News From The Void

Maybe change to “News from the Void Mother” ?
Then add speculative tidbits of what Void Mother might be saying or thinking.

OK … that was in jest. Mostly.

Interesting article about a study on AI:

It mostly shows two things:

First, the study rigorously mathematically proves that hallucinations in LLMs are unavoidable, a thing I have been intuitively suspecting all along based on how they work. It’s good to see hard confirmation of that, however.

Second, though, it also shows that hallucinations could be significantly reduced by changing training methods. Unfortunately, this would produce an AI that would respond things like “I don’t know” or “I’m unsure” a whole lot, which is not something people really want, so anybody adopting those training methods would put themselves at a severe competitive disadvantage.

I think it would be a good time to start establishing regulations for AI training…

I think it is a good time to put AI in its place as a tool for programmers and research and stop wasting time using it to do book reports, telling us how to treat that spot on our butts, and having it create “art”.

I despise AI being touted as a better thinker than humans. It’s like the human race has handed their intelligence over, claiming we don’t need it any more.

Unfortunately, that ain’t gonna happen. The amount of money sunk into the technology is in the trillions. It needs to change the world, or return of investment will take a century. The moment it becomes undeniably clear in the public consciousness that it’s crap for most of its touted use-cases is the moment all hell breaks loose at the stockmarkets. They’ll keep trying to sell it for everything and anything in the hopes of buying enough time to try and make it change the world. It’s pretty much the only option they have.

Yes. And in the meantime we pay the price, literally. Electric bills are surging here and another data center is being built in Arkansas with each one raising the roof on electric prices.

I needed the Sean Murray Head Explode gif the other day. I did what I usually do, type the search term then click images.

However Gemini insisted it’s help was more prescient before I could get to my images.

“As far as we know, nobody named Sean Murray has had their head explode. However, here is a list of people with the name Sean Murray who had medical difficulties”.

Thanks Gemini…

I don’t even have words for how pathetic and tragic this is

It’s not just Egypt. The British Museum has been heamorraging valuable ancient artifacts for years.

At least they have recovered some. I can’t imagine the idiocy of melting down a 3000 year old artifact. I guess black market collectors have become scarce…

Although some have been arrested, the items we had on loan, are still missing. Melting them down would decrease value a lot, so there is still hope, but it’s not unlikely to happen, as it makes it a lot easier to rid of.

You don’t know the half of it. School vaccines are not only being dropped in Florida, but the idea is spreading. And RFK is rearranging the long standing, time proven order in which vaccines are given to kids.

I am really scared for what comes next.

We really do just live in a reality of Onion article headlines now. What a whacky timeline.

I am planning a small party for a few friends. Wanted to make mug cakes in large, fall-themed mugs. So I went shopping in the WalMart app…then on Amazon…a set of 4 mugs is running anywhere from $35-$58…for 4 coffee mugs…

Hokay. There’s a UK retailer called ASDA. They’re actually owned by Walmart. I think the Dollar is currently around 1:1 with the Pound, so prices are roughly comparable. This is what ASDA are selling mugs for today:

Yep. The tariffs are starting to bite. Not only are prices soaring but variety is very limited.

Thinking I will be changing my focus at resale shops

I guess we will all be using the one plain, white mug until they are out of stock.

Amazon is even worse

There was a scene in Flight of the Concords where they’re arguing over wether they had the budget to buy another cup or to just keep sharing the same one.

The whole thing was a joke about the struggle of a struggling artist in a niche genre.

This scene is now applicable to all US of Americans

I caution anyone about making mug cakes for me. My mug’s not that attractive.

… Glad I bought a set of 4 large mugs last year! They are wide and hold 16 oz. Good as a soup mug too.

Things are slowly falling apart here. How’s everyone else?

I can’t believe any collector would buy this stuff - It will be too well-known. Added to that, archaeological material is seldom insured - because it can never be replaced. So I can only think of one fate for these things.
