Light No Fire

I am a complete shutdown kind of person. Always have been.

I used to be, but I’m still using my old PC, so stress it less by keeping it on but in standby mode. Got to get new one up and running (under a different login ID) soon!

Fifty years ago, I read that it used more electricity to turn on a fluorescent tube light than it did to run the thing for 8 hours. So if you turned the light on three times a day or more, it was actually cheaper to just leave it turned on 24 hours a day.

Thirty years ago I read something very similar about PCs - that starting them up used a lot more power than leaving them running. Leaving them turned on also caused a lot less thermal stress = problems caused by the chips heating up when on, then cooling down when off. It was much less stressful to just leave them on.

You may not realise it, but modern PCs are not designed to be ever turned off. As long as they’re plugged into the mains (or the battery is still fitted), a small monitoring section of the processor is always active.

I shut down my PCs with the “shut down” button - but I don’t unplug them. So they’re never really turned off..

Same. I use the shut down button but the only time they are unplugged is when a bad storm with lots of lightning is moving thru.

Some six year old art from one of Hello Games own that reminds me very much of Light No Fire which I found interesting. There’s more on their ArtStation at https://www.artstation.com/beaulamb.

Of course this wont be direct concept art for LNF but, with development of LNF likely starting around 2019, it’s very possible this influenced/was influenced by the actual LNF concept art that would be getting worked on around the same time.

“What I am looking at every day is well past the point any other studio would be talking about their game.”

“You know,” he laughs when I broach the subject during our conversation, “I’ve learned my very important lesson of not talking about things beforehand. I will say, we are so far beyond the point where we should have said something by now in terms of what we have on screen, of what we’re playing every day.”

“I think at some point we will, you know, let people see more of the game, and I think that it will be very exciting for people when they do see that. I think what I am looking at every day is well past the point any other studio would be talking about their game and showing more.”

“We’ve put out a trailer [for Light No Fire], and then we haven’t said anything,” he continued, “and I think that’s probably the way people would prefer it in some ways too.”

“I have to bite my lip to not talk to you about [Light No Fire], and to not show it to people,” he added elsewhere in our conversation. “But I am so incredibly excited about it, and it is so– it is such a joy to work on.”

The room for improvement is vast and I hope they make good use of the extra space. I love NMS but there is some truth to the “ocean big and puddle deep” argument. I don’t think HG can make such a drastic change to NMS without changing what the feel is, that is to say changing it to a true survival. As an example, there are so many QoL things I forget them sometimes and do it the hard way. I have probably close to 4-500 hours in and am still having fun, and I do believe of the space trifecta, NMS comes out on top. All that to say the three things I hope LNF improves on is 1. Combat, 2, inventory management, and 3. As much physicalization of game mechanics as possible while balancing fun.

Mental vomit over now

My personal mindset: NMS is exploration with elements of survival, combat, and trade. So I look at survival as a lower priority and take advantage of Hello Games ’ introduction of adjustable difficulty settings.

Since I loathe and shun combat, I’m optimistically hopeful that Light No Fire will also have adjustable difficulty settings. I plan to play solo explorer and xenophotographer, as in No Man’s Sky.

If I remember correctly, Sean Murray would compare No Mans Sky to Minecraft in some ways. When you look at it that way, it makes sense why the game is the way it is.

I dont care if there is or isnt combat in a game, as long as its fun and there are things to do. But if there is combat, it needs to have these two things for me: 1. Be fun to engage in combat and have a good reason, not just mindless killing of things to grind for resources/loot in an endless loop. And 2, be mostly optional and/or have a stealth/pacifist option.

Sigh. The murder kill thrill crowd has begun lusting for war in Light No Fire and supposing it will happen quickly…

Typical bloodthirsty lot.

As long as there is a limit to the system(IE an actual system in place that makes it totally optional) then war could be a really cool concept. Mass Fantasy War could be a blast for some people.
