Future Update Speculation

That deserves 100 ! Thanks for the belly laugh. :joy:

Does this silent stretch seem eerily silent? Especially since the anniversary came and went with nothing being said? I mean, life happens…HG did post about a game that was releasing soon, by another dev, but that was all. :face_with_spiral_eyes: :scream:

Yes it does. I don’t normally count the days between updates but I have gotten used to a certain frequency.
Maybe they are working on something rather big & don’t want a messy release, as has happened previously when they push too quick.

For once I am glad nothing happened.

Had to deal with so much today. My miata’s hardtop was stolen last night at midnight. Whats worse is that it was a fastback top so its pretty rare to see these and very expensive and requires a lot of labor to make them fit. So it was devastating that my hardwork was taken in my sleep.

What’s even worse is that I hardly drive it since I started working from home. Its parked in a gated apartment complex where only the neighbors see it. So someone who lives here planned it, brought a variety of tools to unbolt the variety of bolt sizes(and broke one off) and stole it. They didn’t just steal an object from me. They stole my piece of mind too. Wont be able to sleep thinking that they are going to come back for the rest of the car :unamused:

Sorry for going off topic. But basically for once I am actually glad this update is lagging.

For years, the story of No Man’s Sky was expanding - seemingly with no obvious direction. The developers appeared to be adding material as the fancy took them, with no clear regard for whether it fitted the existing narrative, or not.

However, Greg Buchanan has said that his latest writing for NMS was tying up the threads of the story. I get the impression he’s hinting at some kind of conclusion. Maybe not a complete ending, but certainly drawing a line under progress so far.

I assume Hello Games intend to employ their No Man’s Sky audience as the launch vehicle for their new project. They have put enormous effort into becoming as international and platform inclusive as possible - they would have to be mad not to make use of that level of goodwill and free publicity.

If I were Sean Murray, I would want to launch my new project at a time when No Man’s Sky had run its natural course, but was still attracting a high level of interest. I think I would want to end the disparate storylines of NMS in a grand denoument, and follow that with the announcement of the new thing.

It’s amazing that we have free updates this many years into the games life. I am thankful for anything HG makes to add to that.

However, I also think that there is room for a NMS 2 (or similar ) in the future that takes this as a foundation , but has more in star system variety, detail and includes regional politics or stories. I would like to see the occasional city or ruin planet, or regional governments pop up each with their own unique backgrounds.

At the risk of repeating a comment I made in an earlier thread, Hello Games have been very successful in procedurally creating a near-infinite universe for us to explore.

Unfortunately, the problem with a near- infinite universe is that you then need near-infinite characters, situations, and narrative to fill it. You need story. You need an awful lot of story.

The story needs to be absorbing, engaging, and imaginative. It needs to stretch the player in some areas, puzzle them in some places, and satisfy them in others. To date, procedural generation can’t do this.

Very much yes.

I mean technically the last update was Interceptor. Singularity is not an update. So the question of do you see Mac Release as an update. Internally with the amount of work involved I am sure they do. But for existing player base, Interceptor was the last content update.

When singularity dropped, I expected Part 3 to be another Expedition with ARG elements, leading to Anniversary Update. Then my expectations changed. However after this week past without anything I am confused as hell.

And the closer we get to Starfield release the more confused I get.

I think Hello Games will not relish dipping twice into their No Man’s Sky game to produce NMS 2.

Sean has said that one factor in continued NMS enhancements is what strikes their developers’ interest. So I expect them to venture into new uncharted game waters.

I’d be perfectly happy if NMS went into maintenence mode after they flesh out lore and add whatever enhancements are currently planned.

And I look forward to their new game. Though if it’s a “shooter” or extreme survival type, I may just view trailers.

And we live in an era of the early access game…and NMS has experimental. I wonder if they would consider testers from among the loyal NMS players. Players who would give them honest feedback without all the ugliness of the early haters.

Oh, how heartbreaking! I sympathies like crazy! :`(

I don’t know. They don’t appear to test the updates they add to NMS - or if they do, it’s a pretty dismal failure, considering the number of bugs that get through, and the subsequent patches required.

Every game I have ever heard of that used play testers suffered from leaks. Somebody, somewhere, always gives the game away. Hello Games does not have leaks. Not only is there no official information being released, but the revelations and supposed “insider information” routinely touted on social media amount to nothing better than informed speculation. Hello Games’ current security is very effective.

I can only assume this is because any play testing is conducted strictly in-house, and under secure conditions. If they go to those lengths to protect insignificant minor updates, I can’t see them opening up the process in anticipation of a major new release.

lol, I can easily tell you this is false. I’ve play tested games with NDAs and had friends whose careers started as game testers, and although they happen, its not that common. In fact I had a buddy of mine test a game that never even was released, and to this day to the best of my knowledge I’ve never heard of it being talked about. Now major games with every eye on them people are more incentivized to leak…but average games nah.

And companies certainly reach out to people. Nowadays popular youtubers and twitch people will often know things most dont. Doesn’t mean they get hands on with those things, sometimes but not always. Journalist too as articles come out sometimes are approved weeks ahead. But any company worth its salt is going to be cautious.

But we have all fell for leaks over the years, I’ve been burned a couple times…now I try to be super cautious if I hear anything because you don’t want to burn people, or look stupid if it falls flat. As 90 % of the time shit shared on Discord etc is guess work at best.

Years back during my modding days, I had confidential EA files / documents on the inner workings of the Sims 3, got to look at some early no longer functional tools, knew months in advance some of the DLC that was coming out…never said a word, never seen the info leak publicly.

There will be tons of people who know things who will never leak things for No Man’s Sky…as they shouldn’t.

For once I’m kind of glad there’s nothing new yet, gives me more time to spend in Baldurs Gate <3

Some time between finishing BG3 and starting Starfield would be lovely, cheers HG XD

I’m still on the fence over Starfield…Bethesda and I…haven’t always seen eye to eye on quality. Now there is a studio that has bugs and tons of testers…

But given the hype and release close to or within 30 days after release would not …in my opinion be smart.

I expect mainline bethesda to be a broken mess, I somehow endured Skyrim on ps3. I give them a pass because they’re big and complex games, delivering one that isnt broken without expanding outside of QA into the public is almost unheard of if not near impossible.

I avoided fallout 76 soon as it was announced because I dont do “games as a service” games and for me other people would ruin the immersion of a traditional bethesda game, so I side stepped that one, thus not leaving me with the insane anger that ramped up in everyone who got conned there.

What they delivered with FO76 and how they responded was worse than any launch day bugs any of their games had prior. Felt like they’d finally gone full EA/Activision on us. It more or less started the todd howards a liar meme because so much of it fell on its arse all the way up to pre-order collectible items. People now attribute buggy game releases to part of his lies but i dont see them being one in the same.

I got the impression nobody at bethesda wnated to do fallout 76, it was an order from on high because they saw dollar signs in all those other always online multiplayer hubs, part of me feels a little bad for todd howard in this instance because for me thats a nightmare sold my soul scenario. I dont trust the guy as far as I can throw him though, he defintiely has both feet in the corpo jacuzzi now. But his team I’m sure will deliver something memorable

Presently I’m willing to give starfield a go, no expectations for it, wasnt even on my radar until I remembered its the reason we arent getting ES6 any time soon XD so either way not going to come away upset.

While we’re on the subject, just a side note, went in to town today to meet a friend for lunch, didnt realise Comic Con 2023 was on and ended up sitting next to a table of Vault Dwellers and Solid Snake XD

That’s almost certainly what happened. No sane developer would have wanted to shoehorn massive multiplayer into that engine…

I think the premise for Fallout 76 was certainly a good one…on paper.

Monetization and built on that engine well…that was a bad combo. I still have a copy of the game unopened. I just never got inclined to give it a go.

I can see unopened physical copies of that game becoming a rare oddity that fetches a nice price in a few decades.

"Look at this incredible artefact of capitalism gone wrong at it’s finest, you can’t even play it anymore, the servers are gone since microsoft shut down bethesda after delivering one game, as is their M.O. "

Okay I don’t think it’s their M.O anymore, that was their playbook for the last two gens, but I couldnt resist the idea that they would do that to bethesda too XD I’m just bitter over Ensemble Studios </3

I call it hostile recruiting… Buy a company that has know-how in a certain area you want, close the company, offer continued employment to key personnel.
