There’s rioting in LA? What happened?

British and Australian journalists were shot with rubber bullets.
As for what happened;
A rumor started that ICE was rounding up undocumented immigrants at a Home Depot store
So the 80% majority undocumented area became alarmed. They showed up to protest.
Now Trump has called in the national guard
There has been protesting almost every weekend someone in the US.
The media just is not covering it.
But this one has the potential to become lethal

The reports about the Home Depot raid may have been incorrect - but we only have the word of ICE officials on that one.

What is undisputed is that ICE arrested 114 people in other raids around the LA area on Friday.

And calling in the military almost always makes it worse. But that’s exactly what trump wants. He creates his own justification and sets another precedent for future action. It is the governor of the state who calls up National Guard. Not the President

Many of the powers Trump has gathered to himself are based on the spurious claim of a national emergency. Nobody else seems to have noticed this emergency - but Trump has declared one. Obviously, this is open to challenge in the courts.

I wonder if Trump has deliberately set about creating a real national emergency, thus justifying his claims on those powers?

He is without a doubt, trying to at least make it look like there is a real emergency.
He is also still going after Biden with full gusto even launching an investigation into his mental health while in office. Why? Is he going to use a mental deficiency to lay grounds for something he wants to change? If so, what?

One thing to know about protests in the US. By and large they are peaceful but there is a group of people who travel to each protest and they have bad intent. They are the ones who burn, loot, etc…
California is no stranger to protests. They know how this goes. They told the president National Guard was not needed.
He ignored it.
So far, they are there to protect federal assets.
EDIT 700 Marines to be ordered to LA
EDIT protests expected to spread to San Fransico
2000 more National Guards being deployed
The escalation is happening

Apart from all the moral and political ramifications of this whole thing, I can’t stop but wonder… Why marines? Did LA block all roads and they needed to call the navy to land an invasion force from the sea??

I suspect a couple of things:

  1. Trump actually wants to provoke a high profile confrontation.
  2. Marines are very high-profile. “Send in the Marines!” has been a popular rallying cry for years. “Deploy Infantry” just doesn’t have the same popular appeal.
  3. The current state of geopolitics means US marines are unlikely to be required elsewhere in the short term. They’re available.

Trump is making a statement - and he’s prepared to kill his own citizens, and risk a civil war, in order to do it.

The Navy are the sea faring ones, aircraft carriers, etc. The Marines use hybrid / amphibious ships and vehicles, they are trained to be flexible, if I remember correctly.

I thought the Marines were part of the navy, regardless of what boats they use?

The US Marine Corps were originally part of the Navy, and ship-based. Over 300 years, their role has changed, and they are now regarded as a separate rapid-response expeditionary and assault force. They do use boats and landing craft, but they also have aircraft and land vehicles. All marines, regardless of duties, are trained as infantrymen.

They are still organised as part of the US Department of the Navy, but they are a separate force. The distinction is probably best seen from their extensive deployment in Iraq - which is mostly landlocked, and doesn’t really have a coastline.

 that’s a good one…
The Marines are elite and highly trained.
The Navy would be used to block any protests at sea or people escaping at sea, of course, that is what the Coast Guard is for.
Calling the military on your own people is the worst decision anyone can make.
For now, they are ‘guarding federal assets’
Let’s hope it stays that way.

Apparently there are various AI information services saying these pictures are faked from Biden’s evacuation of troops from Afghanistan. The BBC have done their best to fact check them, and conclude that there’s no trace of them before 6th June 2025.

See here (you have to scan down for the specific article):

And this is why I hardly look at news these days.
Yes they are sending troops
It is supposedly costing $134 million
And none of it is helped by the fact that all sides are using falsified and exaggerated info
Trump admin is seeing to it press coverage is using tight shots to make the situation look huge
It’s actually a very small area of LA
The real issue is exactly this though. We live under an admin that will misrepresent the facts and those fighting back will do the same.

What do you do?

Interesting that currently only FOX is carrying what trump is saying. Other news agencies reporting on how overblown and misleading his statements are

All his favourite presidents got to go and deploy the troops against a new threat on false pretences, he just really wanted to have a go of it, even if the best he could muster was invading one of his own states with the marines. HOO-RAH!
