They certainly check more than IP, as my IP location is not matching the location they found. I believe @Polyphemus is correct about closest connection point, as that matches my rerouting I have setup for it.
Yes, mine is showing me several miles from where I actually am.
I can now confirm @kyle-culver (dev-kit winner) is alive and well. He responded to me on Twitter. He has just been very busy this week.

Well, we are supposedly uplinked to a Chinese military satellite. Hope it doesn’t vaporize all of us as it passes over! 
Anyone think we may have to physically go to these locations, and catch an anomaly? Kinda like how Pokemon Go works.

It could be the locations of the Myriad remote magnetic poles. I’ve been predicting that WARE would use them to enslave us without headsets
