Expedition 12 - Omega (Spoilers)

When I am online with a friend and he goes to his freighter, I can find him floating like this. Though normally I see him moving around. It is fun to buzz him, he sees me fly through his freighter (and him if I get close enough). Though this character is in a default A pose, I’m not sure it has anything to do with freighters.

Can someone remind me how to get a Pirate Freighter Attack to occur…?
Is it just a random space battle after x number of interstellar jumps or do you need to be in a pirate controlled system as well?

Also, I haven’t done battle with one of these since they first showed up last year.
I remember there was a sequence to it but … I’m old & forgetful.
Something like: Get under shields-Blow up main engines so they can’t leave-Keep stopping missiles…Blow up weaponry…
but I recall that I just blew them up.

How does one capture & thus commandeer a dreadnaught?

I jumped quite a few times to finally encounter one.
Take out the engines then make the 2 trench runs taking out both the initial round shield generators and the core of each when they pop up. I think I took out anything firing at me after that.

So… if I just avoid hammering the hull so as to not destroy the ship, then I should have a good chance at ‘acquiring’ the ship when they surrender, (after all their various components are broken)?

You can also take out the 6 main guns (after engines). For me that is slightly faster as long as I don’t run into and get stuck on the debris of broken guns.

Well I did manage to get myself a Dreadnaught.
Slipped in under its tail & popped its main warp drive engines. Then wandered down the trenches, leisurely destroing the shield generators or whatever they are.
Made no attempt on a gun turrets or to assist the Civilian Freighter from missiles or anything.
Pirates gave up as soon as their shields were down. Before I did the swap, I called in my own freighter & stored all my freighter techs first.
Was nice to find you can customise the colours & engine glow.
Was a bit dissapointed that the hanger & bridge turned back to regular looking areas after the first warp. Must be reset when all the alarms get deactivated.
Anyway, was a pretty straightforward exercise & now my pirate has a proper Pirate Ship.

EDIT; just read that on Experimental there is a fix in the works for the hanger changing to regular.

I don’t understand why this update and expedition were called Omega. There is nothing final or ending about it, unless it’s secretly the last new expedition we will get, and all others will be reruns of past expeditions

Me neither but continuing the Greek mythology theme, Leto is the mother of Apollo and Artemis.
I am intrigued by the use of the dot underneath the final letter in omega for the cover art


As far as I can tell, this is used in unicode…and omega itself also refers to NULL in unicode…
And Apollo, Artemis and NULL are all central to the lore.
Another reason for a diacritic, or dot under a letter, means it is pronounced differently than usual. It could even alter the meaning of the word.
So my personal thought, SM is telling us this is not the common meaning of Omega.

Ohh lucky!
I was just about to power up the PS5 & check on things.
Guess I’ll just avoid Expedition 12 for a while.
I noticed that the existing saves resort back to the primary save I used for the expedition upon turning off so I’m hoping I can just go about my ‘piratey business’ & allow HG to sort the newest bug.

I did notuce some ‘leakiness’ in the saved text, with my Pirate save being renamed my expedition’s base name & my multitool getting renamed to the name I used in the expedition. Quite messy.
There’s also been some odd intermittent lag & hang screens while renaming things.
Makes me a tad nervous…

Someone posted that on PS5, the completed research project is not triggering. That’s better than frozen in time.

Ok…now it seems you can freeze even if not interacting with the research project.
However, if you die, it fixes the whole thing.

Hmmm… I never had much problem with stability in NMS, but this iteration seems to hang or crash regularly for me. Bit of a pitty, that. Not sure if I’ll manage to finish the expedition at this rate. And it’s the first one in some time that I actually intended to finish.

I hope (and assume) that Hello Games is getting some good experience with improving the stability of the Expedition started from the Anomaly.

Future Expeditions hopefully will be at least a bit smoother.
