The way the power lines are rendered has changed. They are no longer lit up and glowing bright blue. They now have a softer pulsing blue effect. Or did that change happen before now…
Another update
Yeah, 1.1 Gb this time.
They’re really fooling around with something.
It’s 11.30 p.m. here in England. Hello Games pulling an all-nighter?
In the latest experimental they’ve added references to something called “The Forge”. From a quick Google search I did, it looks like a crossplatform rendering library for their engine. That, and the new names for the PAKs makes it look like HG might be making some heavy changes to the engine in the back.
Huh… a middleware framework for building graphic engines. I didn’t know such a thing existed, but now that I do it makes a lot of sense.
This potentially means that tey’re switching out the entire rendering layer in the pipeline. ProcGen should be completely untouched by this, and shaders are probably mostly portable. Still sounds like an awful lot of work migrating an existing project with lots of legacy code…
As previously observed, it makes more sense if it’s (at least in part), a field test for techniques to be used elsewhere.
I think that’s what’s going on with all the platforms, too. Hello Games are not going to make a bundle by launching NMS on the Mac at this stage - but they’re building knowledge and experience of cross-platform systems.
I suspect that when the new title launches, it will be available on all commercially viable platforms, all at the same time - and Hello Games are currently building and testing the skills to achieve that.
Especially not since if you own the game on PC, you get it on Mac for free…
I am sure that has got something to do with it (I’d expect them to use the same engine), but putting in this amount of effort to port an already mature project to an entirely new framework also signals strong intent to keep maintaining NMS for quite some time to come.
In fact, I could well imagine that they rebuilt the engine for their new project (which would be much easier) and then, once it reached enough maturity, decided to rebase NMS onto it…
Is that why my cape has a fancy new mesh so it kinda widens at the bottom when the wind blows and also goes in a single direction when planetside during storms.
It’s also super bugged out though and cape stays blowing in one direction until you leave planet after the storm.
Someone also pointed out with the new cape mesh and its bugginess, you can turn quickly and make it in to a poncho.
Not sure how new cape mesh pairs with FIdelityFX artifacting the cape has been giving some players, but I’d say its gotten even worse for them '
They have been active with The Forge for quite some time now.

Emoji Meaning
A human brain, shown in pink on most platforms. Used to indicate thinking or the human mind.
(Probably not the TikTok alternative.)
Hive mind?
A brain teaser …
Puzzles, especially for me.
It’s a very, very, small brain.
My Update Prediction
Sentience:
Given there has been some data-mined-fueled chat of ‘robot bits’ my thoughts are that there may be the introduction of a new being/intelligence/sentience that we may need to build or rescue as part of the ‘Crucible’ expedition/update.
Pink brain = corrupted intelligence
Thanks for remind me that Futurama is coming back loved that show.
