Accepting all the above, I still don’t understand the joke. Are these memes being created by an AI that doesn’t know how humour works?
Was AI born in the 2000s?
Memes describe concepts, common realisations, or shared emotions, they don’t claim to be hahah-funny jokes. Sorry for analysing the heck out of this, ignore if uninterested. ![]()
Boring analysis
Internet memes depict a scene or faces (or a commonly spoken phrase or quote) that is well known or recognisable, and that triggers an emotion or memory. You as onlooker realise that other people share this emotion and reaction, and it makes you part of the in-group.
E.g. the one about the date is dumbfounded speechlessness, because I was about to say, these cashiers are quick-math geniuses, followed by the embarrassed realisation that since 2018, they obviously have not needed to calculate the ages of the 80% of the population that has a 19xx birthyear.
School teachers would probably prefer if teenagers would practice to express themselves in full sentences instead of images – Hey, that could be a nice essay topic! ;-D
Teacher: “Express this meme in one word. 1) describe the scene objectively. 2) describe the subjective emotions…”
Kids:
I can haz sentences? My mind is blown!
I would say the emotions above are embarrassment, exhaustion, unfairness, overzealousness, tragedy, vengeance, dumdfoundedness, do others have the same intuition?
PS: How do funny jokes work? Do they rely on your feeling of surprise, “Wait, how did these two separate thoughts suddenly come together?!?”
No, I accept this. I will happily settle for poignant, acutely observed, ironic, revealing, sarcastic, whimsical, bizarre, playful, surreal and sardonic. Funny has many faces.
However, a picture of an animal or person wearing an expression of acute constipation, coupled with a statement describing some completely inconsequential situation fulfils none of the above.
Idk. I think @Mad-Hatter is redefining the definition of meme. ![]()
It has graphiccs and text. It’s short, to the point, and very funny.
I’m not sure what the meme police could object to.
In response to @Clemm s post in the Remnant thread
One of my relatives recently returned home from holidays to their shared property to discover ALL their spoons were gone. Desert spoons, tea spoons, soup spoons… all of them.
Its just so weirdly amusing & your post reminded me of it because they in fact do NOT own a spoon ![]()
It took me an entire day with this one. But I sat down, exhausted, and it hit me.
