Future Update Speculations

Variation Overhaul

QUESTION:

ANSWER:

Sure. — But I think the addition of more -{ if not ‘ALL’ }- platforms and consoles, and even new content updates, and all these refinement updates — that can altogether feel unrelated to the ‘variation overhaul’ updates that are on the top of every NMS player’s wish list — are merely the beginning.

Yes! The beginning…

I believe that 6 years out from launch, all these new platforms and consoles, and all this fresh content and all these refinements — ‘were’… merely the foundation and the origins of a future that ‘was’ only yet to be written. - ❝The end is not the end, the end is yet the beginning.❞ - The beginning of…

:boom:

And so it was written, and so it came to be.

I don’t know if I have unique preceptive abilities, though I have foreseen a number of things in various subjects real and imaginary. But it gives me warm fuzzies when I see elements in my fic coming to life in the game. One particular little gem was in my plot for more than a year and has yet to appear because I keep stuffing things in front of it.

I was hoping to be getting back to writing, but my head and ears both are a little wooly this morning - and only three hours sleep, oy :weary: - so today looks to be another day of Fallout 4. I’m way too meh to think of trying the Expedition today.

Fallout 4 will do that :scream: If only I could really clean everything up in that game, I would feel a lot better

I’ve dumped a ton o’ mods into it. Not-quite-half weapons, lots of modern weapons. Nearly as many military uniforms and clothing items, and a bunch of doodads and adventure mods besides, including Sim Settlements 2. Which is mostly behaving right now, as I FINALLY restarted the game for like the sixth time in a month trying to get a solid mod order working with it. It’s a great adventure mod, but the most finicky son of a… gun I’ve ever seen. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

By the way, really hoping for a late birthday present from Team Mercury in a few weeks. Keeping my Multitools crossed…

October 7, 2022 = NMS 4.0 and Switch

Since the expedition ends on Sep 21 and —{only 2 weeks later}— NMS Switch releases on Oct 7, I expect a 3.99 bug-fix patch to release shortly and a 4.0 major update to release alongside NMS Switch on Oct 7.

Granted, they may be a little slow releasing that 3.99, since we seem to be running out of numbers here. I mean, 3.99 may have to give way to 3.991, 3.992, 3.993… :face_with_peeking_eye: Sean’s Twitter may be our only lifeline soon!

Or to 3.910. HG seems to employ their version numbers in a SemVer-ish way (SemVer exactly as intended doesn’t make that much sense in a video game , since you don’t have a public API…), but not following SemVer conventions (which would be 3.9.9 for the current version, and 3.9.10 for the next patch).

lol since they used letters etc in early 2.x versions, anything is possible.

Return to LEVIATHAN 3.91 and start reusing old numbers!? :face_with_peeking_eye: I never thought it would come to this…

No, not three-point-nine-one. Three-point-nine-ten.

hope I am wrong, but I am expecting a quiet couple few weeks, with mostly just stability fixes etc, while they finish up switch update etc. I was hoping we would get the x corridor options for freighter ( I know the auto version will still make them) and a fix for the batteries and solar powered variations when placed in rooms snapping to form part of the building…but I wonder if they are updating some of these and that’s why that aren’t fixing them.

It would be nice we are long over due for some more utility items, and I would like to see the remaining machines ( antimater, oxygen harvester, atmosphere harvester etc) get some wired connections for power, so no more micro managing, like how they updated for plants.

People are throwing around the idea that 4.0 (or another small update) will come before the switch release but… I’m a little skeptical. It really doesn’t sound smart on the marketing side, since advertising all (or most of) the new platform releases with “the big 4.0” makes a lot of sense and would help draw in new players.

Also the time frame b/w Polestar ending and the switch release is kinda small for any sort of smaller update in between.

0% chance (my opinion)
not gonna waste 4.0 on a small update. And not going to introduce 1 update and then another 2 weeks later. They will have enough bugs to deal with just getting 4.0 stable

@sheralmyst: Famous last words…

“Does that count as an emoji?”

Disco balls :mirror_ball: and/or gas giants :globe_with_meridians: confirmed.

I think we can safely rule that out. Release an update 2 weeks apart? No! Release an update 2+ months apart? Sure, and they’ve done that many times. Also, 3.99.1 and 4.01 hint 4.0 to be something special.

When does this expedition end? — Steam says “Jul 27, 6:17 AM - Sep 21, 6:30 AM CDT”, which is 4 weeks and 2 days from now, but in-game states “3 weeks remaining.” — Do expeditions end a little earlier than stated?

I’m looking forward to seeing what they have in store for us.

Oh yea the Steam Date is wrong afaik. The raw Epoch timestamp returned by the servers responds with Sunday, 11 September 2022 23:00:00 GMT as the end date.

Feels like déjà vu, seems like I got confused over the end date in some other expedition(s), but I forget. On one hand, “Such an easy fix, enter the date properly, done.” On the other hand, “I wonder if there’s something happening internally that’s causing this to occur?” The end date appears to be 10 days earlier than stated.

So, exactly 20 days from now the Polestar expedition will end, which is 1 day shy of 3 weeks left. Finally, 3 weeks and 5 days later, Switch ((and hopefully 4.0)) releases.

Question:

How big do you think this update will be?

Why do you so answer?

I think we’re going to get more content than what we get from the regular updates but not the largest.

The only reason why I think this is because last year’s next-gen update wasn’t as big as i’d hoped and thats likely because they had to spend quite a lot of time optimising the game for older consoles and the newer consoles. This year they are making NMS available for Switch AND iOS so I can imagine that the focus has been there.

However they might have had some things that have been cooking for awhile now even from beyond last year so it could release this year for 4.0

Just a guess of course.

Myself.
I expected 1 big overhaul to 1-2 aspect of the game.

  1. Gonna say Story
  2. Stations or Additional Base/Freighter improvements

Some visual upgrades, and engine improvements for Switch & VR but also Fidelity etc
Updates to Save System
Some new appearance modifiers
Optimizations for switch and some progress on server talk
I think it will be a lot of small things.

Keep in Mind…Station overrides are meant for something and cores have featured in a lot of update notes etc, we have seen hints of environments glitching out to change the planets environment and flora.

So honestly its anyone’s guess with Sean.
