Ho fellow travellers, interlopers, foul spawn and meatbags alike.

If there’s one thing I love about NMS, it’s the lore. It paints a beautiful vague picture of a universe, a rich tapestry to use as a backdrop to your own Sci fi adventure story.

With the arrival of NEXT, I’ve heard there is new Lore and some changes. I thought we could use a nice place to discuss our findings.

What’s changed, what’s new and what’s missing? Have you noticed anything personally or have you heard something through the redditvine?

I’m on a bugged out legacy save so right now I’m not getting the new lore introduced via base archives, and I’m keeping my new save on ice until my progression bug is fixed.

From what I played of the newly revised awakenings quest, there were some slight dialogue changes, but once I hit the anomaly my progression haulted.

Feel free to share any documentation you may have come across, transcript comparisons of pre and post next dialogues etc, that sort of thing. Hoping to find some and share myself soon.

For those new and old to NMS but would love to read the lore and transcripts while away from the game or learn some history on a commute or a slow lunch, devilinpixy has done a great job or archiving it here



Here is the lore from the base archives

  • #1:
    We sought an escape from reality. That’s why we’re all here, isn’t it?

  • I can remember what it was like, to be a Traveller. To have that hope, that intolerable thirst for the new…

  • I should never have listened to you, my love. There is no fire in this place, no trophies fit for gods. There is only darkness. The family of glass, they watch everything…

  • #2:
    Did it know what I had done to it? Was it angry? Upset? Alone? Afraid? Could a Sentinel feel such things?

  • It hovered before me, its light catching upon a thousand crystal shards all around. And as I moved on, it travelled by my side.

  • That night I dreamt of the warp cage, but there was no more pain within. The drone looked at me, and I knew that I had been forgiven. I had fixed it. I had answered for my sin.

  • I shall call it Laylaps.

  • #3:
    We see the Sentinels swarm across the void, warping in and out of this dimension at the will of some unknown force, depositing the echoes of the dead within the archives.

  • Laylaps does not join the others. It just stares at me, its light still shining unaltered, unabated. It is a comfort to me.

  • #4:
    I found them standing over me as I awoke, their beak chattering, their eyes caught between horror and joy.

  • It was the tallest Gek I had ever seen, but the mystery was soon solved. They asked me of the Empire – they wanted to know if the First Spawn still spoke their name. In life they had possessed a hundred Korvax slaves, you see.

  • They do not remember how they arrived in this place. Their face swarms with nanites. They are lonely.

  • #5:
    The three of us journeyed to the centre: the Sentinel, the First Spawn, and the Traveller, all children of the ATLAS, all hoping for some answer in the void.

  • The First Spawn would not stop talking, would not stop glorifying their cruel life of brutality and pain. One night they sang a song, a tale of a lost people, of an armada of freighters fleeing the abyss.

  • Of a world where every Sentinel turned against every living thing, annihilating them all within moments. Laylaps showed no sign of understanding. It did not leave us, nor did it try and explain.

  • Perhaps the Sentinels were right.

  • #6:
    The First Spawn fought valiantly, but there was no saving them. The nanites had found their place within, protruding outward through every pore, through every limb and every thought.

  • And it was done. They departed with the family of glass, forever lost to this world, their story at an end.

  • I ventured on. We were almost there.

  • #7:
    Something was very wrong. The ATLAS interface had grown still, its orb cold and almost grey. The computers did not respond. Nothing did.

  • It took a few moments before I realised that Laylaps was gone.

  • I was alone.

  • #8:
    I heard the music again this morning – that same signal that led me to this realm. I stood and listened, honing my instruments to find the source, expecting some different result, but what use was science here?

  • If a computer is on fire, what good are the prayers of data?

  • #9:
    They had captured my friend. I saw them from a distance, the family of glass in all their majesty, cradling the fallen Sentinel, its light flickering in their awful embrace.

  • I let out an involuntary cry as they cut into its exoskeleton, and each vacant stare, each grin of malice turned to me.

  • I fled, but it was no use. They numbered in the hundreds. They found me.

  • #10:
    It was Laylaps - Laylaps who I had doubted, Laylaps who I had harmed and fixed, Laylaps who was my salvation! It tore us both from that awful place, warping us back to the universe, to our universe!

  • The first Traveller in history to escape the World of Glass, to be reclaimed from death itself! It is kindness that saves us all, don’t you think? Laylaps told me everything, speaking through my very exosuit!

  • I will see you soon, my friend. Together at last! What tales they will tell of us! I am transmitting the glyphs now. I can’t wait for you to meet my new friends…


Out of hearts for a few hours but thank you for posting this, very interesting stuff. An account of the world of glass, from a traveller who escaped it with the help of a sentinel… I wonder what Laylaps told the traveller at the end. Is meeting the travellers new family/friends a nod to just us playing multiplayer or a hint at future lore?

As for Laylaps, here’s some notes on the mythological dog it takes its name from.

You may be more familiar with seeing Laylaps/Laelaps in the sky as Canis Major.

Sorry to drag up old posts, I’m currently doing base archives now that it’s finally working. Ive reached 100% and now I’ve to go find a signal.

However none of the lore I received so far was what you posted above, I haven’t even gotten to that stuff yet but the new lore I’ve received so far sounds lovely, it almost sounds like a players journey log post atlas but pre next. Which makes sense, when you relearn an old blueprint via the archive system it says you’ve recovered or restored the blueprint, as if it was yours to begin with. The archive logs are a past iteration of yourself?

My favourite part was mention of seeing another traveller at a trade station but swearing it either was a gek on last visit or was a gek on a later visit.

I haven’t contributed much, I haven’t done any of the quests besides the required to get base building going. As I progress I’ll add or share any differences/new lore I find

Do you by chance have a place online you pulled the above lore from? I’d like to find and share more :slight_smile:

Ideally I’d love to find copies of transcripts (pulled from the PC version) before next and after next, then put em through a program that compares and highlights changes and additions, then share those findings here :slight_smile:

I already have a copy of the lore, story and NPC transcripts from Atlas Rises, just havung trouble finding them pulled from post Next.

That’s the plan. Somehow gotta do all that without a PC :slight_smile:


Is there a reason or purpose for the seemingly never ending 24 hour count-downs that now give me literally useless modules I’d normally use in the blueprint analyzer? The game is a day late and a dollar short to that party…I finished unlocking what the blueprint analyzer had to offer in a few hours…with the many 1.5 and 6 hour countdowns that preceded this there’s no chance I wasn’t going to be finished with it.

I think that’s just a part of the infinite rewards model introduced in Next.

Base specialists no longer give you the same end message and instead ask for never ending (as far as I can tell) request missions. I think it’s a way to deliver stuff to do when the player has essentially done everything. (like radiant sidequests introduced in Skyrim)

I’m assuming they’ve done this with base archive too with the way you describe it, I’m still on the early wait an hour n half stages of the base archive.

Also if the base specialist and archive missions have no tail end it could be a way to future proof legacy saves with new updates, make them less problematic, since the quest line never reaches an end point it will always have a “check” function. Just a small theory.

While searchhing for new lore transcripts I did stumble across this nice short podcast about no mans sky and creating your own lore within its universe.

Yeah the base archive story ends and then there is one final 6 hour countdown at the end of which there’s no more lore or blueprints just three bits of the junk tech bits for the blueprint analyzer and then a 24 hour countdown appeared and then than ended and I got another three useless bits of junk for the analyzer I long since finished with and now it’d defragmenting for another 24 hours but I doubt it’ll do anything. This is just so completely empty and utterly worthless that if I had nothing left to do I wouldn’t log in for this. Not sure how they think this would keep people engaged to be honest.

It might be useful for legacy saves if the specialist terminals even work for their pointless bits…last I checked they didn’t but haven’t checked since 1.5.

I don’t care to even try to “create lore” around a totally empty and pointless repeating countdown with basically dirt for reward. The lore that was there was really good but the empty countdown is not.

The create lore thing was unrelated to my reply, it was something I came to share in here but wanted to reply to you as well without double posting. I wasn’t suggesting you create lore around an empty structure :wink: I can see how it came across like that :see_no_evil:

I just meant the infinite quest loops in general was to give people who return with their own set goals in mind can have something else ticking over in the background as they live out their own space fantasy. I didn’t mean the 24 HR wait for base archive specifically, just the overall mechanic as being another little peice of a greater whole of stuff to do in the game. The game is still geared mostly towards a passive and/or older crowd and a lot of the progression etc seem to signify that.


I have no idea where that lore comes from that singulargleam posted above. I haven’t seen any of it yet.

I do seem to get some bits at knowledge stones at monoliths every now and then, though I haven’t gotten any lately. Might be similar to the abandoned buildings lore, that does not progress if you haven’t warped a certain distance. And since I’m busy exploring my local surroundings, that usually doesn’t happen…

In any case, the one bit that jumped me right in the face and I’m kind of surprised nobody has mentioned here, is that Nada now refers to the player as Dreamer at times.


Once you go through the base archive missions and receive the landing pad blueprint - you can do a time-gated quest for the archives. It will lead you to abandoned buildings with that lore in the terminals.


Okay so, maybe I’m biased and readin in to this too much but… Did polo just confirm my Head-Canon for a universe reset?

I have always seen it as the simulation fast forwarding a few millenia of galactic evolution, hence the planets completely changing when there’s an update effecting biomes, resources etc.

That’s what I tell to the people that freak out when it happens anyway, to help them immerse themselves in the cataclysm of losing their perfect planet.

It seems Polo may be nodding to this. Anyone else got any good theories or ideas from his little spiehl?
