I have been thinking about the last update (particularly lacklustre, IMHO), but I know others differ. I have been wondering what LNF mechanic this update is testing.
I think what they’re testing is a concept I will call, for want of a better word, “Cargo”.
Until this update, materials, goods, and items had two kinds of status – they could be lying around the environment, available for collection, or they could be part of inventory – either yours, or that of an NPC or store. Environmental items could only be taken by the player. Inventory items could only be used or traded by the player.
The “Cargo” concept introduces a third status for goods, materials and items. Cargo can be collected and moved. It can be sold, traded or converted into other goods – but it does not form part of inventory.
Unlike inventory items, Cargo can be dropped, lost, stolen, damaged and destroyed. The concept of Cargo introduces a whole new set of possibilities for goods transport, storage, trade, and raiding. Cargo has to be defended against thieves and physical damage. Cargo can only be transported or stored in limited quantities.
Cargo can only be transported in specifically designed vessels (merchant ships?).
I can see Cargo forming the basis of a whole trading economy, in which large profits can be gained from the successful delivery of Cargo. Delivery of Cargo is not, however, simple. It requires special ships, and possibly special warehouses, both of which have to be defended from attack by thieves.
Players in control of a territory could profit from their own Cargo trade within that territory, whilst at the same time trying to raid and steal the Cargo of rival traders passing through.
There are many possibilities – alliances could be formed, where players band together to defend each other, or, at least, agree not to attack each other. Players might choose not to attack, but instead charge passing convoys a fee for safe passage. Cargo opens up a whole range of choices.
