I’ll likely buy this out of curiosity and as a chill game, but …

I was frustrated by “Lost Winds,” which was created by the Frontier Developments crew that is now working on Last Campfire. For me it had too much "go over there in the expanding discovered path to get/do #1, then go over there to get/do #2, then go back to #1, " … ad nauseum.

I liked look and feel but tired of it quickly and removed it from my iPad.

Yet I willingly do the Living Ship travels. Yeah, I know. But the process to get a Living Ship is not quite the same type of process. I am able to devote only short periods to No Man’s Sky right now (work crunch, even late), but hope to get a ship on an old save (had the needed QuickSilver already  ) by the weekend.

You’re saying that a different developer is working on Last Campfire? I’m confused

The team that did Lost Winds is now working with Hello Games on The Last Campfire. The graphics even show the similarity. That was announced when Sean first mentioned the new project.

I’m not sure if they are Hello Games employees now or just working through Hello Games.

The online teaser info says, “A unique tale from Hello Games and the creative minds behind LostWinds.”

I do not know this for sure but this seems to be part of their Hello Labs project which HG is using to fund other small dev groups and help support them through the process of developing and publishing a game. There are basically 4 people working on this game. And they are called a ‘team’ and SM states he looks forward to what this team will do in the future.
Not sure what it all means…

Hello Labs would be for supporting development of procedural technology though… While I can’t exclude it entirely, last campfire doesn’t seem to fall in that category.

Hello Games announcement from December 2018:

The Last Campfire is an adventure, a story of a lost Ember trapped in a puzzling place, searching for meaning and a way home. Together you will discover a beautiful wilderness filled with lost folks, strange creatures and mysterious ruins.

From Joe Danger to No Man’s Sky and now The Last Campfire, Hello Games has always made games that are vibrant, beautiful, interesting and different.

We brought on board the creatives behind LostWinds, Steven and Chris, and The Last Campfire is their baby. This is a big moment for them, and we’re excited to be able to share in it.

We call it a Hello Games Short. Like Pixar shorts it’s a way to foster creativity and new voices in the studio. We started by making Joe Danger, before No Man’s Sky, and we want to pay forward our success to give others the opportunity to do the same.

I’m so proud that just two of our team has been able to make something so artistically interesting, and so fun and unique to play. It reminds me of why I love working at Hello Games.

That would be both Steven Burgess (Game Design) and Chris Symonds (Art).

Steven has also worked on Joe Danger in a collaboration with Hello Games. He has been an independent developer, since I believe 2011, after having worked with Frontier Developments for years.

It is not uncommon to work for/with various developer studios or publishers (freelance), in this case Hello Games.

Even though I didn’t like some aspects of the Lost Winds game by the same game designer team (now with Hello Games for this project), I plan to buy this anyway. Looks like fun (at least for a awhile).

There is a song played over one of the promo videos. I liked it a lot, so I looked it up.

For those who are interested, it’s by the band “Lamb”. The song is “As Satellites Go By”, from the album Backspace/Unwind.

Question: is it releasing on any other platforms tomorrow or only PS4? I am afraid I may not have power by tomorrow. Laura is already dumping a deluge on us and it is still many miles away…gonna be a long couple of days. Would be nice if the Switch release was tomorrow.

So on the official FB page it states available on multiple platforms (each listed) from 27 Aug,

Nintendo Switch is on the list

Sadly not Steam :frowning:

The Last Campfire - Out August 27th on Apple Arcade, Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Well, I think the X-Box version should play fine on a Windows 10 PC.

I loved the graphics of “Lost Winds” (which the developers now associated with Hello Games made) but was irritated at the need to go back and forth in the maze of paths you discover to accomplish tasks. I was pleased to learn (from Seans’s voice-over) that an Explore mode will be available. That’s a good plan.

I do plan to buy this game. I’m no veteran or master gamer and this one also suits my laid back game preference.

I bought No Man’s Sky for two reasons: (1) I love SciFi and (2) the concept of procedurally generating tons of stuff in the game intrigued me. I looked at paying $60 as partly a reward to Hello Games for pursuing that concept and doing the work needed to field the game with a very small staff.

Their starting the “lab” project to encourage more game development warmed my heart. I’m still in awe of what Hello Games has accomplished as well as their motivation and dedication.
