Datamining(Maximum Spoilers)

Keeping the development team small helps reduce costs significantly. Also, they can get paid pretty well to show up for interviews and as high-profile guest speakers at events. But the amount can only go on for so long that you’d still have to eventually start selling “something”(merch store, another game, in-game ads in the form of cross-overs).

I’m glad they are keeping the money flowing using non-predatory methods. And its good that they are still improving the engine and performance of the game. Seems they still intend to keep the game going for as long as possible .

To be honest, I still don’t mind if they add in-game purchases as long as its only for cosmetic items, serves no benefit in-game other than just a cosmetic item to show your support, and is very low-cost. Cosmetic items such as a photo of the HG team that you can place in your base($1), decals($0.25), bobbleheads($1), or just a “few” exosuit modifications($1), not like Elite, where nearly all cosmetic modifications cost real money.

@Jupiter.blues – Bobbleheads are a usable feature that affect starship performance, not just decoration.

@Dragonsire – I look at Expeditions as abnormal updates, not regular ones. So I don’t expect new features. If some come, great; an unexpected gift.

I assume new features will arrive in the Anniversary update.

Ohyea. Forgot about that. I guess bobbleheads that have no stat bonuses I guess?

I had no idea that bobbleheads had a bonus stat lol

I don’t believe for a second there wont be an update very soon. After all the Nvidia update is coming, the next quicksilver tier needs catalog update to make available in game.

If the BUBPIPE pieces(4) are in fact “Bubble Pipes”, they are referenced as transparent materials, used in reference with the cooking station for the bubble effect . Or in cannisters with water in them. It would be cool be they were used to transport water for usage in cooling tower or water pump objects…but since they are quicksilver…could be anything…

But regardless we need icons and name/decription entries for the quicksilver items… they aren’t going to ignore not having them active for long. Especially with the time limit
on Expedition 2.

Nope it’s ending so something else can take it’s place. So it wont be long. Even if small…there will be another update soon.

The Orange Box? I have that as a blueray ps3 disc right next to me. I don’t even have a PlayStation… I bought it as my contribution to the shared office PlayStation. (We didn’t have a gaming budget. But the managers said we have a budget to buy devices to test Java ME compatibility. The manager ordered a xerox, and the developers ordered a ps3.)

I recall that for consoles, all NMS updates are monolithic, and for PC, they can sometimes release them as smaller patches. Was the last update several GB? I didn’t look at the time to be honest …

I only used the Orange Box as an example of how much game can be packed into so many gigabytes. In the days when a standalone game came on a DVD, you knew how big it was. Nowadays, with mandatory online connections, parts of your game get regularly replaced, and parts of the game you see may actually be running on somebody else’s computer - or several other computers. So how can you know how big your game is?

AFAIK. the Playstation doesn’t, and can’t, download individual game files. This is because the PS DRM scheme requires all the files for an application to be munged together into a single encrypted wrapper, If you want to change any part of it, you have to change the whole thing. This makes updates secure - but huge.

PCs on Steam are not subject to such restrictions, and, in the past, NMS updates have tended to only involve the files that have changed. So an update that might involve many gigabytes on PS, will often only be a few megabytes on PC.

The last update, however, was 3.7 gigabytes on PC. My comparison with the Orange Box was to point out that that’s more than enough data to contain the whole of several complex, graphics-heavy games.

I accept that It’s possible HG just took the easy route, and replaced files they didn’t need to - but that hasn’t generally been their practice in the past. In the history of NMS, large updates have tended to indicate major changes in the game.

I just read this post to my PlayStation and No Man’s Sky player son. He had a good laugh.

The files downloaded are PAK files. Containing numerous files structures inside using small blocks of zip compression. Some of the larger files that contain textures etc, even if they change 1 entry the whole PAK would need to be updated.

The huge updates for sometimes very small changes is irritating, especially when it’s just follow-up bugfixes. Mods for the game generally contain override replacements for the individual files within those big paks. However, a mod can just assemble all its files into a single add-on pak. It seems like HG could really benefit from the same system for their smaller updates. Just roll up the few changed/new files into a smaller override patch pak and release that. Then wait for the really big updates to properly update the main paks with the files from the previous patches.

I’m the opposite…I like big files as sometimes future items sneak their way in.

„I like big files and I cannot lie“ :innocent:

I recall when NMS was released every one was in awe that it was only „4“ GB (don’t recall the exact number) and that the procedural generation compressed whole galaxies into that. And someone responded most of these 4GB was the procedural soundtrack.

Can you check which data type increased after the last update? Models/Textures or music?

PS: and follow-up question, if I may: can you tell whether the recent updates add files or replace files? (In what ratio a combination of both)

Apparently not
I am not convinced though, end even if it doesn’t work, there is likely more related to be found

That was a quick dead-end. Can find the whole interaction in the NMS_DIALOG_GCALIENPUZZLETABLE for the Space Station Core, but it appears no ‘reward’ is specified, which would normally show what happens next.

There is a Damaged Space Station Core as well, once again, without any rewards specified.
