Well, I for one have always wished, when in photo mode, to be able to turn the camera around and see my own avatar. Though I admit I have some pretty funny pics of Sentinals firing at nothing, because you can’t see it is me they are firing at. Yes, selfies in space would be cool. Selfies with you and your buddies in space, even cooler. (Though, in real life, I hate selfies. 
)

Yunno about the shoulder orbs… That makes perfect sense to do that but how come 2 travelers don’t have one? Would that mean they don’t have photo mode free cam?
Maybe it’s some kind of scout drone tech you can install if that’s your play style. It does have an antenna on it and might be able to travel distances farther than the photo mode bubble. Maybe for checking out places like caves or underwater without putting your traveler in danger.

The way photo mode works presently is, it freezes on your end but say some travellers popped by for tea, you can still see their orbs moving around in real time while in photo mode. I’d say you’re right in that being a thing of the past if we’re going to be hunting resources together.
As for the selfie image it’s originally from a user on reddit, think Sean just re tweeted it. A slight nod to all this smartphone business with the intercepted ware dev kits maybe?
Personally I think the four avatars on the next box art don’t represent what we will look like, same way the avatar on the original nms box art doesn’t.
I gather we will each be our own proc gen traveller and won’t know what we look like until someone else finds us and takes a picture (as was Sean’s original vision)
If not that, then we will be customizable travellers.
Or maybe even both, you start as a proc gen, organic, traveller with the ability to go Full Apollo should you desire to by trading out limbs for bionic and robotic parts.
So I’m trying not to read into what’s on their armor too much in the next artwork. Could just be a visual representation of being more of an explorer than a trader or a fighter. Will be nice if we have class related tech to append to our suits.

Nice thought about Sean’s original vision with not knowing what you look like until someone lets you know.
However, I think I would prefer a customizable third person capable avatar. To further that thought, I would like exosuit attachments like those shown in the picture that differ with function (maybe even separate techs).
