The Wave emote. Or the “Hey, Over here!” emote as the character expresses when you use it.

Hey, Over here, in my Corvette!

And yet again, I emerge from playing other games, wait through the massive download to get NMS up to date, play* for an hour, and the next day a huge update drops.

*play in this case meaning wandering around my bases figuring out what has changed and trying to remember how my storage units are organized

My guess: We wave both hello and goodbye to folks as the arrive from or depart on a voyage

Theory - The “Relics” Update Appears to be a Test Run for a Future Fauna Generation System

The Relics update gave us a way to display fossils. There are 5 basic types of fossils that we can create:

  1. Quadruped - skull, torso, forelegs, hindlegs, tail
  2. Biped - skull, torso, upper limbs, lower limbs, tail
  3. Reptilian - skull, torso, wings, forelegs, hindlegs
  4. Avian - skull, torso, wings, lower limbs, tail
  5. Protoform - skull, torso, upper limbs, lower limbs, tail

You can take any skeleton part and use it in any of the 5 basic forms. All the skeletal parts are interchangeable. To create a creature generation system from this basic framework, Hello Games would simply need to create a “living flesh” model for the body part and appropriate animation.

This can be done with flora too. A tree has 3 basic parts; trunk, branches, and leaves. Hello games would create different trunk types, different branch types, and different leaf types and simply find a way to randomly interchange them and you can get a great variety of trees.

So I think, Hello Games is working on BOTH a new fauna generation system and a new flora generation system. These new systems will be used alongside the current fauna and flora generation, similar to how we can now design our own ships and also acquire the old school non-customizable ships.

What you are describing here so well is procedural generation, that’s basically “what we are paying them for.” I rather think it’s the other way round, they replaced their existing living animal models with bones and switched off the existing animation to create the fossils.
And I agree, they have been improving over the years, very curious what they will use this system for and what that will look like (cute furries in Light No Fire etc.). :grinning_cat:
