What's Hubbening? - Transmissions from the Galactic Community

Hello fellow Etarcians, after having so much fun with UD and defying our reclusive nature, I thought this might be a nice landing pad for cross-community posts and advertisements; for anyone who might be feeling sociable or interested in taking part in a communities weekly happenings, or maybe even just a cursory understanding of specific hubs themselves.

I figured I’d start fresh and post as new events come into being and maybe even drop some messages to other Hub folk as I come in to contact with them, to let them know this is a perfectly fine place to advertise their events when putting the memo’s out

This will also help me from hitting the 3 post limit and leaving this thread dead :stuck_out_tongue:

So without further ado, first few out the gate…

Some of these events will require joining the Hubs Discord to get the travel details, however this is not always the case and I will provide those details when possible.

For example, this event happened the other day and is an example of the kind of things that will be posted here, moreso than an image of something currently happening.

It is nice to know about these other events. Even if I cannot join them, I like to go poke about in whatever was built for them.

Good idea for a new thread!

Now conducting solo tours. You always get the best seat on the starship because it is the only seat.

Our first meet up since corvettes were added and we never went on a group drive, not even for a short amount of time, obeying the no corvette rules like the good citizens we are.

I’ll build one where every seat is the best seat

Another Neoterra event has landed.

Neoterra Collective Builder Workshop | City Intersection Build

Meeting time: <t:1768183200> Jan 12th, 2am(GMT)
Duration: 30 minutes to 1 hour

This week’s workshop focuses on urban scale and shared vision!

We will be collaboratively building a believable city intersection anchored by four exterior skyscrapers. :cityscape:
Interior design is optional for anyone who wants to take it further.

This session builds on techniques covered in previous workshops, including wire placement, cache glitch fundamentals, and working at scale. The goal is to better understand proportion, sightlines, and how multiple structures relate to each other in a shared space.

All experience levels are welcome! Questions and experimentation are encouraged. For more information, please reach out to our workshop host, <@897536416224006184>

Hope to see you there! <:GekSafety:882689746252468224>

Feb 5 is the launch of Artemis 2 and a slingshot trip around the moon. It will carry a full crew . Maybe we should set up an event of our own for that day.

The mission will last 10 days with a free return slingshot around the moon.

We could use the 10 day period to gather and hold our breath while we build, fish or just picnic under the stars while gazing towards the heavens

I’m not celebrating anything until that crew is safely back on the ground. Artemis gives me the willies…

So the first project of the Slingshot Event is to build a place of comfort and respite for @jedidia to recover after their nerves have been shot and the crew have returned

I like this idea but I’m way too anxious about being a party planner/lack experience. I was an assistant to an events planner, not THE events planner, so thats where I’ll stay. Well, I was the “planner” while they were on maternity leave and I am still stressed about it years after the fact

I like the relaxed time frame on this too, 10 days is plenty of time for anyone to pop in and out around their own schedule, reduces any intense FOMO people may carry and you don’t come away feeling like a Disney Employee dashing to save the audience from a Rogue Boulder.

I know the feeling. I think you are having the Apollo 13 jitters.

I don’t do big parties. But we could all gather and build or whatever. Let me see if I have a nice paradise planet with no storms.

The Haven Map Project just opened up the admin/sub-admin account creation to be used by communities, you can still submit personal uploads to the map without having to create an account. However a discord user name will be required for security purposes/grief prevention, which is explained better below through the link.

As a result, the folk behind the project have published a User Guide which I think will explain to everyone here, better than I could, the power and flexibility of the program.

Another programmer also JUST got in touch, offering their python script up to be used within the 3d maps software.

Their python script has reverse engineered how the game generates region names. Currently, we have to take note of region names, then after a star system has been accept onto the map, we can apply its region name. This wonderful donation will save a lot of time if it can pull this info from glyphs alone <3

I’ve been actively participating in the 3d map project for just a week and seen it grown so much, the form for data submission has gotten more user friendly and the map is slowly gaining more functionality with search terms and filters.

Here’s a recent snap of whats been shared to the 3d map (we all seem to like hanging out in the outer-ish rim :P)

It’s actually a Region map, on its top layer. The brighter a dot, the more charted regions in that area. NMS regions are placed in a grid like fashion that isn’t noticeable in game.

Here’s a side view of the regions I’ve logged from my Permadeath game to give an example

Clicking a region will then bring you into its star chart. Here’s one from two very busy cartographers with 250 systems in it (I’ve seen ones from GalHub with almost 600 stars!)

(dont mind the white glyphs bottom right, I have chrome set to experimental mode > force dark mode, and it does this with thumbnails sometimes)

Another fun fact I learned from the map…

The Dimensions of a NMS Galaxy is roughly the same as a Pizza Box. Which is the most crunch mode game dev answer to “what shape is the universe” I’ve ever heard.

“It’s just stacked pizza boxes the whole way down maaaaan”

Sorry if I missed something while reading about the map project. What’s the difference to the one that HG started on their homepage?

I see we can submit systems and planets for our “civilisation”. I never named anything ETARC but I frequently use the Atlas sticker on my bases. So I could submit something but…

I’m too lazy to type glyphs and names and all. Where are our discoveries stored, probably also locally? Are they not serialised in a way that can be read? Would be cool if we could automatically extract discoveries and select the ones we want to upload.

There actually is a mod for that  It extracts the info when you arrive to a system into a spreadsheet, then you can just copy paste the info over for submission to the 3d map. The Haven Discord has a resource thread of mods that will make data submission easier for PC players. I can get you the link for the mod if you like?

It works very similar to the one HG set up back in 2018 before Beyond update launched, except its a 3d representation rather than a 2d map, and in time should give a better understanding of the current state of the NMS universe. The info we are submitting is stored on the server being run by the programmer of the project.

For community leaders (requires a community discord presence and a few other things) theres also the ability to upload mass amount of system data via xml or other bulk methods. E.G a Galactic Hub representative arrived a few days ago and added 5000 systems to the map in the space of a second.

There is also restriction controls for communities, where they pick what info is public on the map and which info is private and visible to just their members when logged in. As grief-proof as an approach has been taken where possible

Eventually when the filter side of the code is fully implimented, you’ll be able to key in “lush, planet rings, water, blissful weather, peaceful sentinels, etc etc” and see all charted systems on the 3d map containing these planets with the exact criteria. It will essentially allow a more streamlined approach to finding a specific planet. It removes the joy of discovery somewhat but it would be good for those days where you’re short on time or just don’t want to keep seeing warp loading screens

Yes please

So I just have to revisit the most interesting ones again to init the spreadsheet?
The biomes of my oldest discoveries have changed anyway, so it makes sense to reevaluate.

The access to download seems restricted to the Discord channel, I’ve uploaded it to my GDrive, let me know if this doesn’t work, I think I set the sharing permissions up right.

I’ll send it as a Private Message for now until I get permission from the owner to leave a hot link here.

I havent tried it myself but apparently

“All you have to do it extract it and click the “run_haven_extractor” batch file”

Some folk have confirmed it’s working so I’ll take their word for it.

Maybe we should join as a community. What would that require? Is it possible?

Also I found a paradise planet with refreshing breezes, lakes, trees, little white fluffy puffs blowing in the breeze. It is fuchsia. So as long as no one is sickened by the color, it could be a good spot. VyKeen. Untroubled. Tier 2 high tech economy. A nice range of planet types in the system. And it has flying cows. I could stake a claim for Feb 5.

It unfortunately, requires a Discord Community to be set up, this is to prevent griefing, etc. They look complicated to get set up to the gold standard other hubs are using, but it’s through this that your Community Tag/Logo will be applied to community uploads, it also allows a community leader to set up sub-admin accounts to approve submissions.

The submissions require approval before appearing on the map, as an admin or a sub admin you can’t approve your own submissions, you also cannot see the identity of the uploader (again for security purposes) just whether it was a personal upload, or submitted by a community. Usernames will only be visible to Haven leaders who will only be using it to DM the user on Discord to check some things or hold a griefer to accountability.

This is the main reason a discord username is required (you submit your username on submission, no need to log in with your discord or set up an account with the haven map project).

I have been granted sub-admin access so I can approve any submissions that come in

I think it’s safe to say everyone here is comfortable with Fuschia and its surrounding spectrum. I haven’t seen anyone ask to change our forums background colour yet anyway

Cool. I have a discord account so I am going to be submitting soon

I will claim everything and mark Feb 5 as reserved. We can gather whether the launch takes place or not.

I may try to set a few things up to get it ready.

Come prepared for a certain level of eeriness as even the shallow water has glowing lights that seemingly come from nowhere :ghost:
