I’m sure everyone would recognize the little alert message. You’re going to an unexplored planet, you enter the atmosphere, and it pops up in the corner of the screen. It says “New Record” and maybe “coldest planet” or “hottest planet” or whatever. So I’m heading in to land on this planet and it pops up: New Record, Least Hospitable Planet.
These guys need to upgrade their tourist bureau. What does that even mean? It’s cold, but it didn’t break the record for coldest. Yes, there was a solidly blinding blizzard going on, but it’s not like they have that market cornered. I’ve landed blind a fair number of times. Once the blizzard cleared and I got out of my ship the first plant I saw was basically a clump of pointy sticks, but there’s other, quite nice, big evergreen bushes. I haven’t seen any animals yet so maybe there’s predators, but as I said, I haven’t seen any yet if there are. I’ve landed where things tried to eat me as soon as my boots hit the ground. That was inhospitable.
I dunno. Maybe the planet is just xenophobic and wanted to scare me away…
It seems to be based on a “hostility quotient” when you view the listing in the wonders menu. It’s not one I’ve seen pop up in a while, apparently it’s been a year since I found my least hospitable, zero creatures discovered so I didn’t spend any time there it would seem. I might just pop through it’s portal and investigate.
It has a hostility quotient of 83.9%. I wonder does it mean the percentage of creatures which will be aggressive, or perhaps it’s the combined viciousness of the creatures on the planet, rather than amount overall? Perhaps it’s a combination of viciousness of creatures, sentinel aggression and local environment?
Time to Citizen Scientist
(turns out it was a planet in Etarcia ECSD )
It had 7 creatures, one predator (Arrow Dingoid, discovered 5 years ago by @johnnycloud ) but it was the kind of predator that only hunts other creatures (option shows as feed creature rather than distract with pellets) . Sentinels were aggressive and weather was extreme. I’m guessing it must be an aggregate of all 3 but I’ve certainly been to less hospitable places. What even are gas giants in this metric?
Just went to a nearby, middle of nowhere town to grab some supplies ahead of an ice storm. Someone stood under the overpass and painted ‘Steve was here 2025’
I have a strong urge, which is very unlike me, to go back tonight and spray paint, ‘you must be flat broke.’
Cause I mean why else would you paint under the overpass in the middle of nowhere unless you are too broke to go anywhere else.
So if you don’t hear from me for a while, I will be in the county jail waiting for someone to post bail and then likely on cleanup detail trying to sandblast paint off a concrete pylon.
… or you could be the next Banksy. That’s how he started. And we’ll have to pay to get into galleries to see your crocheted octopiiiiiiii (it’s an octopus - I couldn’t give it 8 legs, so I gave it 8 "i"s)
Wind temps here have been near 0F for a few days. Air temps have not been above freezing. My gate at the end of my driveway and my mailbox have been frozen shut for 3 days.
There is some sunshine today. Waiting to see if my prison bonds melt.
Oscar night has been a yearly tradition for me for the last 10 years thanks to the wonderful world of On Cinema at the Cinema.
It’s a live loosely structured comedy performance and you never really know whats going to happen.
Its basically my version of the MCU in terms of, accessability and required reading/viewing.
I’ll be watching at midnight (4pm pt) and doing all my fishing at Tims fishing tournament location. Which will be surreal when one of the hosts is named Tim.
I added a colorful night scene as my desktop wallpaper. For the longest time, I could not figure out what was “parked” up on the mountain a left. Not a starship, I thought. Weird-looking “plant,” I mused. And an odd position for something.
Finally, I snagged a shot of the area, enlarged it, and only then realized … “it’s a glowing flutterby, you idiot!” It’s not distant, it’s relatively close! ROFL
I’m still not sure what I’m supposed to be seeing.
Both images look identical to me. I have downloaded and reuploaded both side by side to show you there is nothing odd between the two identical images.
