It is my understanding that the 6-7 silliness generally means ‘maybe, possibly, could be, undecided’ & it is just a good example of the brain-rot dumbness that TicTok breeds.
I randomly said 6 7 to my (adult) daughter & she immediately burst into ‘dance’ much to my feined disgust, which of course resulted in the 2 of us laughing at the stupidity of it.
Back in the sixties (and probably before) there were Rat Rods and Rat Bikes. They were rusty because the owners had no money, so they built their vehicles out of whatever scrap they could find or scrounge up.
Then the look became fashionable, and people who do have money are now paying other people to paint rust onto very expensive vehicles. I think that’s what we have here.
I’ve been on both ends of the Rat Rods/Rat Bike spectrum. Mostly motorbikes because they are much smaller & take up less room.
I’ve had absolute jalopy junk that is cobbled together & a little frightening to ride. I’ve also had fixed up junk that is actually very safe but looks like I dragged it off the scrap-heap. Both have been much easier to live with than the pristine examples I’ve owned, where you are so worried about perfect looks that you are nervous to ride them. Not that I don’t appreciate a beautiful machine…it’s just that I can’t have nice things.
I have not however ever taken to intentionally ruining a perfectly good vehicle or purposely designed one to be a pile of s***. That seems to be a modern take on the old ‘rat’ concept.
Of course in that case you’re no longer allowed to wear them, at least according to my wife.
“But others buy them like this”. “Yes, that’s the point. Yours are just torn, and you can see the difference. They’re being chique, you’re just being cheap!” Oh well, I’ll put on another pair, I guess…
Dang. That’s a lot of Bondo. I had a ‘75 Plymouth Duster that I loved. I worked on it for over a year. As I prepped it for paint, I experienced this stripped back effect. Though I found a lot of appeal in the look, I never would have dreamed to leave it that way. OMG! I have to admit it. I love it!!!
Years later, a woman I know was sanding back multi layers of paint on her kitchen cabinets when part way thru, she walked back into the room and screamed, I love it! She left her cabinets with all the colors showing thru and they look amazing
I can get behind this idea.
I helped my brother strip back his ‘56 Chevy. It would have looked awesome like this
And this may cost a small fortune to get someone else to do it, but doing it yourself is absolutely affordable and the way to go
And is that Tesla vid AI voiced? Appropriate…and it’s still ugly. I see Teslas on occasion going down the interstate. All I can think is I don’t want to be anywhere near it if there is a wreck.
I’m not a fan of Cybertrucks but the effect of the wrap is pretty good.
I remember quite a while back when car wraps were still fairly new & used mostly for signage, that a fellow in the UK had his new work van wrapped to look like a rusty old van as an amusing defence against thieves breaking in to steal tools. It really did look like an old, grimey bluish-white van with bad rust & staining in all the right places & looked very realistic. I have no idea if it worked as a deterant, but it looked great. If I remember correctly, he’d also altered the door mechanisms to fix some exploit that thieves used to easily open his particular model.
I have to say the truck I saw on the road was excellent. Much better than the one in the vid.
I can also see why this is becoming a popular idea because, trying to find parts that are in good condition for older vehicles is becoming more difficult.
As a teen, you could scavenge wrecking yards and find all kinds of goodies. But now, not so much. The older vehicles have been scavenged or have rusted away. You kinda have to roll with what you can find. This method allows for imperfections and is likely the reason it has gained traction.
I agree. Working with a less than perfect product & then just blending it in to the rest or your less than perfect project is much easier. It’s kind of fun too.
My personal favourites are where the ugliness hides a very well kept or restored machine underneath. In my part of the world they are often refered to as ‘sleepers’.
Unfortunately, here in Europe (I know the UK is not technically “in” Europe, but we share the same legislation), we have, for years, been subject to increasingly stringent vehicle safety, construction, and enviromental restrictions. Type approval requirements, construction and use regulations, and emission controls, make it increassingly difficult to keep old vehicles on the road. In many cases, it’s actually illegal to modify a vehicle beyond the original manufacturer’s specification.
Whilst I accept that you can’t allow millions of cars to do four miles per gallon, whilst belching black smoke into the atmosphere, and you can’t allow then to disintegrate into cluster bombs in the event of an accident, I can’t help feeling we’ve lost something.
What? UK is not in the EU, you mean. It certainly is on the European continent, unless you drifted away recently.
As you say above, the mean thing about the fashionably torn jeans is IMHO that it signalises: “I am rich enough that I not only pay people to make me clothes, but also pay people to tear them - and then, I am still equally respected and could go to a job interview like that. And YOU cannot.”
But back to the topic of getting a laugh out of life:
