Archaeological Digs

After spending more time with Origins…

Birthplace of an Archaeologist

I agree with you, the only thing that changes is their title, value and result. And while I also agree that they’re not worth cataloguing, unless studying their aforementioned subtilties, it is for that very reason that I’m not even sure if they warrant their own thread. However, some of these new items may in fact be of some level of interest, but it is also hard to say, specifically the ‘Fragments of Discovery Data.’

Nonetheless, I believe your adding Metal Detector Enthusiasts in the intro, or basically just something along those lines, is probably the best bet. This way they do at least have a home, and you’re well prepared, just in case Hello Games drops a ‘mindblown’ with added stories, and more items, or idk.

Those stories could be more like, the old tire you pull from the water, and then repurpose to a flower pot. Of which is later melted down for its metals and rubbers, so as to be repurposed and sold in a later iteration…

Only to never learn… that it was actually the one and only missing tire, from an elite collection of only four ever made, which pulled our great Hirk from the battle lines, rewriting history as we know it, and… NOTICE: 1 billion units, if it can be found. And the ‘living flesh?’ Yeah, that was from Hirk, too! :astonished:

In other words, all they had to do was add a procedural story, and then they’d have merit. What makes the ‘relics’ so special, like lost artifacts, historical documents and unearthed treasure, as well as fossil samples and excavated bones, is that they also include a unique story and a unique date, adding value.

After all, one could reason…

Formula to Archaeology

Story + Date = Merit

Procedural Story + Procedural Date = Historical Merit

I collected a bunch of these items.

Here’s some of the results to my research:

Summary

Wow…

  1. “Is this where living ships are born?” :egg:
  2. “Can you spot the falling star?” :comet:
  3. Are these tiny bubbles on a lush planet? :left_speech_bubble:

As of Origins… It’s interesting the sights you see while digging…

And to think… This was my somewhat home prior to Origins. My planet is now called “The Nest”… and I think we both know, “Why?” — Or, perhaps I should now feel more at home, closer to my ‘Origins.’ :egg:

:owl:

Now, let’s dig up some of those infamous, “Scraps of Organic Matter.”

However, I can’t seem to find any here. So for that, it seems I’ll have to search elsewhere…

Okay, maybe not here. I can’t seem to find next to anything here. Moving on…

A toxic waste dump? — Sure thing, we’ll try it…

“Subterranean Organic Structure”

“Well, now… I, uh… fancy name, you got there!”

Yeah… ‘High Sentinel’ planet… Toxic Storm kicked in… But all unrelated…

Sorry… hopped in my ship, but this one released ‘Cyto-Phospate’… as can be seen.

Upon using the mining laser, it bursts open and here’s one of the pieces of it…

Yeah, kinda slimy… And that smell? - Yeah, Hello Games need to add showers!

Yeah, I hope they add bathrooms, too. Cause I’ve been holding it for 4 years.

But, yeah… I guess that’s all unrelated… And, here’s what I got from this one…

“Good mercy! - This ‘rotting planet’ and its ‘pouring toxic rain’, when will it stop!”

Okay, one more… Maybe it’ll be something different, this time…

Okay, I’m done…

But wait, I just found ‘two for one’ !

So yeah, it was ‘Carbon,’ after processing the protein, and the Cache resulted ‘70 Nanites.’

Originally, which was early Origins, I had suggested renaming this thread ‘Archaeology’, so as to put less emphasis on the digging and more on the cultural exchange, but I only made that suggestion in view of the new items and what appeared to be numerous means of attaining these. And while ‘Archaeological Vault’ does certainly work as well, ‘Archaeological Digs’ does put more emphasis on their primary…

‘Origins.’ :pick::wink:

However, this trip also took me back to my origins, because when I 1st birthed to life as a Traveller, oh so many years ago, I did so on a ‘Rotting Planet’… and wished to leave then, just as much as this time, as well.

Regardless though, not all toxic damage is of waste…

In the end, I bagged some bones, nabbed some nanites and stashed some substances. Excavated Bones: $1,858,580. — So, let’s find a Colossal Building, do a cultural exchange, and increase our profits… But wait!.. Celestial Archive only accepts ‘Fossil Samples’ — No ‘Excavated Bones’ — But, “Why!?”

Oh well… Story in the life of a ‘Procedural Archaeologist,’ perhaps.

Guess I’ll have to seek some ruins.

My reason for the name Archaeological Digs is because of my history in archaeology. Having been on digs, the focus is on piecing together the past which, in light of the new lore from the Celestial Archives, does seem to be the direction we are heading in.
Seems like they really packed a lot of new stuff in Origins.
hairy flowers
glassy thorax
precious statuettes dormant wheatberry
A change came with the 01/10 3xp patch, I can access the Archive Exchange only once now. Not sure if there is a timer…but at least it is fixed and can once again be used. And there are at least 2 exchanges at each Archive.

Sheralmyst: So… Fresh, 1036 year old skulls that sprout and grow more skulls. … … Yup. Happens all the time!

Are not excavated bones a subset of fossil samples?

Here again, it seems the criteria is that it accepts items found at Ancient Ruins. Perhaps the idea is that Excavated Bones are not old enough to have become fossilized. The bones found at Ancient Ruins are fossils. There was a discussion about this way back when the ruins were introduced. We decided then to accept the bones even though they are not fossils. ( though the description on some states ancient…)
So I am feeling better about the Metal Detector Enthusiast idea because the bones and recovered items are not old enough to qualify as Ancient or valuable(some bones have decent value) but they are still interesting enough to dig up.
It is all very confusing.

I have updated the Google Sheet and made the following changes:

With all the ‘new’ results posted it is obvious that the ‘Recovered Items’ and ‘Valuable Rock Samples’ behave different, both resulting in a ‘break down’ to resources, items, or nanites. The pre-Origins categories all have a Units value instead, although some of the categories as listed by @sheralmyst in the top post, can now also be exchanged at an Artifact Exchange Vault.

Due to the difference for the two new categories, I decided to move them into a separate tab, located at the bottom, in the same Sheet of the Google doc. The two tabs are now as follows:

Atlas-65 Archaeological Society

Note: Changed back to the below categories we used to track.

  • Ancient Skeleton
  • Aquatic Treasure
  • Biological Sample *
  • Delicate Flora
  • Excavated Bones
  • Fossil Sample *
  • Historical Document *
  • Lost Artifact *
  • Salvaged Scrap
  • Terrifying Sample
  • Unearthed Treasure *

* Can be exchanged at an Artifact Exchange Vault

Metal Detector Enthusiasts

Note: Added a new column for those who include their finds with the ‘break down’ results.

  • Recovered Items
  • Valuable Rock Samples

Edit: Included new categories found to allow exchange at an Artifact Exchange Vault

Refinements for Consideration :writing_hand:

@sheralmyst gets one set of options. @Crimsontine gets another. More research is needed.

From @Crimsontine: Here’s the options available to me…

Correction…

@sheralmyst, you may have to edit your opening post, as more options are found.

Consider…

  • Historical Document
  • Fossil Sample
  • Biological Sample

Reference…

Correction…

@DevilinPixy, you may have to edit your Google Doc as more options are found.

Perhaps also… Add more asterisks as more options are found…

Consider…

  • Historical Document ꙳
  • Fossil Sample ꙳
  • Biological Sample ꙳

꙳ Can ‘ALSO’ be exchanged at an Artifact Exchange Vault

Questions…

  1. Can we verify what other options are available?

  2. Are ‘ALL’ such only for items available at ruins?

Good to know that the options made available are apparently a random pick of 3 from a larger pool to choose from.

Would be interesting to know which ones are possible. I have not yet had the time to dive into the source. So if everyone can keep an eye out for any new categories shown at the Celestial Archives, it would be appreciated.

I edited my last post and Google doc to reflect these new finds.

Yes. I have been looking at this. Trying to determine if the difference is according to the planets inhabitants. Also, archives are not always difficult to find.
No time right now to make the changes. Maybe later today.
However, I just realized that the Exchange found in the lower hallway of one Archive offered a different set of options than the Exchange on the main platform…so not related to the inhabitants.

In other words…

  • Exchange in the lower hallway of one Archive
  • Exchange on the main platform

Are you talking about…

  • Two ‘Exchange Vaults’ in the same building?
  • Or 2 different buildings in the same system?

This planet has two (at least) GEK Archives.

Ground under a launchpad.

Archive 2.

Both floors show the same options.

LOWER FLOOR:

I have updated the Atlas-65 Archaeological Society tab on the Google Sheet once more by including a column for ‘Rarity’, which determines the full row colour for any found item accordingly. I did keep the colours light to maintain readability.

I have for now kept the ‘Metal Detector Enthusiasts’ tab unchanged, as ‘Valuable Rock Samples’ and ‘Recovered Items’ have thus far only shown as ‘Common’ (blue). If we find different ‘rarities’ I will make changes accordingly.

I am curious about something else, considering the Artifact Exchange Vault can give a new artifact in return. Would that not allow a player to endlessly exchange, or is this restricted somehow? How does this work?

I really have to get back into the game, I am falling behind …

Interesting. I had 3 exchanges at the last Archive I visited and one of the lower levels accepted a diffferent set from the other 2…needs more investigation.

I have attempted multiple exchanges but I think something changed with an 3xp patch. There now seems to be only 1 exchange allowed per vault. Perhaps there is a timer? Not sure…have not been able to play for a couple days.
