Music Tastes among ETARCers?

Good day for me and new music releases, this hit digital at midnight and I’ll have a nice new record in the post soon to celebrate with  I think. I ordered it months ago

Not familiar with Spotify or using similar music streaming services in general, but from what I heard, ‘Deezer’ is proactive anti-AI.

I did not expect to run into this, but yay, finally the MTV Unplugged release!
Had this audio copied on cassette, good old times! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Various other stores as well by the way

(Still sad we lost you Dolores …)

My son uses this but it is for YT content. But most things are listed on YT. My only issue with it has been that it seems to drain my battery.

This can only mean one thing.

Advertisements are an untapped source of energy

My old audio system has always been used to play my CDs, audio from TV (+ several consoles hooked up), cassettes, and some radio at times. In the past I had a larger midi-set, with the same abilities. It does have my actual decent speakers hooked up, for proper listening in my living room.

My old audio setup has never been able to support the many digital sources I have got nowadays. Any audio I had on my PC would play over my old computer speaker set. The pickup I purchased last year would play over its own monitor speakers directly. My mobile phone, I rarely use as a source at home, just when outdoors, or travelling.

I know there are all sorts of solutions nowadays, and actually not even all that expensive. I just never actually looked for a semi-proper solution to integrate all my devices, just juggled as I felt needed so far. Finally decided to have a look and came across a small amplifier I really liked the looks of. Checked the options to see if it could fit my needs and persuaded myself into a purchase after looking into some reviews.

I had considered the MC351 for a while, slightly more powerful/decent, but otherwise technically almost identical. Still a nice look, but no headphones jack, nor a remote. The cheaper version with the gimmicky (hot) tubes, has a rounder model, and feels even more retro, which I fell in love with in the first place.

Found AliExpress to be quite a lot cheaper, and ended up with a deal, pretty much half the price of the other, then still tempting model. That made it a simple choice and purchased the MC331 for €84,= (VAT included) and free (drop)shipping from Germany (Chinese seller). Ordered last Thursday evening, delivered earlier today (Monday).

Still using my old mini-tower through line-out, but speakers moved to the new device. Have to swap RCA tulips when switching to use TV instead. I can now however get any other source to play on it. For quite some time now I have a Bluetooth USB device on my PC, so that works flawless. Even my pickup can be hooked up directly (has Phono out and Line out (pre-amp), or through USB to PC (for recording), to then stream over BT to the new device. All I want to add, as it did not come included, is a USB cable to directly hook up my phone or other device as a source.

On PC I can now just run VLC to the new toy for some proper digital audio listening experience, while still having any other audio on PC through its own speaker set. Such a joy!

(sticker needs removing)

My old, ever shrinking setup … hehe. The other 4 speakers are not in view. I still like old school devices, just never owned anything decent, nor got into it in recent years, but who knows … For now, I am happy with what I got!

My computer setup, tower to the left of it, with my pickup on the shelve above my monitor. A place I am at way too often, but enjoying it as well.

Nice to have everything in one spot. Mine is spread out. The record player in the den. My TV and consoles use a sound bar and on my PC I have used 5.1 Logitech for ages. I get a new set every 10 years.

The only time I BT is in my car and once in a while to my soundbar.

One thing I have found listening to 65DOS, it really matters what I play their music on. So many of the higher electronic tones do not come thru on many speakers. (If anyone has only used phone or laptop speakers for 65DOS, you are missing about 1/3 of the music) And it may sound weird but my Logitech speakers work the best for those tones. The Klipsch I bought for my record player are great but really only part of a larger setup which is way too expensive for now. For that reason, they are not great for 65DOS but work wonderfully for my other records. Thankfully, I can hook my record player to my PC via USB for playing and recording.

Your amp is really cute. The tubes are so cool.

I can’t use bluetooth for headphones because I can’t unhear the signal noise that bleeds through even when it’s a fairly busy mix, but Bluetooth speakers are fine.

I just have a 2.1 setup I’ve been using with my pc/console for years. I also find it nearly impossible to find a wired set of pc speakers these days in store. Everything is Bluetooth soundbar and no re daily available solutions for under 100 euro . Argos used to be good for a cheap replacement set in a pinch but that has sadly abandoned the island. Stupid island.

I have pipe dreams of having a nice speaker set up but my current living arragements don’t currently allow for it.

Saying that there is a full band PA and Speaker setup in my shed… If I reeeeallly want to hear all the subtle frequencies i do have options. Just not convenient ones :joy:

I absolutely adore the valve tubes on that thing, gimmicky or not I might need to find something similar. My first band with friends when I was 13, our bassist used his dads old Marshall tube amp and I’ll always love that warm him. It was also nice to stand next to in a cold garage during winter

New Collab between these two out next month. Not familiar with Real Bad Man but eagerly anticipating Genevieves next solo album (supposedly anime rock inspired)

There’s a second song showcased too, Little Claws, and it has this lovely little subdued Oingo Boingo style driving groove through it too.

My daughter now has a bass. She wanted to know what she should learn first.

I gave her this  (I believe in setting the bar high)

Some of my favourite bass parts - not technical, not virtuoso, but IMHO, most effective:

Going back to an earlier conversation - played on a proper stereo with 10” woofers, the bass in Pink Floyd’s “One Of These Days” would crack your ceiling, and knock ornaments off shelves in the apartment upstairs. Played on weedy computer speakers, the bass is barely audible. Modern technology has a lot to answer for.

This guy has really easy beginner bass lines.

Sorry I mean he has bass lines that will easily put a beginner off of learning. At least that’s my excuse for not getting better

Well, young Thundercat certainly doesn’t play three chords to an audience of thousands, does he?

Just the sort of thing to encourage a beginner.

It occurs to me that if you’re using this guy as an example of the sort of musician you want to be, that’s possibly why you’re not a millionaire pop star.

If you want people to pay you to play music, it helps a lot if you play stuff they want to hear.

In my workshop, I have cobbled together a TV sound bar & surround sound system that were unwanted leftovers from a (indulgent) relative’s home entertainment system upgrade.

This running via bluetooth makes for a solid, crisp & bassy system. Definately a step up from the little single speaker transistor radio that was once the norm in a man’s tool shed.

For the longest time, Mad Hope only existed as a 30 second sting I’d use to get my brain working first thing in the morning at the top of a playlist.

Now it’s a full 3 minute song :star_struck:

Also, if you’ve played death stranding 2, you might recognise Gen Hoshino. He played the Musician but also has a special dance video cameo if you play Dollman his favourite song.

Hey Sam, did you know apple’s are red things you eat with your mouth? They also keep the doctor away!

That’s my best dollman impression.

Two Sam’s also feature on this track I’m just now realising with all this death stranding talk… hey, I’m Sam too!!!
