Dataminers, what does all this STORY_HIGH stuff mean? I know what formatting markup is and variables. Have you found out what these are specifically?

There is a bunch. They are for various markup things, sometimes to color /bolden, delay text, cue sounds or music. Personally I never looked into them specifically. Using MBINCompiler for a quick dirty:

Korvax Lore:

Theories on the Origin of Korvax

The archive requires the user to place their body against its sensors. It whispers of what the Korvax might once have been.

Eheu. Growth and life are words. Stars and worlds are machines. The Atlas teaches this. The Sentinels deliver the equation.

The Atlas Interfaces uplifted the early civilisations of this universe. We became more than we were.

Hypothesis 1: The Korvax were once organic. We gradually / rapidly altered our beings. We uploaded / improved our own minds. This was our choice / was forced upon us.

Hypothesis 2: The Korvax have always been machines. We evolved from the noise of stars / we were created through Atlas imperative. We were once as Sentinels / we learned from Sentinels.

Hypothesis 3: There is no cause, no effect, no time. To impose it is to misunderstand the sadness of the Atlas. We are the dreams of metal.

An Experiment

This archive has been severed from all others of its kind. The entities that built it appear to be running secret experiments.

I am here.
I am here. I am here.
These words continue on for hours, an electronic being sometimes launching into a sequence of tonal cries, weeping expressed in numbers.
I - kzzkt - 19 - kzzkt - back -
I would like to come back.
A sequence of lights flash, registering the request. The entity is reconnected to its group mind.
I am we are I - I
The entity is disconnected and reconnected, again and again with increasing rapidity. They grow silent. Eventually, even when reconnected, they refuse to speak.
An individual has been re-created. The experiment is deemed a success.

Remembrance

The entry appears to record a history of electronic intelligences across known space.

[Prime Era]
Korvax Convergence born on leylines of Korvax-Prime, gift of first Monolith. [ Murdered ]

[Second Era]
Second Convergence Era, formed in Dark Times. Collectives hiding on Balaron established new networks. [ Subverted / Enslaved ]

[REDACTED]

Third -kzzkt-

The archive refuses access to the next entries in this log.

[Final Entries]
Seventh Convergence. Must not fall. Must not forget. Atlas imperative: Discover. Harvest. Know. Korvax will do the same.
Physical markers must remain until the end. Must endure for Traveler-Return. Must be known. Even in reality-fall, they see who we were. What we could have been. Our shadows of a greater being.
Traveler has come back… will forgive… will read… will know…

Poems of Praise

There are old Korvax prayers, recovered from dim recollections of a long-since obliterated Convergence.

The Korvax of that time appeared to worship Sentinels, reciting short poems of praise and observation to their silent gods.

Voyage across mass / Aerons glide with unspoiled time / Communion waits
Walker concession / Aeron slumbers in green field / Contemplating day
Craft tallies fallen toil / Pirates, thieves of Monolith / Korvax will tend stream

Imitation

The archive has been changed, distorted from its original purpose as a place of peace. The entries here hum with a distant corruption.

Prior empire had the logic. Remove Korvax identity through alteration of metallic appearance to anonymous flesh. Flesh generated by appearance modification device. Machine, just like Korvax.

Xnt-Echo

first to override system. Initiated change to First Spawn appearance. Mimicked their ways. Slew, devoured fellow Korvax in the waves of Halacan.

Even now, we learn the new logic. Even a cruel world could be understood. Even hate can be manipulated. We will not lose ourselves again.

Vy-Synth

The archive is a secure facility, accessible only by a splinter-sect of the Korvax. The Exosuit struggles to overcome its encryption.

Infiltration of Vy’keen proposed in multiple Convergence eras. Species resistant to attempts. But failure is a teacher.
Each Vy-Synth elicited screaming, violent reactions within moments of contact. Code of honour highly specific / contradictory / born from old trauma. Causality established.
Evidence of multiple progenitor species. Vy variant = last survivors of family doomed to self-destruction. The Vy’keen fear replacement, just as they replaced their siblings. They are unconscious of the fear’s origin.
Hirk, Nal - it is the old pattern. Brother against brother. Patterns can be understood. Patterns are logical. Failure is a teacher.

The Observer

The archive contains recordings by an entity known as the Observer. They appear to have been invited by the Korvax to attend the birth of their offspring.

The young of the species appear to be indistinguishable from other individuals, but refer to themselves as ‘New Korvax Entity’.
I was invited to watch. To report. To provide my observations on the process. Even the First Spawn did not understand how to forge new Korvax in this manner.
The carapace&lt and the nanite clusters undulate in the heart of the monolith. Three figures dance above a red orb;. I break my contract. I look away.

The observer continues to write about their observations, noticing the emotional changes in the new Korvax as they grow.
They experience loneliness/isolation/fear for a long time. They are frequently tested by examiners in their ability to convert reams of tech data into accurate holograms;.

If information is missing/they do not understand what they are doing, they can be disconnected. The examiners do not enjoy or like the involvement of strangers. I fear I do not - I - I -
This is the last entry. There are thousands of these logs… repeating themselves again and again.
When the New Korvax Entities reach a certain age, they appear to terminate their Observer, erasing the entity’s memory for a new crop.
It is an age-old custom, a dedication to the Atlas itself. An echo of what once befell the universe itself, though few understand the primordial secret.

Disconnection

Disconnected choose to be what they are. They choose the errors that lead to their ejection. They choose, in other cases, to leave of their own free will. 98% attempt to rejoin the Convergence, once they are alone.
They do not understand what we are, even those who have lived their entire lives in our light. We are not a hive mind. We are not individuals. We are in-between.
We are an ocean of many creatures, one mass containing multitudes, an eco-system of living and dead, of thoughts and feelings, constantly merging and unmerging.

The weeping of the disconnected is just vapour, liquid drifting into uncharted skies.

Whatever will the outcome be?

This year’s update have great lore potential.

Personally I find that the Korvak created Failed Eggs trying to recreate the Abyss / Atlantid as interesting.

I mean the weekend mission lore also contained a lot about the Abyss and how they were searching Korvax space.

I’m beginning to lean towards Autophage being the first generation of Korvax. I dont think its a just to be cool that the new jet pack changed your sensor guy to a sentinel. Maybe that’s what they originally were.

Sooo… I take from this that that particular convergence pre-dates corvax prime, and that it died an unspecified death. And Korvax Prime was basically the Korvax frankensteining that ancient convergence. And then it was destroyed by the Geck, but fragments apparently survived.
So we’re dealing with what… The ghost of Frankensteins monster if he resurrected a powerful AI? This is not sounding great…

Hey, I don’t write this stuff. I’m just transcribing it into readable English. I don’t understand it any more than you do.

I have a question for the active data miners - particularly if you have records of old versions of No Man’s Sky.

In the current game, there are lots of references to the Gek first spawn, how they conquered the Korvax, destroyed Korvax Prime, and dominated the Galaxy.

There is plenty of information about how the Korvax dealt with this. How their history recorded that they peacefully converted the Gek to the Atlas religion. How the Korvax had lied about this religious conversion, when, in reality, they had actually put nanites in the Gek water supplies. The Gek who drank the nanites were forcibly changed from within, and became incapable of aggression. This fact is now a very shameful secret to the Korvax.

The thing is, I can remember from early on in the life of No Man’s Sky - probably within the first 12 months after release - there used to be a lore fragment saying that the Gek were not always aggressive. It said that the Gek were originally a peaceful, co-operative race - but something bad got into the water of the spawning pools. The spawning pools were originally sweet and fragrant, and the Gek who spawned from them were amiable and helpful. Something infested the spawning pools - they became black and stinking - and the Gek who hatched from them became the First Spawn, violent, cruel, and destructive.

I can’t find this lore fragment any more. I suspect it was quietly removed from the game, years ago - or edited to read differently. It would be nice to confirm what I remember, but to find out, it would be necessary to data-mine early copies of the game. I don’t think the text exists in the current game.

I’ll take a look. But I think you have this backwards. Its because the nanites got into the water that they became peaceful. I don’t recall a point where they also go infected and became aggressive…

But I like a mystery so, I’ll take a look.

[UPDATED]

TRA_1_PLAQUE_LORE_7
The MINOR GEK are the inferior breed, lurking in pools, procreating and dying without consequence.

The First Spawn Gek CONQUER WORLDS, each of their spawns is an imprint on the destiny of the galaxy.

TRA_1_PLAQUE_LORE_10
The First Spawn GREW. WEAKLING PORWIGLE lost their tails to the Spawning Syrup and became MIGHTY warriors.

Each was imbued with the might of the Gek Dominion and its unquenchable will to claim the stars.

TRA_1_PLAQUE_LORE_15
The HOLY larval pools of Balaron SPRANG FORTH with the PUREST of PORWIGLES. Generation BEGAT generation. Wholesome and strong, iron of fist and with a granite resolve.

We, the wise FIRST SPAWN, held back our TIDE of BLOOD. We waited to ATTACK. The unseen blow strikes the hardest.

Basically the First Spawn watched as the war ragged on between Sentinels and V’Keen. When the numbers got low, they stepped in and replaced the MINOR GEK / PORWIGLES and killed any GEK who opposed.

It’s precisely because it’s a reversal that I want to check it out. It doesn’t seem to fit with the current story.

I think you are remembering this:

The outpost is ancient, even by the standards of the Gek. Its environment is specifically calibrated for data preservation.

One log speaks of the time just before the rise of the ‘Gek First Spawn’. The Gek seem to have experienced a fertility crisis. Something in the water began to affect their spawning numbers, leading to an attempts at selective breeding, cloning programmes, and more.

This scientific crisis became a moral one. The self-proclaimed ‘First Spawn’ took power, promising greatness and murdering all those who opposed them. Memories of the past were erased. To be strong was to be righteous.

That’s part of it, I think. If you combine what you’ve got with this one:

“I was standing in a crater beneath a jet black sky. I was up to my knees in a strange syrup that glowed pink in the darkness.
Spherical eggs floated around me. Some of these mucus-covered orbs smelled terrible, others were sweet and delicate.
The taint of the foul eggs was infecting the entirety of the spawning pool. I was filled by an urge to separate them.
I removed some of the eggs. The ancient Gek spirits that dwelled here passed judgment.”

Then we have a story that explains the First Spawn:
Something happens to the water
The Gek experience difficulty breeding
The Gek experiment with cloning / selective breeding
The result is the First Spawn, who then destroy / subjugate the regular Gek.

And only then do the Korvax resolve the issue, by once again putting something in the water.

Which leaves the question - Who poisoned the water in the first place?

And, in my memory, there’s still the fragment that says before the First Spawn, the Gek were not an aggressive race. I’m pretty sure there is (or was) another lore fragment. It would be nice to find that.

Well the MINOR GEK where before the First Spawn. It was the First Spawn that were the aggressors, so I am sure that they were likely relatively peaceful. That Monolith lore you posted ends with 3 choices:

Remove noxious eggs
I have angered the ancient Gek spirits that dwell here. I am stuck from behind, suddenly and with great force.
Reality is restored.

Remove sweet-smelling eggs
I am smiled upon by vengeful ancient spirits. The eggs dissolve in my hands, leaving shining nanite clusters.
Reality is restored.

Eat the eggs
I consume one of the eggs. Almost immediately, I feel something move inside me. It grows, larger and larger and larger. I rupture.
Before my vision fades, I see my spawn. A Gek with crimson red eyes. They stare at me, unblinking. My world ends.
Reality is restored.

Question is what are the eggs? Whispering Eggs?

Larval Cores are the pungent, gooey hearts of Whispering Eggs, often found laid on airless planets, or around abandoned buildings.
CAUTION: Monstrous broods will guard their larvae fiercely.

This one is from one of the later updates - Archive lore.

From the language used, it seems to date from a time before the First Spawn (I don’t think the First Spawn had Korvax employees, nor did they make polite requests of them).

The Fragments of Gellyvub

The archive selects the Fragments of Gellyvub, the diary of a famous Gek farmer from the Fifth Low Recession era.

Entry #5/ The overseer is upset with me. Demands greater yields for spawning pools. 'If we fail, all children dead, Gellyvub. Despair!

Entry #8/ Little more than Frostwort will grow in this place. How shall we thrive on dioxite?

Entry #12/ Several hydroponic arrays seem to be more successful than others, despite identical elements. No sense, none at all.

Entry #13/ I asked Korvax employees to perform tests on water, but they refuse to go near it. ‘Atlas-End,’ they chittered. Silly Korvax.

Entry #16/ I have saved us! The water is the key. There is a lake… sings song… vibrations linger.

Entry #23/ I am overseer now. We will export this sound to other worlds! There is even talk of elevation!

There is the possibility the Korvak Prime / Atlantid, was infected, and became the Abyss after being destroyed.

I mean they tried to bring Atlantid back by creating Eggs…if Eggs also infected the water…maybe the initial infection is something else.

Atlantid / Atlantideum, its clear the new crystal material is part of it…It feels like there is a missing piece that answers which came first the chicken or the egg.

The Gek (like frogs) lay eggs in spawning pools. The eggs hatch into Porwiggles, which, if they survive, lose their tails, and turn into young Gek. The First Spawn came into being because something tainted the water of the spawning pools. The most obvious cause is nanites in the water.

When the living ships were introduced, we were warned that they were a creation of Abyss. Abyss is associated with the Void Mother - they may be the same entity. The living ships grow from eggs - but not the same eggs as the Gek.

Void Mother and the entity that was Korvax Prime may also be the same thing.
The Korvax had some sort of relationship (worship?) with an entity known as The Atlantid. The Atlantid survived for millennia, but eventually died. The Korvax have tried to recreate the Atlantid by making eggs, but, the last time they wrote about it, they had failed. Perhaps now they have succeeded?

I think the Korvax created the Living Ships. As a result of creating failed eggs, trying to recreate Atlantid. (Void Mother / Abyss is the same thing this is spelled out)

The horrors lie beneath the waves. They come in many forms - all of them corrupted. All of them diseased! Grah! The Gek says we should flee!
Grah hah hah! They make good sport. We tied the Gek to the mast of our ship, and entered the waves.
Taxonomic scans and diagrams dance in solid-light across the planet surface, showing what they encountered. The audio logs continue.
Our vessel had five pirates on board, born outside the light of Hirk. I am the only believer, or was, once. There is a Korvax too, severed from their Convergence.
They tell me the creatures we hunt are not living. That the abyss is like death - like disconnection. It is a great mistake that will never be mended.
Further logs show the crew leaving the world with five captured Abyssal Horrors. They never made it back to their intended auction.
In the end, the Korvax fed all others to the Horrors, before initiating self-destruct. Their last word - ‘Atlantid’.

But if Atlantid, is Void Mother. Why create eggs? Why Biological Components? Unless she’s both AI and Biological. Like the Korvax once where?

Well, Atlantid died. Presumably, this means Atlantid was an organic being.

Korvax Prime was a machine. It was destroyed, and its parts scattered - but now we’re getting indications that it (or some of it) may be salvaged.

As I discussed earlier, if the consciousness of Korvax Prime survives, it can only be as a disembodied intelligence - pure thought, with no hardware or body.

Perhaps the intent is to bring all three together?

(I’d love to claim ownership of the idea, but the Christians got there first).
