Help a fellow Traveller

An update to my broken portals bug for those interested:
In my case, it seems I can activate new portals but run the risk of it jamming on its last destination before it locks to the charge screen. The most recent portal stays open & running but cannot have a new destination dialed in. Sometimes, I can dial a new address but it’s not guaranteed. Already broken portals remain broken when revisited.

TinFoilTime
Is this bug something of a hint towards future updates where some portals jam, remaining open but to an unknown destination for those who come after? Some portals can be re-used but others lock up?
This would encourage moving about but would glitch residents handy access.
I wonder what the portals in-game future is destined to be? Will we be given portal addresses that we must access, to complete tasks?
Are we going to be instrumental in using portals to reactivate the failed-boundary Ring Structures?
Surely there will be more to portals than just visiting for base sharing.
I know I spent a bit of time randomly portal hopping and landing in far flung places, (leaving the odd comm along the way & sometimes finding comms from others doing the same thing) Hopefully the portals are going to become more integral to the game mission and thus any associated bugs ironed out.

I don’t mind some risk involved with the portals, but bugs as a hint for what’s to come? I guess we can write every bug off as some sort of lore involved failure  Curious about the Ring structures as well and expect there will be more to it.

I dont mean the bugs are intentional, simply that there is a point of alteration in the coding there that breaks sometimes as it simpler coding to be further developed at a later date.

I know you didn’t mean those bugs to be intentional and I agree it needs more work, hopefully they do have more planned, just not fleshed it out fully yet.

UPDATE. Portal Bug.
Well, its another base & another portal.
Sure enough after successfully opening the portal on this planet & making the rounds recently (visiting some other CSDs), today when I returned to use the portal it has bugged out.

Hmmm. Since I had this issue on PC, maybe I should jump through mine a few times and see if it also repeats. No time for it right now as my mom is having her other knee replaced tomorrow. I will try to make some jumps tonight.

Nasty Critters Near Ship Tip:

I’ve found (like everyone else) that hiding on top of a tree, a mushroom or your ship is no defence against headbutting nasties.
However, I’ve also found that if you are tricky & own a tall dorsel wing orb exotic, that you can jetpack up onto the very top of the dorsel wing and are out of reach of nasty creatures and also that aggressive sentinels often don’t notice you up there. It’s a handy place to scan & harvest from and by simply looking down at the wing tip, you can get straight back into your ship.

In her room complaining about her leg feeling heavy, HA! I keep telling her the only other option is PAIN! You can’t reason with a doped up mother, lol.

Harvesting tips.
Been watching a few NMS vids lately & noticed that some PS4 players still click individually to harvest. This might be preference or simply not realising there was a easier way of interacting with plants so I thought I’d share this info anyway.

I’ve found that to harvest plants (natural, dome or planter) simply holding □ as you pass the target dot over the plant will harvest it. This allows you to harvest the plant even while moving so long as the white target dot went over the plant briefly while you were holding □. With multiple plants just keep holding the □ button while targeting each plant: as soon as you’ve passed over it, you can move to the next one.
This also works on knowledge stones. You can run past them & interact while still moving. In fact this even works while scanning.
When harvesting from planters, try to line up at an angle so at no time does the dot go on the planter units or the annoying power option will keep popping up.
When harvesting in a dome I use my left thumb to drive the R3 joystick so I can spin slowly while I continually hold down □. This makes for very quick harvest times.

Also, it seems not everyone realises the menu system now allows multiple crafting of an item simply by pressing R1 on the chosen item. Provided you have the materials, you can make a heap of each item in one go.
Choose the item you wish to craft, tap R1 to get the number you want to make, then craft as usual.

I hope this helps anyone who didn’t realise these little things.

Freighter Inventory Tip
If you have goodies stored in your freighter; be it in the freighter slots or in storage vaults on your freighter, then at some time you will return to your freighter to get them. This tip is about quick access.

As soon as your starship gets locked into the landing bay tractor beam you can immeadiately access your freighter inventories, even though you haven’t landed yet.
As you are coming in on automatic landing cycle, you can already be rummaging through & acquiring your required goodies via the inventory transfer menu. It’s possible by the time you land & are ejected that you have what you need & can simply take off again.
Handy when you just want a relic to open a portal or something quick like that.

Both of these tips are awesome! I don’t even have a farm, or a freighter, but when I get them, it will be awesome to know this stuff!

It works on PC too. When i harvest in a dome i stay in the middle, i aim the 1st plant and keep left mouse button pressed. I just move the mouse and take all in 20sec.
If outside field, building a sort of platform for being able to see the field in a vertical plan. so easy to pick up fast without walking

Just before the last update, I experienced some odd behaviour in NMS such as minor bugs & odd planetary detail alterations.
Once again we’re getting some odd things: In particular are chargeable devices like portals & planters now popping up with repair requirements that can’t be accessed.
Some things like the dead portal interface, I’ve had before but the planter interface with an icon I don’t recognise is new.
Has anybody else had this?

Well, I tried the planters at my base and my freighter on PC and I just have the normal nutrient dispenser. Tried my creative PS4 game and it is the same. I will say that I do recall getting odd things like that before but, I did not write it down and it must not have remained which is why I don’t remember exactly what it was. I will keep this in mind for future reference. Not much help, I know.
What would we use a boiler unit for? Very interesting…

Could some friendly interlopers please help me with Portals/Galactic Map?

I open a Portal to a random System (PC–Euclid) using my 5 glyphs (and screen-shot the Glyph pattern).

On the other side, I name the new system, hold down LMB to mark it on the Galactic map, and go back through the portal.

I jump in my ship head for space, open the Galactic map and try to find the newly marked system.

Head explodes, spilling particle effects all over my ship! 0.o

(I have the thingy selected for path (?) to marked system (blue line?). But it is a UI I can’t seem to wrap my head around. The line seems to fade out quickly or stop at a system I have not marked. Is there a tutorial or method/algorithm for tracing these marked systems? )

TIA for any advice.

Maybe you cannot warp far enough from where you are to that marked system?
Somewhere at the top it should be mentioned how many lightyears you have to travel. If that is too much for one warp you will have to do it in more…

Hope this helps…

I think the “Boiler Unit” icon is actually a trade commodity by a different name; Organic Wiring or something like that. I haven’t experienced that with planters, but I wonder why that graphic in particular is showing up.

Ah, I see, thank you. :sunflower:

Unfortunately the issue you have can affect all charge/repair interaction and is not limited to portals alone. The requirements shown for charge/repair are more or less random, slot(s) can show nothing or some unexpected item. In this case it references ‘MAINTAIN_TECH’ items. Unfortunately nothing much to do about the issue but hope HG will fix it with the upcoming update. You are certainly not alone with this issue and it has been reported in detail.
