NEXT Patch notes - Steam Experimental [POTENTIAL SPOILERS!]

Crashes With Large Bases

You may have seen in an earlier post that I’ve recently built a very large dome farm base. I’ve also built a couple of others - not quite so big, but still large.

Since moving to the Vulkan experimental build, I’ve noticed these bases have become unstable, and prone to crashing. It’s something I’ve noticed other players talking about in the past, but I’ve never experienced myself.

In an attempt to fix the problem, I checked my graphics settings. I noticed that Vulkan had reset my V-Sync to “off”, and my frame rate to “Max”.

With my setup, this probably means my graphics card is churning out something like 250 FPS - which is a horrible waste of processing power. It’s also completely pointless, since I can’t actually see anything above 60 FPS.

So I changed my V-Sync to “on”, and my Max FPS to “60”.

The big bases are stable once again. They don’t crash any more.

solid post. My laptop fps tanked too until a good “going through” of the graphics screen. I feel less alone somehow. I blamed it on 3xperimental, being what it is.

Get it while it’s hot

Notes
We have updated the experimental branch build:

  • Improved vsync on AMD.

  • Fixed some rare crashes.

  • Fixed some windowing issues.

Also there was an update to the nvidia driver last week which addresses some issues.

I just decided to try experimental. First run before system/steam restart, dropped to Play/Join screen in first 10 minutes. After restart and UNDERclock as low as it will go, no performance change. No drop. Didn’t get worse or laggy. Had to UNDERclock to get temps down to 80c for both CPU/GPU.
Overall, Im happy with it, no issues.

80c is hot…I sit around 68c…hope you have an extra fan or 2.

Yea, I do need to get another fan to run. Wondering if I may need to reapply CPU/GPU thermal compound and thermal pads. Factory paste may be weak, or not enough and place pads on smaller memory chips instead of paste. Im trying another fan first.

Adding an additional fan in a laptop sounds impossible to me, as I assume there is no space left to do so. I would also be very careful to attempt any changes to the internals being a laptop. You likely have to know very well how to disassemble the laptop to begin with. Re-applying thermal paste, is another thing you’d best get well informed about first. It will not be an easy task and you certainly don’t want to mess anything up. So please be very careful and know what you are doing.

That being said, 80°C does seem rather hot, as most stress test reviews of your laptop indicate levels no higher than 70°C. That is without even doing any UNDERclocking, running at full ‘default’ speeds. So I can certainly understand why you’d want to attempt a fix to reduce temps. Adjusting some in-game settings might help as well by the way, although not sure your test was at maxed out settings either.

How long do you have this laptop? Are you possibly still eligible for any warranty?

If it’s a laptop, just cleaning all the vents usually does a lot more than messing around with the configuration. Still needs disassembly to do right, though.

@DevilinPixy @jedidia This laptop is brand new, had it for a month now. I leave the Nvidia settings on default and the in-game everything on low. No Tess, No Blur.

The fan i want to get is just going to set on the table, oriented so it will blow underneath the laptop. I have a laptop cooler with three fans, but this cheap thing barely blows, so a desk fan is needed besides that.

Ive found an excellent walkthough for thermal and pad usage. But thats like last resort.

As for the fan, you can get one that your laptop sits on. Plugs into a USB. I had a laptop that always ran hot and the fan did an excellent job of cooling it.

I know that NMS can be quite heavy, but on low settings, it just seems too hot to me. Considering you only just bought it a month back, I would get in touch with the shop you bought it from. I assume you have at least 1 year warranty, if not longer. Not worth messing with it yourself before having at least checked with the shop first.

As for the fan, I see now as I didn’t think of external. Just make sure you aid the airflow, not work against it. I believe the exhaust is near the back. Hope you can get it somewhat sorted

Aye, external fans are an option. For that matter, just placing the laptop in a position in which it the airflow is not restricted by a wall or the table can help a lot in the summer months. Some laptops are notorious for overheating, I remember the HP pavillon I had once, hopelessly overpowered for its small case, and the main air intake was under the laptop. Just putting it on two books so there was more space between the intake and the surface of the table helped a lot, but all in all that laptop was just terribly designed…

@DevilinPixy @jedidia This laptop blows the heat out of either side and draws from the back. Perfect. I can have the fan blow from the back out of the way.

Thanks for the advice Pixy Chick and Jedi. :+1::up:

Is anyone in experimental able to multiplay?
@johnnycloud and I had a really strange…non-encounter? I could see the beacon and comm for his base but I was on a different planet…not the same planet that he sees…He could see my base just fine.
What I believe is happening, he is seeing my base as it saved to the server before I turned on experimental. I can see his comms because they are not planet dependant (like the comms that remained after NEXT even though the planets were gone) The fact that I see a different planet, says to me, that there will definitely be another reset. …
Please feel free to comment on this and hopefully clear up this mystery.
