Future Update Speculation

It’s eventually going to all be one company like in that kids movie Wall-e. (BUY & LARGE)
Cars, boats, subscriptions, groceries, apartments, games, robotic pet goldfish, hover-limosines, all purchased through one global network company.
Yay! :unamused:

You know the longer this goes on the more I am worried they will release after Starfield. Forgetting for a moment I was convinced a small update would have dropped by now, Its odd to say the least that 7th year went without Sean posting. If this was traditional Anniversary update excluding last year, I would expect hype. I’m still shocked we never got an expedition leading to it. So if Anniversary is part 3…that just feels off.

Quicksilver seems to be heading to a last week of August to finish up, we will get some kind of patch before or soon after then to fix the strings for the next batch of quicksilver…So lets say we get an update Sept 1. Ala Frontiers. Part 4 in Nov? I kinda doubt it.

Plus that close to Starfield? Suicide. Frankly I think anything within 30 days of Starfield would be horrible timing. Content wise. ARG might not be hurt too much.

I dunno I think any patterns at this point are out the window. We have had a year of mostly new platform updates. With a couple updates. And tech last content update was April. So…I kinda want something juicy to keep me motivated…

Myself I know I will check out Starfield…then Cyberpunk Expansion…and with my little available time that will more than keep me busy in September.

For a new release? Sure. For a free update? I mean, it will probably hurt your steam statistics a bit, but I don’t expect HG to be the type to care that much about that. They’ll release when they’re ready. Which probably they assumed they would be, but apparently, they are not yet. It’s a situation in which HGs tactic of “ambush releases” is paying off, IMHO. They can just keep working on the stuff until it works, without the internet throwing hissy-fits about moved release dates…

They’ve never bothered before. All of the recent updates and expeditions have been buggy as hell, and clearly suffered from inadequate testing.

The fact that they’re holding back this time suggests either really major problems, or that this time they really want it to work right. Using experimental to iron out the bugs won’t do.

Either of those possibilities suggests something unusual and engaging in the pipeline. My money’s on a grand finale, but who knows?

You and I clearly have a different picture of what hell looks like…

It feels a bit that way, but by HGs own announcements we’re expecting part 3 of a 4-parter, if I didn’t miscount. So it would seem premature for a finale.

I agree. But I think that’s where we’re heading. By my reckoning, there’s one further installment of the story development to go, then 4 - 6 weeks later, the big conclusion, followed closely by the grand reveal of the new project (which would probably be timed for November / December).

As far as ARGs go, I don’t think they intended to tease an ARG - they said the last release would have “ARG-like clues” which is not the same thing at all. Having said that, I think they may have been surprised by just how much enthusiasm there was for a new ARG. Remember, at the end of Waking Titan, lots of people had become bored, and were actually asking for it to end.

It can’t have escaped Sean’s notice that this time around, people were jumping at the slightest hint of an ARG - but he can’t conjour an ARG out of nowhere. It takes time, planning, and organisation. Which, I must admit, makes me wonder about the delay. Have Hello Games noticed the potential support, and decided to really fund an ARG? Are they, as we speak, desperately trying to agree terms with Alice & Smith? Who knows.

It’s free, but remember almost every update is with a sudden sale. They count on new players buying the game. And if any potential player base are wrapped up in a AAA title…that may or may not live up to hype…to me it would be risky. Sure old players will play, or come back for the update later…but the trick is to pull in new people.

Exactly. I haven’t expected the next update to big, and to memory I think the only every late update we ever got was Desolation?. I mean they will likely rerun expeditions over holidays again. So I wouldn’t expect an update after Nov 15th (opinion) and I just dont see a BIG Part 4 dropping that late in the year, unless it just part four of the story and we head of to the next thing. But I feel like the game is approaching the end game…hope I am wrong.

For me, that depends on what comes after it. The new project could be something wonderful.

In any case, I don’t expect No Man’s Sky to end. I expect that it will just receive less attention than it currently does.

I’m going to support it day one, even if its not my thing, same reason I bought Last Camp Fire.

[I WANT RANT DELETED]

I just hope we get some kind of news soon. Even if its piss off to October lol

If they really want to end it on a bang, they’ll put it into maintenance mode, and release a suite of modding tools (scripting engine etc). If they do that, this is the kind of game that will never die (people still play, and mod, morrowind, a game over 20 years old, for crying out loud…). With no updates coming out every couple of months and decent tools, modding would probably take to the stars in no time…

My guess is that even when feature updates for No Man’s Sky end, they will continue bug fix updates until most are squashed.

@Dragonsire … Ditto. I plan to support whatever new game they release… even if it’s not my type of game. I can always transfer the Steam license to a relative.

It would be really nice if HG could somehow add the ability to access and re-run old Expeditions. It would benefit new gamers as well as serve as a diversion for the old ones.

I have… doubts. Purely going on my work experience as a software developer.

From what Sean Murray has said, the Hello Games studio seems to operate on fairly open and democratic principles, with staff allowed to work on ideas they like. More than once, he has stated this working method as being the source of the numerous NMS updates.

Against that, I suppose we should bear in mind that nobody else at Hello Games ever gets to speak to the public. We only ever hear one man’s opinion - and what the boss man wants us to think is going on does not necessarily reflect the experience of the people working there.

I’m just saying it’s not usual to fix a lot of (minor) bugs once a product is Sunset that you didn’t fix while it was actively developed…
