NMS 10 Year Celebration

Edit:

We (ETARC) have been invited to participate in the planning and execution of the big 10 year party! More info will follow later.

You can also get more info from @ThatBomberBoi

Edit: if anyone has ideas about what they would like to do, please share!

Just to clarify, there has been a discord set up for community leaders. We will relay info to our wonderful group here as it becomes available.

I don’t think we can break that peak.

Well, I think we could if we could also track other platforms :stuck_out_tongue:

I like to look at the graph this way, without the launch day tourists

because of the knee jerk,” I didn’t read the interviews leading up to launch and just imagined an impossible game,” cry babies that called the game a bunch of lies and sent many death threats to a studio, and in their silence, filled it with bad faith assumptions like “took the money and ran” etc to the point that we still have people calling these free releases etc a redemption arc or earning back favour etc. (video from 2015 discusses post launch plans and the state of MP at launch etc which everyone missed I guess? )

It irks me because it feels like everyone is participating in a lie, from 2016… and well, that just feels like everything now. Did no mans sky kickstart the post truth society we all exist in now? :joy:

All that aside, I’d be happy to see that peek beaten but I think most games have a huge spike on launch that’s never really touched again. So this isn’t unusual, Though the drop off isn’t usually that steep as it was with NMS

Let’s do this!!!

I think we could participate as a group by emailing HG every week with a reminder that they should totally celebrate the tenth Anniversary with live player counts across all platforms. For… reasons. Give us all the engagement data. I want that discovery timelapse you envisioned before launch

I knew nothing about NMS. I just happened to pick it up at Game Stop because it looked cool. :upside_down_face:

Then I realized it was a game that could not possibly be finished but had great potential and I lay it down until the ARG. Have not put it down since.

As for what to do on the special day, base building seems an obvious choice. Maybe a big community base, now that we have a decal…

Since the ARG brought us all here, maybe building somewhere related to the ARG would be a good match?

I remember the tapes led to a comm ball somewhere in the game, I think this was one of the only times the ARG did that, perhaps we could do some community building in that system if it’s not too crowded already or find the nearest purple system to it since it’s less likely to have people making pilgrimage, come full circle.

Edit:

My memory is terrible, turns out there were several locations in game during the phases of the ARG.

Was pre-portal days so folk had to get there via pilgrim app.

This Reddit post has handily supplied the glyphs for each system

I would assume as well that the comm balls are now in space or inside of planets.

I suppose a fun project for now could be visiting these sites and cataloguing their current state.

Edit 2:

I visited the first system, the portal leads to an irradiated planet with giant egg like flora that seem to be in bloom or hatching some sort of fauna?

There are only two bases in the system, one being a handy jumping point to find where the original comm ball is (fly directly above the base)/

Not as crowded as I was expecting. A good sign

Screenshots inbound, just gotta message em to myself, save off the PS app and then fail processing/upload 3-6 times while uploading to this post :stuck_out_tongue:

stream of exploring the WT portal addresses

Edit:

The third system had a good few comm balls left by players, came across two next to each other, one saying hello and the other saying hello to you too <3

This would have all taken place before the light monuments were added upon player encounters (i miss those)

The fourth system has a player base that was built sometime within the last 4 years I think (it has the ladders and cherrypicker thingy, I think they came with the derelicts? or sometime before then?).

It’s in a very nice position and winds its way into a natural cave. I was very impressed with the overall aesthetic on approach, felt like a fitting base for a WT system. It also has a very pretty orange and red interior on the space station <3

Well we have a whole year to scope out the universe and find a good spot.

Personally, I would like a pristine spot away from the hub bub but I will do whatever.

Maybe our builds could be flashbacks to the ARG. Can anyone do one of those Emily pics you see from orbit

I could prolly manage a giant cassette tape. Maybe once you enter, you see all the sleep pods from the game @DevilinPixy made for us.

Just tossing ideas.

We may decide to just build whatever each one wants, as closely together as we can.

The whole point is be online on that day, regardless of what we do.

No ideas have been put forward on the discord yet. They are still pulling people in.

Being a massive data nerd, I think I’d be more excited for that than whatever this next exped + update is

HG’s gameanalytics setup is pretty detailed, I’ve seen the game make net requests to their API after so many seemingly menial tasks, that HGs gotta have an insane dataset on the player base by now, and that doesn’t even include the discovery servers.

No Man’s Sky records everything the player does. How many steps you take, where you take them, how many shots you fire, what they hit (if anything), How many times you fly your ship, how many times you warp jump - it just goes on and on - and it’s all quietly recorded in the background. Almost every keystroke or mouse movement you make gets stored. Given the size of the save files, I have no idea where all that data goes - but go it does.

If you wanted to study player behaviour, NMS is the ultimate data collection application.

Somewhere around 12k hours played (probably a lot more tbh) , over 4 profiles and 2 PS generations. its got me thorough a divorce, covid and many other obstacles. Straight to Putin, Seans been a russian asset for years. And due to new international law, he’s a massive anti-Semite like the rest of Ireland.

He truly is a monster. No mans Lies was just a big scam to build capital for the ruskis and shatter the morale of Americas gaming elite.

Open your eyes to the truth and close your ears to anyone who tries to tell you I’m making all of this up.

@dersvr sorry to hear you’ve had a rough few years, hopefully the collective dredge that’s been haunting us all fecks on soon, it’s certainly been my most challenging five or so years too, karma owes us something soon I’m pretty sure. Until then, stay safe and happy trails Traveller

Yeah, many articles still refer to a failed launch and broken promises. An American politician once said that if their candidates repeated a lie enough times with enough emphasis, if would affect voters.

The “Sean lied” lie keeps getting new life. Alpha and beta development status and plans are never, ever “promises."

When asked pre-launch if players would be able to walk on asteroids, Sean replied, “At the moment, yes." Even that careful wording got twisted into a “promise." Argh!

I never over-hyped myself, so I loved the released game.

I couldn’t agree more. Whilst the launch version of the game did suffer from huge over-expectation on the part of both players and the gaming media, almost none of that came from Sean Murray. It came from people making inflated and unrealistic claims for the game, largely to enhance their own status on social media.

When it turned out that their exaggerated claims were wrong, those same social media participants sought to salvage their positions and popularity by turning on, and attacking, Hello Games - for not fulfilling “promises” they never made in the first place.

Sean Murray was indeed at fault in this process - but not because he lied. He was at fault because he was naive, and did not clamp down hard on excessive and overblown third-party claims about his game. He compounded this by accepting a bad deal with Sony - which gave them the power to force the game’s release before it was fully ready.

And now the same people who caused the problem in the first place - the gaming media and the social media participants (I’m looking at you, Reddit) have the bare-faced gall not only to perpetuate the lie, but “forgive” Sean & Co - because they came good in the end.

If there’s a lesson at all here, it is “Just like politicians, never trust journalists or social media influencers”. They are only interested in their own popularity - they will build you up, if it suits them - but they will just as happily throw you under a bus, if they think it will gain them votes. And even when they’ve done both, they will still claim they were right all along.

Do continue to take good care of yourself. I am happy to see you again, as I have missed you out here. Looking forward to celebrate the upcoming milestone, 10 years of NMS, with all of you!

Used this site with a NMS palette
image

Could probably be done slightly better, maybe an increased palette using glitched colours.
Pixelart will be about 54x54 max to be within upload limits

I am open to ideas to create something truly special. Maybe even some sort of mini-game/puzzle/story, combining various bases

That looks like she has a beard…

I really need to squint my eyes, but not sure this will work well. Not even a clue how it picks the colours from the palette I made.

I just used this with a colour picker.

A similar site, gets this as a 54x54 result

Here’s the source I used

Maybe greyscale works better? Limit palette to 5?

I am thinking, what was the big goal, everyone’s dream when they first started playing NMS? To get to the center! Back then, it seemed a near impossible task.

I know the center of Euclid is crowded but if you back up a bit, there is still a lot of real estate.

Why don’t we all search near the center for the perfect system. Maybe work up a list. Don’t share any glyphs just yet. Just share pics and environmental stats.

I have a base very close to the center since I first arrived there…I can’t remember what the system is like. The planet is a bubble-filled, curly grass thing with the egg-shaped thing

And didn’t really like being the spokesman, but got pushed into it.

It really angered me when vicious flamers even twisted his shy behavior and referred to him “hanging his head in shame" during presentations.

Then, to top it off, some people checked on who was doing the flaming after launch. They found that a lot had not even bought the game. Antisocial hoodlums flaming "for fun.”
