NMS Archeology

A very interesting project is underway with a number of players conducting some virtual world archeology in NMS. Focussed on player bases affected by the change between different version updates of the game and mainly between Pathfinder 1.2 and Atlas Rises 1.3.

Iā€™ve been following this for a while and it intriques me as to what is ā€˜left behindā€™ when we choose to relocate.
It seems that if we leave a location and no one moves into that system, then our base (or at least a version of it) remains for visitors to still see and interact with.
Given I often move around, I find it facinating that others may stumble across one of my long ago ā€˜abandonedā€™ bases.
Iā€™m yet to understand if there are any ā€˜rulesā€™ as to why a base remains or vanishes upon relocation, but Iā€™d love to know more. Yet another enigma of the NMS universe.

I actually read about this in a story about archaeology. A professor leads a group on digs in NMS. I used to be involved in digs in my state so I thought that was really interesting.
