WORLDS Part 1 - Discussion

Is this a glitch? Or supposed to be this way?

Maybe they’ll let us keep it, like the melee jetpack glitch

Jooooo-cy! Too bad we can’t squish" them and see how juicy they really are!

And a note of drama… Several posters on reddit were concerned that a universe reset would wipe out their bases, etc. I figured that Hello Games would request save files as they did prior to the last universe reset if they planned that.

In the announcement video, Sean mentions a “universe refresh.” OK, not “reset” but …
[a prior expedition planet with bases, POI, save areas, etc. inundated]

Kind of funny, actually. Not to someone who still wants a base there, but still…

From the patch notes

  • Underlying terrain shapes have not been reset and existing planetary bases will not be moved

Guess that doesn’t mean crap if the planet suddenly becomes an ocean '^ _ ^

Also from the patch notes just below this

  • Worlds with salvageable scrap occasionally feature additional rusted remnants to collect.

Currently trying to find this and those floaty island paradises. No luck yet. The Salvageable Scrap planets I’ve landed on so far I havent noticed any rusted remnants

A weird glitch is that I’ve just built a small base on a sea world and when I look through the door, the sea isn’t there, but it can be seen through the windows either side of the door. I can partially go outside into this not sea world, but only half a step. As soon as I venture further the sea appears.

I am finding planets with islands but none with waterfalls. Are the gravitational storms the ones on the anomolous planets in the blue etc…systems? Or the storms on thw dissonent worlds?
It is possible to find lush planets with the old anomolous stuff, bubbles etc…but with the grav storms as well, very rare.
The search continues…

When wandering near the edges (walls) of the first space station I visited, moving the mouse laterally suddenly showed the outside view as thog6the station want there. More lateral mouse movement brought the station view back.

It never acted as though I really was outside the station. No decrease in Exosuit protection, etc. but the view was wrong.

When I get more time I’ll text a different star system. If the issue repeats, I’ll submit a ticket.

I found that digging up the broken ‘satelite’ thingies (that trigger corrupted sentinels) often yield rusty bits of junk into your inventory (icon is a rusty lump on a blue background)

I’ve been so distracted by everything else I’m just noticing now all smoke plumes are effected by wind direction <3

As does the rain etc

“Danger. Storm approaching” now has swiftly gathering dark storm clouds.

The first time I saw that I was trying to get a quick photo of an avian against the background of planetary rings. The clouds gathered so quickly that I lost the shot.

Kind of ominous and great all at once. :slightly_smiling_face:

Pretty funny that the Void Mother is supposed to be indoctrinating lifeforms with contaminated water, and that most oceans are already tainted by her, and that this update’s making everyone jump headfirst into them lol. Might be how they lead into the Purple / Dissonant Star Systems later on

I’m not sure why people are expecting waterfalls. There would be an entirely different kind of tech required for that. What they put in is dynamic surfaces (which is cool, but has been done before and is not a theoretical problem to do). They don’t have dynamic flow, which is a whole other kind of animal. Not so much of a problem locally (Minecraft does it… kinda), but I honestly can’t see a solution for it globally without knowing the terrain. Dwarf Fortress does it, but it does it by pre-generating terrain, setting markers for the river flow, and then persisting those markers in the world spec. Which NMS can’t really do, considering it has quintillions of worlds…

As I said to my friend when I saw the “waterfalls”. Dear glob they figured a sneaky way to do waterfalls without proc gen zones knowing it’s neighbour, the mad lads!! One step closer to Minecraft’s crown :crown:

Its the volcano lava flow trick all over again, just make it a big object

That would certainly work, but then all you get is a waterfall. No water flowing in, no water flowing out, just… some water falling from nowhere to nowhere? I mean, would that be satisfactory?

It sure is, at least until lowest common denom and platform parity reaches a point where proc gen can know it’s neighbour and give us real water physics with rivers that have sources :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I dunno if the Nintendo switch is quite there yet  :see_no_evil:

I haven’t looked into the underlying tech in probably ten years but I’m assuming proc gen is still in the “doesn’t know what’s around itself” phase, something I’m hoping to be wrong about some day.

And that proc gen game better be called Neighbours.

I’m not sure if anything is there yet, at least for real-time on the fly rendering.

ProcGen is a concept, not a technology. There’s several technologies around it. The field currently is lead by NMS (graphics) and Dwarf Fortress (complexity). They’re also both examples for two completely different approaches:
NMS generates all its content add-hoc, on the fly. It cannot afford to remember anything because there’s not enough memory for it, and it cannot afford to prepare notes because it needs to happen now.

Dwarf Fortress is essentially a simulation that builds the global data in a separate process that is executed before you can play, takes a couple megabytes of notes while doing so and then tosses everything out again. What you end up is a world modeled by physical (and historical) processes, largely reconstructed from the notes, with the minute details filled in on the fly.

But there’s no computer on this earth that could run the dwarf fortress process on the fly while player is playing, because you’d basically need the whole world present for that. The thing constantly zooms in on various part of the worlds and makes cross-references to get its notes together. There probably is a computer that can run the dwarf fortress process fast enough not to be significantly noticeable, so it could potentially do this with an entire universe of planets. It would still be a completely different tech, though, and you still couldn’t really have any connection between the individual worlds.

If you haven’t found the floating land with water flows, There are some here:

You can land on the larger one in the background (right), but the smaller one in the front doesn’t have any collision. I guess I could free place some geometry to be able to build up there. The collision mesh on the larger island isn’t very detailed so if you are playing around the lower levels you are going to need to walk around like a mime against the invisible wall until you learn where you can walk.

Still pretty cool. You can sit by the river and small waterfall on top. Or on the second level you can sit below a larger waterfall.

I am still looking…must see it for myself…why don’t emojis include binoculars or a spyglass…

:male_detective: I could’ve sworn there was, binocs or those little ones for the opera at least? Did they remove em tn make room for all the hair customisation options? This spy glass detective will have to do you

Oh no the version that shows up here doesn’t have the spy glass, he’s just creepy :pensive:
