Archaeological Digs

For new players, processing slime etc. is one way to get nanites, but for a fully decked out character, these are peanuts.

Archaeology — Junk vs Value

@sheralmyst @DevilinPixy

Click ā€˜SUMMARY’ for a full breakdown…

Summary

BEYOND vs ORIGINS - 2 very different eras!

I can see that the opening post has now been edited to reflect the following…

Summery of the above…

However…

ā€˜Recovered Items’ and ā€˜Valuable Rock Samples’ do not always ā€˜PROCESS’ into or result in ā€œJUNK.ā€

For instance…

Valuable Rock Sample:

Dig up the rock, and then mine the rock…

image

Result? - Receive ā€˜Valuable Rock Sample’

Next, analyze the ā€˜Valuable Rock Sample’

Result? - Receive ā€˜Enriched Alloy Metal’

This is valuable - not ā€œJUNKā€ !

Next…

There are - (at least 2) - different kinds of ā€˜Recovered Items’

And it varies what you get back from these…

For instance…

At 1st glance, ā€œLOST SUMBLIMATION PUMPā€ may sound like ā€˜JUNK’… but if you ā€˜DISMANTLE’ it, although it says, ā€œProcess damaged technology into partsā€ā€¦ you actually get back from it…

  • Cadmium, Tritium, Indium, Gold, Platinum, etc.

These are ā€˜VALUABLE’ substances! - No?

image

At 1st glance, ā€œMINERAL RECORDā€ or ā€œSPECIES RECORDā€ (or otherwise ā€œDiscovery Dataā€) or something similar… may sound like fragmented pieces of ā€˜JUNK’… but if you ā€˜ANALYZE’ it, you’ll ā€œProcess data into Nanitesā€ā€¦

This is ā€˜VALUABLE’ currency! - No?

However…

ā€˜Recovered Items’ that result in ā€œJUNKā€ā€¦

image

Thus resulting in ā€˜JUNK’…

And in this case ā€˜RUNAWAY MOULD’, with a total value of $1,120 UNITS…

Not nearly as valuable as certain ā€˜FOSSILS’ and ā€˜HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS’…

However…

This is ā€˜VALUABLE’ currency! - No?

Conclusion…

ā€œOne man’s junk is another man’s treasureā€

@sheralmyst

Due to the ORIGINS update greatly expanding the list of what can be unearthed, the thread title and concept of ā€œArchaeological Digsā€ (which hearkens back to the BEYOND era) is facing the dilemma of a drastically changed, enriched and even weirder universe, where the process of ā€˜DIGGING’ for ā€˜BURIED TREASURE’ is no longer so easily defined as ā€œARCHAEOLOGYā€ for the purpose of unearthing ā€˜FOSSILS’ and ā€˜HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS’.

Why? — Because, in ORIGINS, we unearth anything, everything and then some.

Therefore, I see 2 options…

  1. Let everyone keep posting ALL their findings here in this one thread;
  2. Or — Create multiple threads, breaking down every possible finding.

So far, the exception is The Black Market thread, but do note that these can be unearthed, as well. And also note, that there is a fine line between ā€˜VALUE’ and ā€˜JUNK’, because even junk has value.

And therefore, perhaps…

With the exception of The Black Market…

I’d suggest allowing all unearthed items in this ONE thread.

Fortunately, and you can test this theory, :hole: I believe the holes refill after sometime.

They only seem to remain, when dug around the base, or unless in that case restored.

Hi on the topic of junk items unless they have changed it in Origins update,

Runaway Mould can be refined into nanites

Refining path:

Residual Goop > Viscous Fluids > Living Slime > Runaway Mold > Nanites

I was warping to my planet when a Korvax hailed me and I did a trade with him and received this…

This item is very similar to what is awarded at a colossal building, if turning in a Biological Sample. The same thing happen to me with this item, but it was from being hailed by an anomalous object…

And so what I found is a :pick: lost artifact and a terrifying relic. :scream:

I am fine with whatever you all think fits the topic of Archaeological Digs. I just added the 2 new categories to the sheet, because from what I understood so far, they are found in more or less the same way, by digging them up, hoping for it to be treasure. I could be wrong though, as I have not really played the new update just yet, nor have I had a chance to data-mine the source files.

If the process is indeed the same, I just figured I might as well track those finds in the sheet, regardless of whether it fits this topic or requiring a new topic. I just managed to utilise the same sheet by adding a single column. If need be, I can track these in a separate sheet as well, by adding an extra tab instead, making it easier to differentiate between them.

It is obvious that the mechanic is somewhat different, even though some of the descriptions share similarities with previous categories. With these new ones, you break them down by processing or analysing, to receive nanites, items, parts, or resources instead of turning them in at your local Trade Station. The ā€˜static’ value of these rewards all appear to be quite a bit lower, although game value can be debated of course.

I am actually curious if all the previous categories still exist, or if some of them have been removed or changed. It does appear, from some of your finds, that already existing categories are still present and unaltered (so far).

Either way, I’ll leave it up to you all to decide what to do with the new finds. Not having played just yet, I am in no position to have a say in this. I do however wonder, if the process is truly similar, if it merits a separate topic just because the reward is not quite the same. Having a separate topic for these, may end up being confusing to some?

There is so much to dig up now it could easily become confusing. Let’s just go with what we have and see what happens.

I am totally fine with that and will just roll with it. This update came with loads of changes, leaving everyone somewhat confused for now I guess. I am sure we will all figure it out eventually, with a lot of ā€˜new ground’ to cover

The ones I’ve seen do correspond to discoveries on the planet.

After excavating the remains of some long forgotten plants,

I got Faecium from this organic matter after I processed it.

I got Mordite from this organic matter after I processed it.

So these ā€œhairy remainsā€ resulted poop :poop: and quite a lot, actually…

While the Kraken tendril :octopus: resulted death :skull_and_crossbones: and of a similar amount.

Suggestion

Cutting back on confusion…

Why not simplify the title of this thread and its description:

Archaeology :gem:

Share all your ancient relics here, regardless of how weird, or however they may be found.

Otherwise, an alternative would be…

Alienology :gem:

Why? Because what is unearthed from digging can also be unearthed from trade negotiations, reward systems and a long future of updates yet to come, with potentially even more anomalous items and likewise interactions. In other words, less emphasis on digging and more focus on the cultural exchange.

I found this at an ancient ruins…

Fossil Samples like the above aren’t accepted at the Colossal Building.

Previously…

So I then traded it at a Colossal Building…

And I got this in return…

All of the recovered broken items and blobs of matter have exactly the same descriptions. They really do not belong in this topic. They are not really worth cataloguing. However, I have added Metal Detector Enthusiasts in the intro to try and explain these new items.

I will leave it up to @DevilinPixy to decide if we want to catalogue these species records. I am afraid there may be so many of them…but they are interesting because I wonder if this planet and this animal actually exist in the game someplace and if we were to go there (which would only be possible if we knew what system it is in) would it show as discovered? Probably asking for way too much.

At the new Celestial Archives what type of biological samples does it except?

Also, where do I find these biological samples?
