Worlds part 2 - Update 5.50 (Spoilers)

And stop making all my fauna discoveries extinct. I’m starting to think that my NMS avatar is a necromancer. XD

You’ve just lived a long, long time, Traveller. But you might also be a necromancer, let’s not rule that out.

Springs, flowing streams, waterfalls, animated water of all sorts.

You can see in this photo the impact to the water from summoning it’s minions exposed the strip of sea floor leading up to me, second photo shows the water back to somewhat undisturbed levels.

There’s a better view of a minion summon effecting the water here, like it just went super saijan. It’s hard to catch the water ripples etc in photos though, definitely give it a try for yourselves to see it in action.

Here I managed to get a good shot of its missiles effecting water, by making myself an unmoving target and hovering over the camera button.

And some misc shots of it wading through the water and making waves, the first one has the aftermath of a missile impact near me while the boss pushes forward a huge wave with it’s body, was fun when they collided. Sadly pics will have to do for now.

Hmm, 22 hour long outage on the Auth servers… Wonder whats going on at HG’s end? Wonder if Iain Brown’s busy with something else.

About the same amount of time PSN was down for, it’s sorta kinda back up now but some functionality disabled, can’t view account management for example.

Wow. Just wow. Lost in the general astonishment of water reflections…

This is a view from my new base location. I know, it’s not really remarkable, but it is sort of cool in that it is at longitude zero, latitude zero. Anyway, 400 units or so that way is a Gek monument.

I know…but wait…

At a certain time of day, very briefly…

It does that.

Reminds me of a rare experience I once had.

One early morning, I’m sitting on my front steps (facing west) & for no particular reason I’m looking up, admiring the crisp, clear blue sky.
Suddenly, just by fluke I see a single very bright pinpoint flash of sunlight reflected from miles above me.

Turns out what I witnessed is called a satelite flare : A chance glint of reflection off an orbiting satelite.

Let’s be clear here. That’s what two guys in black suits and dark glasses, both named “Smith”, told you you’d seen.

An iridium flare is what I would love to see. Though not all satellites use it, iridium is the brightest.

Hokay. I tried to post some of this the other day, and nobody seemed to notice. Let’s try again.

No Man’s Sky now has proper running water. There are fast-flowing streams, waterfalls, boiling plunge pools, rock springs - every aspect of animated running water you could wish for.

The down side is, I’ve only found it on the floating islands.

If you go to a planet with floating islands, look for a larger one with this particular rock on top. I’ve seen it on several planets now, and they all had a spring flowing from them.

Land on the floating island, look around. There are streams and waterfalls. Very pretty.

For anyone who’s interested, here’s the portal address for the planet with the waterfalls posted above.

If you go there, look on the larger floating islands.

Yes. They are beautiful. I think we got them while you were down. We asked for running water and got it. I have a hard time finding these planets so I kept the one from the expedition that took us to them.
I wonder if LNF has running rivers…and if we will see them in NMS. We kept saying it was impossible but I don’t use that word with HG any more

Yes, this is an older feature from a reasonably recent update. I found them aesthetically pleasing but treacherous to walk around on near the edges.
I actually prefered a ground base where I can see the islands rather than perch on one.

Having said that, I recently built a very simple teleporter vase on a floating island in my permadeath game. I stopped on one to check out the new views during the recent update & it just so happened to have a power hotspot & I needed a gateway base having just moved to Eissentam.

Its always fun to stumble over some feature that has been introduced that you were unaware of.

Oh dear. You see what getting sick has done to me? I thought this was all new.

Never mind. It’s still very pretty.

It’s also technically intriguing. It looks like it only happens on the floating islands because the Devs can implement special physics and special voxels - but they can only do it in an isolated area. It won’t work with the rest of the game.

It’s the only way they could have made it work… The geometry of the floating islands is generated as one piece, so it is not difficult to propagate a river through it. And once it drops off the island, it can just stop propagating.

All a bit simpler than if you don’t know which way the terrain will go…

So far, what I have seen is perfectly within the limitations I talked about. They surprised me, but not by overcoming those limitations, but by finding a limited scope in their generation in which they do not apply.

As for LNF… since that’s only one planet, there are actually ways to overcome these limitations in a reasonable manner (dwarf fortress does it too, after all). That is, you can analyse the terrain and pre-generate river flows and store the resulting map, and then re-integrate that information with the procgen on-the-fly. This is a perfectly feasible way to solve the issue and will consume far less storage space than the average texture library of a AAA game. If you limit the scope to one planet instead of a couple quintillion…

They were pretty rare sights up until the recent update made them appear across multiple biomes.

I’m waiting for the update to sort out the collision box on it so we can sit IN the stream/spring and not ON it. Great for taking photos where you have achieved inner zen though.

Discovery services have been down on the PSN side of things all weekend, I thought was cos of PSNs 24 hr down time at first but it seems to me like HG’s Disco Services are actually down? (Edit: back now, cross save working again too.)

Was it the same on other platforms?

Hoping the weeks start will bring some word, stop delaying our decals :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit:

I’ve yet to do Stellar Multitudes on my pc main.

I was thinking before I do, I will find a spot on a planet and take a picture of the night sky at the same time before and after the purple stars are restored. Should make for a good comparison if I can line both shots up closely enough.

Edit: (Allows time for rusted cogs to move) oh I could just do it rn by moving both my saves to the same position :hugs:

I have had on again off again disco servers on PC since the update

I’d never seen it how it was on PSN the weekend, it just didn’t give any upload options next to names in the discovery list, and bottom left it was a blue symbol saying “discovery services are currently down”.

Seemed like it was genuinely out of action, I’m used to the usual orange symbol when things get a little screwy after an update and it fails to get a response. The blue symbol was another no mans sky first for me. Worlds 2 just keeps giving em
