Compass and were attached to this name. In fact, they offered Pullman enough compensation – both in money and in flattery – that he let them keep the original title.
The “golden compass” of The Golden Compass was never meant to refer to the alethiometer. It was never meant to be singular or to even see the light of day. Despite this – and the widespread presence of the true name of the first book in the series – The Golden Compass lent its name to the first film version of the story, the 2007 flop staring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. HBO’s more recent series casually avoided this problem by using the name of the entire franchise instead. Still, the title The Golden Compass – and the bizarre story surrounding it – will always be associated with His Dark Materials.

Lets not even get started on the International name for “How do you Live?”
I was going for the full experience, the same one Japan got. Know that the book is entwined with the story but it’s not necessarily what the story was about, then bam, lands in the cinema in japan with zero trailers and a single poster.
I went blackout on any info after that, and of course they had to go and call it The Boy and the Heron. That was already telling me TOO MUCH!!! Now I know theres a boy and a heron!
Luckily I avoided everything else, didnt even want to see voice casting.
When I first heard about this film, way back in 2016-2017 he mentioned it was something he was leaving for his grandkids as he felt his time was short. I told my parents, out of all the ghibli movies you’ve never watched with me, this is the one I’d really like to watch in the cinema when it comes out.
My mam passed in Feb 2023. When the film came out here a few months later I booked tickets for me and my dad and I also showed him some ghibli movies and the documentary so he could have a base understanding of the studio and what makes them so special.
I made a point of saying he puts his mother in every movie, and that his last film was probably his most personal, this next one is meant to be a bit more fantastical, will be fun.
The film was released in Ireland on the 26th of December… Most territories had it by Dec 7th so this date just made the film seem like it was getting ready to help me after what would no doubt a dificult Christmas day
Five minutes into The Boy and The Heron, me and my dad just look at each other and have the same “oh fuck this is gonna be a journey” look on our faces.

I came out of that film absolutely ballin’ my eyes out, I don’t think I was able to cry for the last 8-9 months and I must have freaked out some of the cinema goers.
I did have a bit of a laugh as I tried to reign it in outside, when I realised, people leaving, and coming in, , must have been wondering “Did that guy just come out of Poor Things?!”…
Poor Things was having early previews in the cinema that day (small arthouse cinema in a gentrified part of the city). I like to think they all came out after their early previews wondering “what the hell was he crying about?”
I really should get around to watching Poor Things. I loved The Lobster.

Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki are frickin COOL
I watched the English Dub because my dads not great with subtitles. I tend to watch both versions anyway.
Arriety is one of the strangest ones because it has 2 different localizations. An american one and then a UK/Ireland one. Most sites have the former, finding the latter is extremely difficult,but the cast is SO much better. They have Saoirse Ronan for cripes sake, the cast fits the setting so much better.
The Borrowers was one of my favourite movies growing up
Funny enough, a friend of mine works in theatre production and currently there is a production of The Borrowers going on in Dublin. He was describing the stage theyd built and the shortcuts they took. Theres a lot of hidden RC cars and vibrators involved behind the scenes

Thanks for reminding me. I have not yet seen How Do You Live? I read the response of the Japanese audiences who were very good at saying nothing and showing nothing but somehow able to let me know it was very deep and moving and should not be missed…and yet, I am still missing it.
My favorite is KiKi’s Delivery Service. I love the theme song. I love the painter’s cabin in the woods and I 
ve the cat!

GKIDS have been weird about the blu ray release, I check every couple of months and it’s still just slated for an American release (it might be out now actually?) but no mention of an EU region release.
I’ve seen people say most 4k blu rays are region free but I do not wanna roll the dice and pay 60-70 euro on shipping and import tax (I swear the cost of shipping/importing from US has tripled since 2016). I haven’t checked since April so there might have been news on other regions since.
I know in europe all ghibli films are on Netflix but I think in US, HBO have the streaming rights, it might already be up there, I’m sure it’s available to rent on other platforms too.
Save it for a rainy day, prepare a warm beverage and cocoon yourself with blankets.

Just looked. Says it is available on Hulu but I do not see it. Disney has published his other films so I am hopeful for this one too
Apparently Max has it thru Amazon Prime or it can be rented thru Google TV

I’ve been renting some films through Google lately because of the handiness and availability of youtube on most nearly every device and smart tv. Definitely worth a go if you have a google account and don’t want to sign up for max through prime

Looks like we got a Blu Ray release here in september. 70 euro for the steel book is a bit criminal but I was going to pay that in shipping/import anyway so I pounced on it. I’ll just make it an early christmas present to myself

Paid 4.99 to access the full episodes on youtube and it was absolutely worth it. Wonderful show .
The guests don’t know what they’ll look like until they get out of the make-up chair, then have to invent a character to go with the look for an Improv Interview.
