Looking at it, @DevilinPixy in post #152 has my vote so far, I’m thinking maybe wait on NEXT to drop as it is true the Xbox might bring a whole new perspective for things to add on but thus far, I like this one the most. Not to play favorites, they all have definitely went to the above and beyond levels!
Thanks for posting these polls! They 're really helpful
…pass the nip nip round the left hand side…
Whoa FREAKY!!! Austin Powers in SPaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaCE! That’s amazing. You’re very clever! That’ll be fun to play with. I can’t thank you enough, I never expected you to do that so quickly!! I hope anyone else can play with this too in a logo idea, not just me and you.
Anyone can post some logo ideas don’t forget! Pencil drawings too! The more the merrier at least while we wait for NEXT to clear up any uncertainty.
Any of these logos would be cool to custom add to our No Man Sky ships and freighters or on flags Hello Games please take note. Maybe the ability for customisation of badge sticker in game could be a reward for travelling 256 galaxies or home bases or something.
Naming conventions mean nothing to me when I play games. I am sorry for those who require “neat & tidy” rules or it sets off their frustration. A name is a name, the more obscure and convoluted they are, especially if it involves some lore/history that came before, it becomes memorable to all.
I’ve been naming the planetary systems I find… “GET OFF MY LAWN”, “MINE!”, “Dolnor’s Do-Re-Me”, etc. I would much rather someone stumbles on my planets and chuckle than needing an exacting regimented name.
I feel the same about ECSD/CSDE. If it is convoluted and makes Absolutely No Sense, people will remember it. If it is Exacting and Perfectly Logical, the name will disappear into the background of all the other names of Hubs that will be popping up after NEXT updates.
BTW: ETARC spelled backwards is CRATE…much like the bottled water EVIAN spelled backwards is NAIVE. LOL

Here’s my favourite if anyone cared (@Mad-Hatter and @DevilinPixy):

There’s no need to be apologetic. You’ve muddled the aim here to decide on a logo for an already named part of ‘space’ with the naming of planets. But clearly you do care else you wouldn’t name anything at all. I hope no one feels they have to name anything one particular way or another.
As far as I understand the initial idea of creating a galactic hub was for players of No Man’s Sky to find a way of ‘making friends’ in a non multiplayer environment if they wish and explore the galaxy on adventures together or individually. Something to give a sense of focus to a random vast universe. In so doing they can record and share ‘finds’ and have a laugh and make a bit of space gaming history.
Naming anything in the game is a bit like a Youtube channel name. Eventually though everyone shouts out their name more wildly and then realise they have lost their voice. It can be fun to be functional too to create one’s own bit of science fiction or start a more conventional YOuTube channel. If it turns out to be interesting people will join in whatever name is presented to them and importantly may want to return and contribute.
Making sense of the vast space is an impossible task (in fact why bother at all?) so having a familiar named Hub helps anchor that adventure to something memorable to which players can choose to belong or not. If it helps enjoy playing a game in a particular way, then fine. If not, that’s okay too. It will always be there to visit and importantly grow to become a trusted source of information about the game, maybe even fitting seamlessly into the No Man’s Sky / ARG story.
The intial name for the hub was linked to the ARG last year. And it could well have been named ‘Space Hub Blob’ or ‘Get Off My Lawn’ but that doesn’t really run with the ball. It’s nice to discover those fun locations and equally fun perhaps to buzz around in more ‘conventional space’ not only a Douglas Adam’s whacky universe.
I’m happy in either universe personally and you’re welcom e to find my planet ‘Arthur Dent’s Picnic’ or search for the beast ‘King @Polyphemus’ on Edison ECSD or maybe find the lovely system ‘Strawberry Caverns’ (or at least it was until Hello Games blew up the universe in one update). I wish I could find them again myself. but have recently left ‘Vogon Poetica’ where I left a trail of vogon poetry named creatures…
Perhaps one day I will return home again from the dark depths of my Galaxy hopping. Maybe by then the ETARC Citizen Science Division will be an ‘Evil Imperial Empire’ refusing to fund a badly needed new spaceship for me (the lonely space adventurer) leaving me forced by Pirates to seek out the mercenary Dolnor bouncing on his space hopper, in his kingdom of ‘GET OFF MY LAWN’.
It will be a fun journey ahead I think when NEXT update lands and whoever I encounter. And I shall definitely be purchasing a Lawn Mower with Warp Drive at the next Hub I visit.
Just like Trump.
If a thread goes on long enough.
I’m away for a few days to take care of some family issues, and then dag yo, this thread Asploded!
(that’s good, means we care)
I’ve absorbed the discussion above and will be refining my designs to reflect the consensus. Really great discussion here! Creating a visual identity we can all feel ownership of is no small task, but its worthwhile.
We are right there, just needs a little tinkering to get all the elements to work together.
If I haven’t posted some new hotness by weekend’s end, start throwing things at me.
Thought about tagging you mid asplosion but didn’t want to be a bother. Or maybe I did tag you and I’m only remembering my indecision to do so and not the actual outcome
Progress…
Wanted to try a meaningful outside shape of the mark, so here we have a 16 sided shape (not sure what those are called off the top of my head) with an 8 sided octagon within. The combination makes for a pretty cool border for our mark.
I love the stylized stars that @johnnycloud made, so I worked with that shape for the star-chain. There are, of course, 16 stars depicted in the chain.
I’m not 100% on the type solution. Still would like to try getting “Citizen Science Division” in there, and would like to integrate the text a bit more.
Will tinker more and post progress as it comes along.
Cheers!
How about a 12 sided shape inside a 16 sided one to represent address, just a thought.
Yay you’re back! I did a little poll and it has confirmed the text to use is ETARC and the words ‘Citizen Science Division’ in full. Words can be designed to fit in any way you think best, with greater emphasis/bias for ETARC.
Is anybody else ready for a vote?
This thread has been going for 11 months now, and we’re no closer to a decision now than we were then. I apologize if I’m “stifling the creative process”, but it’s about time we got to a decision here.
We have 11 days before NEXT drops. How about we spend the next 3 putting together some candidates/favorites, put up a poll for 7 and then we can announce the winner the day before NEXT.
I like everything about this one but not really a fan of the stars. Maybe glyphs or ??? .
@Xion4012 yes I agree completely.
Here’s what I propose we do:
(1) we decide on a group of people that are “in charge” for the logo-decision
(2) we make a poll on a shortlist of 5 of the logo submissions made so far
(3) voila, the popular vote decides
I volunteer to be part of the group of people to manage the process, but we’d need like 2-3 more people in order for this not to be a one-person thing?
I could also do this entirely by myself, in which case I might include more options as for eligible logos.
If voting starts on Monday we can have a logo for us by the end of next week!
From my understanding a group have already assembled and are preparing a poll of all the best submissions that fit the criteria we voted on months back.
I suspect it will be up by Monday the latest and the intention is to have the final product presented just days before NEXT hits.
Personally I believe we already have a logo in terms of its symbols, Star chain, portal, glyphs, etarc. Once it has those signifiers, no matter what form it takes it will speak ETARC to me. What we don’t have is an official, set and finalised, visual representation of our logo/emblem/whatever.
That’s why, while I’m all for us having an official logo to use on official statements etc, I am also very much liking the idea that if you so please, you can make your own logo or choose one you like to use for yourself personally, once it has those key signifiers, people who know, will know it’s etarc.
Ok then! I wasn’t aware of this work already being done. I look forward to the poll coming soon then! It’s going to be exciting for sure!
