Getting a laugh out of life

:grimacing: wow! I can not imagine doing that to someone. Why people? Geez.

I have been dipping my toes into the Internet again. Posting art on Instagram. Please, no trolls.

Thank goodness for our little Oasis, thank you admins!

I’ve had some odd moments online over the years, usually due to naivety on my part, had some guy kinda creep on me and was trying to buy me games he wanted to watch me play on PSN/Youtube, back when I was just streaming NMS VR to archive my initial reaction/make a fun montage video.

I privated all the footage and stayed off streaming on youtube for about 4 years it just got very weird, sent me an unsolicited photo that, while wasn’t crude, was just odd, and they got very pushy with sending me gifts via PSN codes and instructing me to buy/stream X game. I sensed a loneliness in them before all of this, so I engaged with their comments during stream but the way they just escalated it from there was very alarming and took me a while to realise many lines had been crossed.

Again it was all down to my own naivety, and I’m not as frivolous with streams etc now, and it certainly wasn’t the first time my desire to interact with a human let a toxic individual in.

When I posted a NMS tattoo I got before launch on Reddit, I also got messages telling me to K myself but those didn’t seem to bother me so much. I was confident in myself and my decisions and its par for the course that sharing a tattoo online will bring the attention of many assholes opinions on what you did with your own body.

This current instance on reddit left me feeling pretty crushed, which is annoying because I have some pretty big life stuff I’m dealing with, that makes these DM’s seem a non-issue, I guess it’s just how tame the subject matter was (a joke post about comm balls) and how unmeasured their response was, which I feel is a running theme in the current world social climate, that just really irked me.

I just have to tell myself theres a lot of emotions going around the place with the recent rallys in US and some of the words being spoken aloud at them, and while that doesn’t necessarily have an imediate effect on me in my country, those emotions are still finding their way online and seeping out through peoples posts and behaviours because that’s what happens when you feel powerless to change the things that threaten your safety the most in life.

When I was in my teens, I learned that if you were going drinking in the town centre, you went with your mates. To walk into a bar where you weren’t known, on your own, was like having a big neon target over your head. There was invariably some nutcase who wanted to start a fight with you.

The thing you need to know about this situation is that people who pick fights with random strangers in bars either rapidly become crippled or dead, or they’re very good at it, and have practiced for years. Statistically, the chances are you’ll get the latter.

These days, social media has become very similar. There are people who live to fight, to insult, upset, and degrade - it’s a bear pit, and those who survive have become very good at it. If you react to a provocative statement, you put that old neon target over your head, and there are queues of trolls just waiting for the smell of blood in the water.

I served for 10 years in the fire brigade. When we attended a serious traffic accident - people trapped and injured, or dead, a crowd would always gather. They didn’t help - they just watched. Sometimes a major incident would attract hundreds of them. We called them “The Ghouls”. It was like they were feeding on other people’s pain and misery.

Again, social media follows this trend. There are people who don’t troll, but they like to see others being torn apart and bullied. It has become a spectator sport - and the social media companies are well aware of its income generating possibilities. They could ban and exclude the trolls. They could provide effective moderation, but they don’t. Conflict generates clicks.

Just returned from me and my son helping a woman password protect her smart TV and her router. The man in the apartment next door was changing the channels on her TV and told her so and then told her she was too dumb to stop him. She showed him. She called us.

I love it. Absolutely love it.

I do give helpful comments, links to NMS Wiki, and occasional punny replies at reddit.

I’ve been lucky only to have 1 reply that was a flame type.

I do try to avoid controversy.

Working through the language files to piece together all the main story parts (Atlas Rises/Abyss/WeekendEvents/etc)

Came across this entry and I had to take a break for laughter

I am over 70, and it hasn’t happened yet.

It’s one of the secrets of older people. You never really grow up - you just get sufficiently wrinkly that you can fool people you did.

I’ve read that appreciation of humor in language is a sign of above average intelligence.

Congratulations!

Pictured : Typical Irish man on his way back from last orders, looking for any after sesh with his bag of cans.

Matt Damon actually went viral here recently during lockdown, because it looked like he had climatised and become a bag of cans man…

Had to look it up. I had just had my daughter and I missed a lot of movies for quite a few years. YT TV has it available then I noticed that costs $72/month… :eyes:
Will have to find a way to watch it.

Any Terry Gilliam movie is a good time. They made a really bad TV show based on it recently. Avoid if possible.

I actually own three copies. A VHS I can’t find, a dvd missing it’s cover aaand a blu ray, intact.

Id give if I could, just find a pirate ship and pretend you borrowed my disc, same result

Very much worth it. Brad Pit and Bruce Willis both acting their heart out. One of the best Time Travel movies I know.
Haven’t looked at the netflix series. Like Snowpiercer, the movie was bloody perfection, and I didn’t see any need to experience a drawn out lesser version of either of them.

I subjected myself to the SnowPiercer tv show knowing it was never needed and would probably get cancelled before it gets to the point.

I still had fun but not enough to suggest it over the movie. It’s there if folk really can’t get enough of Ice Train or Sean Bean dying (before the show even starts! A new record for Sean Bean!).

A new Bong Joon-ho movie is surely not far off at this stage. :eyes:

edit: Oh my i’m out of the loop. was meant to premiere in 2024 but pushed back due to writers strike messing release schedules for studios.

It’s an adaptation of a sci fi novel ;0; Has a jan/april 2025 release date depending on territory.

Here’s a fun coincidence, from the description of the book it is adapting, titled Mickey7

Space colonist Mickey Barnes, a.k.a. Mickey7, tries to survive in a **beachhead** colony on an alien world.
