If you like video game history and seeing it preserved, you might like the Noclip Historical Archive. They’ve been transferring hundreds of old VHS tapes of old video game trailers and event footage to digital format and uploading it to Youtube:
I’m finding Palia very addictive. Signed up July 26. Joined the Discord on August 4 and immediately got an invite to the Closed Beta. Haven’t stopped (except for sleep) since then.
Apparently, Palia is coming out on every platform. Nintendo Switch is now running an trailer for it but, the trailer really does not reveal what the game is about…it is an odd reveal…
Pretty addictive. I got an invite to the closed beta on PC a few days ago. Except for my visual problems I am enjoying it. So relaxing!
The characters look like something I’d like (Steampunks and elk shamans and robots). Can you tell us more (or is that under NDA)? How does it e.g. compare to Minecraft (fewer monsters and no redstone?).
I understand that exploration and building homes and fishing and collecting butterflies can be relaxing. It seems to be a cooperative/no-fighting game where working together on something gives you buffs? The preprogrammed NPCs with certain characteristics that you chat with (“make friends”), are they quest givers or story tellers or skills trainers or…? Does better food = more xp = faster skill learning? Which skills?
Here’s one thing from the web page I didn’t get: In this peaceful setting, why would I want to murder a rare enchanted tree?
If a tree “heals” itself while you’re trying to chop it down - don’t freak out! You’ve found a rare, enchanted tree! Grab some friends to take it on together.
I would have expected to gain bonuses (faster tree regrowth nearby or so) by protecting it.
NDA was over when it came out of Alpha. Went into Closed Beta on August 2 and should exit to Open Beta on August 10. Closed Beta requires an invite, Open Beta does not. You have one area that is yours to build in. Ground is already level. Blueprints cost and resources you can find, for the most part. I haven’t seen any carnivores. Animals generally run away. No redstone.
Some tasks look like a single individual might not be able to accomplish them. Working on the same thing with a friend, like taking a pickaxe to a rock, means that no one individual has to do all the work but when it’s done each individual receives the complete benefit. The NPCs provide information, access to tools and supplies, and other things. To me, better food means carrying less food items.
Outside of your personal area: rocks, trees (even enchanted ones), animals, etc. that you harvest will respawn.
Yes.
I only have a few hours in Palia so far but I think most of my skills are at level two --woodcutting, mining, gathering, crafting. When you eat something you get an overall boost to earning XP for whatever skill you are using. That is whatever skill you use for however long is getting extra XP. If you switch skills, the new skill will get the bonus.
I saw a video where the fishing is sped up if other players near you cheer you on by emote-applauding. lol
All resources, including the rare enchanted trees you need help chopping down, grow back fairly quickly anywhere outside of your lovely large building plot.
If you harvest a resource alone only you get the loot; if you harvest with another player (or more) everyone who harvested gets the loot. Only one player can harvest plants/flowers. but they are super abundant and regrow very quickly.
I now have over 200 gold to buy recipes and seeds with from selling cooked mushrooms and raw fish. There is a bin you put items into on your plot and later you receive gold for them. This can happen twice a Palia day, I believe.
Since I have no desire to gain experience quickly while I get used to the game, I’m selling the food I cook for gold to start me off.
I would be interested in your opinion of Palia once the Open Beta begins, as I have never played minecraft.
best patch notes ever
I tried to play Palia. It looks like my 2014 PC is not up to the task. I had to do a system restore to get my GeForce GPU to work again after Palia crashed. I am going to check all their fix docs. I am hoping to get to play it. What little I was able to see looks awesome.
Apparently there were recently some ribald patch notes for Baldur’s Gate III.
Something about penises will no longer clip through the clothing, and underwear will no longer disappear… My inner four-year-old loved that!
Here is a warning for those about to play Palia: Do not pick up any item you see in a shop or building, even if it pops out a “pick up” flag.
Yesterday I was in a shop looking for the npc who sells bag upgrades. and noticed a flag pop out and automatically clicked it, only to find myself stuck with an ugly decorative ornament that was marked un-sellable, but at the same time I saw that I was now 300 gold poorer. I had saved up over 500 gold with which to buy the bag slot. And now I am not able to purchase one until I gather more things to sell.
So be careful what you click on inside buildings. You’ve picked it up, you’ve bought it.
I like that in Palia that containers can be picked up and stored or moved - whether it’s a storage container or a house full of furniture. Also found out that all Palia player are my ‘friends’. For example when mining and I’m breaking a rock that has Palium in it, I strike it once and then look around to see if any other player is headed in my direction since shared effort is rewarded by every participant receiving the full reward.
Yes! I do the same, though I still feel a bit odd approaching a node that someone else has started. I suppose I will get used to it.
Also the ugly decoration I picked up/accidentally purchased, turned out to be a lovely desk lamp after all, so I don’t feel quite so peeved --especially since I have quickly earned my gold back and more, purchased my pack upgrade, and in four hours will have a new house (I think) .
Sooo how do I find you folks in Palia? My user name is the same as here (possibly with a space between first and last name). I’m not sure how long I will stay, it’s not 100% my favourite genre, but it’s well made. For example the progression seems well thought out, it’s clear to players what they can do next. And when you go explore an absurd location, at least there’ll be a reward chest there with some wallpaper.
On the other hand, none of the skills or minigames really grabs me. And if we have to marry, I swear I’ll try to marry a robot out of protest.
PS: when it says “you have already given a gift today” do they mean real-life today and not in game?
I was very disappointed to learn I chose Penis Type C and received zero clipping issues with my Gith Bard before the patch, a bit of light physics defying flashing would have matched half of the bard class dialogue options perfectly.
Also shocked to learn Gith are the least chosen race. You can be a human or Elf in 95% of all other games, live a little XD

I always choose orc or half-orc if they’re a choice in a game
Orcs were my childhood, I swore off WOW because it took the focus away from orcs v humans (and my pc couldnt run it or warcraft 3 ). My go to tabletop pals are also Orcs
Though 40k is a rich mans game and I am perpetually not a very rich man XD So had to say goodbye to that. Life is putting paywalls and tech hurdles on my Orc vibes, wtf?! XD
The latest hotfix to fix disappearing underwear, has caused my early access camp clothes to disappear from inventory, and I discovered this by getting pulled into a very important story cutscene moment back at camp, so I may not have had the crotch clipping bug, but I got the full monty bug.
Happy with the timing of my screengrab and the Ilithid moving its arm to make this safe-ish for work
The first major patch since Beta began:
My favorite part of the patch is that I can now catch bugs (insects) more easily! For a blind person they always moved way too fast. But they have made the bug-bombs to now have an AOE effect. Very nice.
I wish that Palia had a forum instead of a discord. Too hard to find things.
I didn’t like the removal of the accumulation of chest between the Default Slot and the New Slot - I had just updated 16 Wooden Storage Bins to Copper Storage Bins.
I’m not sure what you mean. You mean bag slots vs storage slots?
That is pretty painful! And now there are fewer copper nodes available… I was annoyed by it too after I made two more storage boxes and was not allowed to place them. Can’t sell the. Only choice is deletion.
I keep telling myself this is early days, just out of Beta and things will hopefully improve.
Yes both Mal and I are with you on that! What really rankles me though I the lack of warning in game before the servers go down for maintenance! Most games give a five to fifteen minute countdown warning on screen.
Still, I am enjoying the heck out of the game so far.
