I still think the triumph of the remake is the exterior scenery. Different species of tree have different bark. They have different shaped leaves. The leaves are individually drawn - the lighting on them changes as they move in the wind. Same thing happens with the grass and the flowers - individual leaves of grass, individual petals on the flowers, with individual movement, and dynamic lighting on all of them. I can’t even imagine the processing power required to do that.

Yes! Nothing is flat. It all has dimension and movement.
I have had a few crashes on Xbox but nothing I have not been able to reload and approach differently to avoid the trigger. I think Xbox is having to pant its way thru parts of the game but still, a very good experience.

Well, if they had realistically shrinking horse balls in the cold in read dead redemption, it is obviously expected that they’d have realistically flopping flip-flops while riding a bicycle in the heat of GTA. Common sense, really.

I encountered my first serious bug. Trying to close the Kvatch Oblivion gate, I found I couldn’t take the Sigil Stone. It would disappear when I touched it, but it didn’t appear in my inventory, and the gate didn’t close. I tried a dozen different ways round it, loading previous saves and changing my playing configuration, but always with the same result. I couldn’t progress the game any further.
Because I’m on PC, I was able to close the gate with a console command - which seems to have solved the problem for now.
It’s a bit worrying - Oblivion had hundreds of bugs, some quite serious - which have been known to the community for 20 years. It seems both Virtuos and Bethesda have decided to ignore this knowledge, and reproduce all the bugs, exactly as they were, whilst also introducing some of their own.

I had no issues but I closed the Kvatch gate early on. I played the main storyline until I got Martin to Cloud Ruler Temple, then set off to do my own thing. So far, all the gates have closed for me and I have done at least a dozen.

I find myself in a similar position. I raided bandit and marauder dungeons until I had a full set of glass armour. I raided Oblivion gates until I had a Daedric longsword. I delivered Martin and Jauffre to Cloud Ruler Temple, I located the Mythic Dawn hideout at Lake Arrius caverns - and there I will park the main story - possibly for months.
For now I’m going to settle into exploring, side-quests, and randomly raiding the bad guys. I don’t want to complete the main quest - I want those Oblivion gates open. They’re the source of the best loot.

If your Oblivion athletics skill is high enough, you can bounce off water. It’s much faster than swimming. The timing, however, it crucial - mis-time the bounce even slightly, and you willl sink, and end up swimming anyway.
When you get to the plains of Oblivion, many features are cut off by lakes of lava. If you can bounce off water, you can also bounce off lava. The thing about the timing is still true, though. Miss it even a little, and you’ll sink. But whereas you can swim in water, lava is not so forgiving - so it’s a high-risk strategy.

Handy to know. Some of those Oblivion plains are very complicated. I went into one with a 2nd gate in it but I could not reach it. It was surrounded by lava. Not sure I had ever seen that before.
And I have had a couple that seemed to have no path towards the main tower so I did some fancy jumping to climb up places I am sure I was not supposed to go.

Just throwing it out there that I’m quite enjoying your Oblivion chatter.
I never played it previously (only Skyrim) & it does look very pretty.
I’m just a bit nervous about committing to a PS5 version…In fact I haven’t even checked if there is a PS5 version. I just presumed there is.

That’s one of the wonderful things about Oblivion. Unlike many modern games, in Oblivion, there are no places you’re not supposed to go. Your powers, skills and mobility improve throughout the game - and if you can reach a location, then that’s what you’re supposed to do.
Consequently, you can find odd rewards and Easter eggs in the most unlikely and inaccessible places.
As far as I remember, on PC it’s even possible to go outside the map, and visit Morrowind and Skyrim - it requires a change to the .INI file, and the landscape is only crudely formed - there’s no towns or buildings, no trees or NPCs - but there’s a vast amount of unused landscape outside the game boundary.

Since closing the Kvatch gate, and dropping Martin off at Cloud Ruler, I find Oblivion gates are popping up all over the place. I can’t, however, work out the mechanism behind their appearance.
Some of them seem to have been put there before you arrive - you can see them in the distance as you approach. Others seem to appear only after you have visited an area. So, for instance, I swam down the Niben to Leyawin, trying to boost my athletics skill. On the way there, I saw two Oblivion gates. However, coming back, I saw five. Two were already there before I visited - three only appeared after I visited.
It’s very confusing, and I fear I’m now going to have to search the whole map twice to find them all.

It does seem like hell has broken thru the gates and is trying to consume the land.
I am working the main quest, Aid For Bruma. Each town seems beset by 2 Oblivion gates. I defeat the one then after reaping praise from the local monarchy, I exit the town only to find another very close by.
This has resulted in a few unexpected deaths. One of the roadside Inns no longer has a proprietor. Many horses have been slain as well. One gate was on an island with one of the Oblivion tower bridges stretched across the water.
I have so many sigil stones. If only they were worth something.

They can create the most powerful enchantments you can make. Well, if you went down the magic user route, that is.
