You’d be even sneakier with a full set of chameleon armour.
I finally stopped playing Minecraft.
The hardback guidebook for Dwarf Fortress finally arrived after three months of delay due to supply chain disruptions.
So now my Minecraft addiction is a Dwarf Fortress addiction.
I hadn’t played it properly since the ASCII days, enjoying the QOL of the steam version.
I wasn’t expecting my first fortress in years to last long but I’m four years in and just passed the 100 population threshold.
Will share pics of the guide book and my adventures when I can pull myself away long enough.
Oblivion will have to wait a little longer. Really enjoying hearing about everyone’s adventures in Tamriel
It would have been handy for reaching Shadowfoot rank.
I had to steal a list of recommendations from a desk in Castle Anvil. The girl I needed to foil was stuck behind the door when she was supposed to be at dinner with the Countess
But I found a way
I pickpocketed her thru the gap between the door and door frame then edged as far as I dared while staying on the other side of the door. Just close enough to pick the lock on her desk and lift the required list.
It was quite funny. I sneaked away, laughing at the fun of it all.
Now I am awaiting contact from the Grey Fox
Sadly, Oblivion and I have reached an impasse. The bug where I couldn’t remove the sigil stone from Kvatch, and therefore couldn’t close the gate, is now affecting all gates and all sigil stones.
I can see the sigil stone - I can place my cursor over it, I get prompted to take it, I press the action key - the animation runs, the stone shrinks and disappears - but it doesn’t appear in my inventory, and the gate doesn’t close.
I have now experienced this bug with every gate tower I’ve tried to close. No amount of reloading or changing play styles seems to solve it. I can’t find any reference to this particular bug anywhere - I must assume it’s rare, and new.
My only option now seems to be to abandon my current progress altogether, re-install the game, and start again. Which is an absolute pain, but the game is just too pretty and too entertaining to give up on.
Is this one of those games where you can open save files in the text editor? Can you find someone else who is at a similar stage and compare save files (the lines that refer to inventory and gates)?
This whole mess is because we found a solution, but we don’t have a problem for it. That’s an annoying state to be in. Humanity is only used to finding solutions to problems, and not the other way round.
Now that’s an example of finding a good solution to a problem. For most calculations, the leaves are flat (which is faster), and the close-up creases and cracks of the surface are an illusion, added later as distortions of the texture (bump mapping).
Hate to hear about the bug. I have not had this issue, thankfully.
Starting again is something we seem to have accepted as part of video game life. At least, this game looks and feels nice enough, it doesn’t really feel like a pain. It’s losing all the leveling that kinda hurts in Oblivion. Chests will give a paltry 15 gold instead of 100+, etc…not having spells and equipment, being penniless again.
I did read of one thing you may want to keep in mind. Apparently the shackles you have on you when you escape the prison, can be enchanted. And they are clothing instead of jewelry so you can still wear rings and amulets along with the shackles. Since you are focused on enchantment, I will look forward to seeing what you come up with
Oh well, too late to turn back now. The game is deleted, and the new download is running. I did back up the save files, though. If reinstalling the game fixes the issue, I might risk reverting to my old saves.
For now, though, I’ll just see if the reinstall does the job. To be honest, it’s fun just wandering around and looking at the scenery. Ultimately, it’s necessary that the game actually works, but for now I can live with losing my progress.
You’ve got the right attitude.
Yeah, those save files are binary and not something human readable (though sometimes ZIP can open files when you add .zip.) I play too many moddable games, so I expect all games to be moddable / save files editable…
OK, started a new game on a new install. The last one stole all my progress, so I’m getting it back as quickly as I can. I maxed out lockpicking and sneak before I had even left the Imperial dungeons /sewers (no cheating - but exploits are acceptable )- if the developers made it that way, I’m happy to use it.
Tomorrow I will max out alchemy and mercantile, and make an awful lot of money.
I just achieved something I gave up on when I played so many years ago.
I had one scroll of chameleon. Saved it til I had to have it. But it ran out towards the end of my escape .
I also had no spells for very hard locks but I did have 125 lockpicks.
Sheer luck got me thru one area as I snuck past a guard fast enough that he only glimpsed me.
Then I got past the Battlemage by going in one door while they went out another.
I must have picked at least 50 locks working the final quest.
Still cannot believe I got it done without being arrested
Oh dear. I am level 1 - I haven’t completed (or even started) any quests - I’m still building up my skills.
So travelling to Deepscorn Hollow, I really should not find an Oblivion gate there. This happened last time - gates appearing too early - and then the gates bugged out, and couldn’t be closed.
Are you sure it’s a bug though? Maybe the guys over in Oblivion just got smarter and fixed a design flaw in their gates…
I have noticed some people saying that the inability to close gates started after they did the aid for Bruma quest where you close all the gates outside the cities.
Others have said there seems to be a cap at 46 gates. If you do the Aid for Bruma quest prior to closing 46 gates, there is no issue with completing that quest but once you destroy 46 gates, none of the rest can be closed
With all I am reading, I think I will leave all gates alone until I complete the Aid for Bruma quest…I will count my sigil stones. I think I have at least 20…
Edit:
I completed the Burma aid quest then headed to an Oblivion gate and had no issues closing it. I have not been to 46 yet so cannot test that theory.
Edit: I keep having the bug where everyone is naked
Some people actually pay extra to get that.
Popped into The Archer’s Paradox in Bravil to repair some things and grab a handful of arrows. Thought to myself, that’s a lot of bellows for such a small fireplace
So I went behind the counter to take a closer look.
Found this laying on the floor
The shop owner suddenly looks very suspicious to me.
Well I’ve now got alchemy, mercantile, sneak, and security to 100. Athletics and acrobatics are over 50. I have 150,000 gold, I’m still level 1, and I would like to avoid levelling up - unfortunately, master level spells, alchemy equipment, weapons and armour don’t become available until level 17. There are things you can do with the high-level stuff that are just not possible with starter gear, so I suppose I’ll have to get levelling. Grinding the various magic schools is much easier if you have high-level spells and potions available.
When I heard it was the same game in its guts with a nice new graphical sheen I was worried about this.
I hit a very similar bug involving the floor plates that open doors in the ancient civilization ruins whose name I’ve forgotten. Something with an A? All white and marble-y.
They stopped working so I couldn’t complete any quests involving them, included the very final quest of the main line and the final quest of the knights of the nine DLC.
I feel your pain sir </3 Getting Nam style flashbacks of my experience with this similar bug twenty years ago
Amusing experience - I levelled up from L1 to L17 - but I still had my L1 weapons and armour. By and large, dealers don’t sell high level stuff, only basics. If you want the good stuff, you have to fight for it.
So here I go, assaulting a L17 marauder dungeon with the L1 iron shortsword, L1 leather armour, and the L1 iron helmet, all of which I found in the Imperial dungeon.
As we say in Hema, “swords don’t win fights, fighters win fights! Unless only one guy has a sword, in which case swords totally do win fights!”
