Weather and Shelter

I’ve always found the weatherproofing properties of buildings in NMS pretty hit-or-miss. Sometimes I can be protected from the weather, sometimes it can creep in if I’m too close to the walls, and sometimes I’m only protected if I stand right close up to the base computer.

However, on the giant planets, I’m finding that some of my buildings don’t give any protection at all. Wind, cold, heat and electrical storms just blow right through the walls and roof.

Any tips or observations on this?

I’ve heard rumors that It’s a special feature if you’re playing in the UK to make the game feel more realistic… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Well, it’s true that we get more than our fair share of rain. And it’s also true that, being mostly built of brick, our houses are not the warmest.

On the other hand, the crops mostly grow when we want them to, nobody ever dies of thirst, and the houses don’t blow away in the wind.

Some you win, some you lose.

Ach, come one, HG was washed away by rain only that one time:smirk:

Interesting

I wonder if it relates to different material types , wood, metal, “concrete” etc

Has anyone tested and checked if the material used makes any difference?

ie more robust materials (takes more resources ) are needed on more extreme weather/environment planets

So far I’ve only tried wood and stone - and they seem to be equally unpredictable. Sometimes they give no protection at all - it’s like standing outside.

I am up for a science experiment. Headed to a gas giant now.
It is true the weather blows right thru all structures. But I am protected from its affects. Even when standing near an open door or window
wood

stone

metal

same with the old building parts too

Hanging out here for a bit to observe
I have noticed a lot of light bleeding in thru the walls. Similar to what we have had in the past. As if the walls and ceilings are not really coming together well.

The ground is not really flattening out either.
Hung out for a while and remained unaffected by the weather blowing thru the building. It was quite a bit more quiet inside as well.

Stone base on giant planet. Nothing special - four walls, and a roof.

Inside the base. Here comes the weather.

Standing next to the base computer does nothing. Look at that health bar drop.

Things are really serious now. Health is at zero.

A bit of fresh air never hurt anyone.

I thought maybe it was because you have no floor. But I tried it and still, no affect from the weather. I even had a tornado spawn right beside me and it had no affect though I could still see the weather inside.

So I tried building around the BC, still safe inside

swapped the roof for a piece of flooring, still no affect

It does have a floor - but the grass grew back through it.

As I said, it’s unpredictable. It doesn’t affect all bases on all planets - but I’ve never seen it as bad as it can be on giant planets. When it’s bad, it’s like there’s no protection at all.

I finally have my console back in the room with pc and more or less next to each other, I’m on a giant planet at the moment, will check a build with cross save and see if there’s any discrepancies with protection or if it actually is just UK localisation features.

I’m wondering as well if there are any other similarities with the bases other than being on giant planets, are you aiming for a similar altitude with all of these or just happenstance/varied? Just want to try and replicate the process as close as possible if there are other present similarities.

I’m hoping you say all high up because altitude/the new height limits would be an easy thing to point to and call it case closed :stuck_out_tongue: Bases built above water on ocean planets have been going entirely invisible so it might be similar teething issues.

I am at the bottom of a hill. I guess I would need to TM down to the bedrock to know what my altitude is…will check

Answering “Are you or are you not on top of a mountain?” will do just fine, no need to destroy ecosystems and habitats with laser bores now.

Well it was very interesting. I TM’d down and quickly hit water then found bedrock. I looked back up towards my ship and was only 42u away. This is a very shallow planet. The top of the hill is only about that far away…going to investigate in a few more locations…
Whole planet no more than 80u deep

Wow. Amazing the diversity of contexts that this sentence fits into.

I decided to build up on top of a mountain on a radioactive giant, not sure how high up, according to my ships waypoint it was 12 minutes walk below me. Maybe 40 seconds if you take the freefall.

I could not replicate inside storms.

I tried checking two other giants I already have bases on including a gas giant.

The bases kept the weather out on console and pc.

I think the next step is to bring one of those house makeover celebrities from the telly out to your base @Polyphemus and let them do a piece to camera about how expensive reinsulation can save you pennies on the year come winter.

Or one of us could pop over and see if we feel a draught at all.

On PS5 I found even a terrain manipulated mud hut was enough to keep the weather out.

Not sure if its related but;
I have found previously that my underwater bases get messy when I build with cuboid rooms & shift the camera view partway through construction.
Once I get a glitchy ‘flooded’ bit I can’t remove it no matter what I do & have had to scrap or change base layouts to get away from it.

My very first building on a gas giant was a wooden base. The rock tornadoes would pick me up and throw me against the walls while I was inside the base. It was one of my very first reports after the launch of Titan.

Unfortunately, that base was buried in the ground when water levels were updated (which I also reported) - so I can’t get pictures now.

From my own experience, I can only say if you’re not seeing it, it’s because you’re not building enough bases.

Will try more gas giants…all for science!

That could be another factor, since I can say I am not.

As much as I love troubleshooting I don’t think I’ll be building dozens of tiny huts to replicate it

I try to keep my max number below 20 and eventually give smaller ones a prune after a few years if they don’t hold any memories for future dementia me

memories for geriatric todd

I have one that’s basic, and doesn’t even have power because it predates the addition, but it’s the first thing I built when I convinced my roommate at the time to play NMS with me and also the night he found out he was gonna be a father and theyd need the spare (my) room in nine months :joy:

My pc playthrough I only have 15 bases but I hit the part limit cos I went OTT with one in a base building desktop program, but I don’t think that’s the same as having a lot of bases built, as I still can’t say this problem is present for me there.

Took a screen last night of my attempt to recreate yr weathered base on a giants mountain.

I’ll build a monument in its place and name it Polyphemountain or mount @Polyphemus , title pending review.
