That’s amazing. We always knew that an earth-sized planet could hold a ring for a very short time (geologically speaking), but finding evidence that earth actually might have had one is quite another level…
This article is all about the rocket landing but it should really be a big kudos to the person flying the drone.
Both the drone pilot and the guy that gave the ok to fly the drone this close to a landing rocket are completely out of their minds! ![]()
Good attempt. engines cut of a couple meters too high, or the guy that engineered the legs screwed up, or the guys that assembled the legs screwed up. Looks like a fixable problem. Now the question is how detailed their data resolution is to pinpoint the issue…
That is some great footage indeed.
Agree, and controlling a drone is an insane sport for some!
SpaceX - Crew 9
Interesting, just realised how Crew 9 only consists of 2 members due to Boeing Starliner failing earlier. This way they have seats available for ISS crew return.
Go go Hague and Gorbunov!
(makes me wonder if I should make adjustments to my Crew-9 patch…)
Good launch, all nominal.
… and wow, that emotion of Cardman, says a lot.
In the aftermath of the devastating hurricane that just wrecked multiple states, including my cousin’s house in Georgia, I completely forgot about this. I am glad all was okay and they could proceed. This one was at the Cape wasn’t it?
I was astonished by how little international news that attracted. It’s becoming like US school mass shootings - they used to arouse global concern and sympathy, and now they’re hardly considered worth reporting.
We’re seeing a phenomenon developing here. Real, preventable, disasters are being ignored, while fake news and conspiracy theories are grabbing the headlines.
One moment leading into the hurricane; as the mayor of Tallahassee was speaking with the Weather Channel on how catastrophic (because that is the kind of wording needed to grab people’s attention) the damage would be, a man runs into the camera and shouts, fight fight fight trump trump 2024…the whole interview had to stop and cut away for several minutes. People seem to have lost all ability to be rational and think.
The world is experiencing disaster fatigue. I keep track of it worldwide. The weather is devastating lives in many places.
Here, they are thinking of reworking the hurricane rating. Currently, it focuses on wind speed but it needs to focus on storm surge and rainfall because it is the water that kills the most. Over 60 dead so far with this one.
Another fact, many places, especially in Florida, no longer have access to home insurance. Either the price is higher than their mortgage payment or providers refuse to offer any because the risk is too high. Yet, people still flock there because the little sliver of ocean view between buildings and power lines is apparently worth the million $$$ they will be stuck with once it is all swept away.
In the period immediately before the hurricane hit, I saw an interview with one law enforcement officer. They were trying to persuade people to evacuate, but they had no powers (and probably not the manpower) to enforce it. He said “If you choose to ignore our advice, and don’t evacuate, please write your name and social security number on your arm in permanent marker, so we can identify your body afterwards”.
Yes. That has become a common thing now.
Also, the markings on buildings as they search afterward
Sad times.
Sorry to hear about your Cousins house.
As Polyphemous has been saying very little coverage of environmental disasters anymore. Everyones too busy reporting on political unrest in their country because of refugees. Or at least because an echo chamber convinced them refugees were a danger.
Why are there refugees though? Well if its not war, or famine, it’s probably all those climate disasters… which can lead to famine… and war…
But lets report on how these people are concerned that foreign men are going to take their jobs or women instead. I think the real and true reason is they’re worried a foreign person might make their children realise their dads a prick
It’s all just insecurity at the end of the day and not knowing how to deal with those thoughts or emotions.
I’ve seen those CERT X’s in videogames (usually zombie ones) and just always thought they were like, military tags or something. Not far off. Super grim signs.
If you can survive the storms you can survive the Election cycle. you guys got this, don’t vote for the organge man, and while Kamala’s warming Bernie Sanders seat, you guys gotta amp up Bernie! ![]()
Mostly because photos of him and our current president, need to happen more
I’m saying this as a joke or parody, but part of me fears it’s true.
All these networks had been paid to advertise the recent Twisters movie. It was in the contract that they could not give bad press to anything related to the movie, including it’s stars. This somehow also covered the movies CGI star, Extreme Weather. So as not to piss off advertisors and investors and you never, ever, cross Universal, Time Warner or Amblin entertainment, nobody could cover the disaster, on a global scale, or face Litigation ![]()
I just always think of Gamespot firing Jeff Gertsman for giving Kane and Lynch a bad review the same month Square Enix paid them a shit load of money to advertise it all over their website ![]()
I’m afraid that by now I have to consider Bernie “what might have been” if the democrats had some sense, but by now now, he’s too old. And I think he’s got enough sense to realize that himself.
I know I just, I really think everyone deserves a turn at having a really adorable President… Even if ours is just a figurehead and doesn’t really make any big political decisions because we have “Parliament”… Everyone should have at least one loveable President in their history.

I think Bernie was that guy <3
I’m not sure adorable would last long these days.
Updates on the storm damage; likely $30 billion. Many areas will be altered forever. Some areas will not have electricity or internet for months.
Yes. I love the BD bots.
Until they walk in my front door and tell they are now in control and resistence is futile.
They look quite loveable, dancing. Then I imagine them fitted with assault rifles, grenade launchers, and infra-red LIDAR.
It’s like the early days of computers - they were marvellous, but they were prohibitively expensive. This is the kind of technology you can’t put back in the bottle. Pretty soon any middling engineering facility will be able to make them, and they won’t cost any more than a motorcycle. And at that point, they become available to any terrorist or “freedom fighter” with the necessary psychosis.
At least we’re still lacking a practical powersource for extended outdoors operations. Though of course such a powersource would also help a lot with our cars…
Imagine 40 or 50 of these things, weaponised and covering an interdiction zone. They could look like anything - rusting oil drums, discarded fridges, clumps of vegetation. Moving at night, and forming an integrated surveillance network. Communicating with each other by line-of sight infra red laser. No radio emissions.
Like cats, they could spend most of their time quiescent. Silent, cold, low power consumption, only sensors operating. If there were no targets in the area, they could open solar panels, and recharge during the day.
And then, when a target does enter the area - boom!
