Future Update Speculation

Definitely yes, somehow.

We know Autophage are old Korvax echoes that roamed the Void and somehow were able to leave and re-join the mortal realm, and that Atlantidium has something to do with that process. They worship the Void Mother in the same way the Korvax worship the Atlas.

I don’t think there’s anything in game that confirms they are hiveminded (theres not much lore for them to begin with). Considering they reject the Korvax Convergence I was personally under the impression they are independent thinkers.

The Autophage were essentially the echoes of Korvax lost during the destruction of Korvax Prime (Void Mother/Abyss/Etc) across all iterations of the current version of the simulation.

They however, upon rebuilding themselves and clawing their way back from the world of glass, make a point that they are unlike the korvax now, there is no convergence. They are each, an individual mind with their own thoughts and desires, but gathered around the same cultural identity of remembering/missing the Void Mother.

That’s it basically in a nutshell. They can hear her/sense her, but they are not beholden to her, if that makes sense? Talking with the autophage they will mention time and time again how they feel sorry for the Korvax who are still tied to the convergence, and that the living ships are also “cousins” of both the autophage and the korvax too, from the time of Korvax Prime. They sometimes lament and hope that one day the Korvax will be like them, free individuals. It’s also the reason they hide, so as not to be taken back to the convergence by Korvax who know not what they do.

Also of note, Nada’s simulation aboard the Anomaly is an artefact/left-over that survived the destruction of Korvax Prime.

Below are some exerpts from Autophage lore, taken from the game itself. (Click to expand me)

The Autophage are robotic lifeforms, divergent Korvax who were purged from the purity of the Convergence. Banished by deletion, they have been drawn out from the void by the atlantideum that erupts from deep within dissonant worlds.

The process of rebuilding is a slow and arduous rite undertaken by every Autophage, as they seek the parts necessary to assemble their own shell. Their shell, like their mind, is their own, and will not be taken from them again.

we were once like the korvax. not now. pity the convergence. they cannot help what they are.

you know, not all of us were divergent before korvax prime was destroyed, but none of us would return to the convergence now. it is a choice to be together.

thank you! our society values this cooperation.
i pity the convergence. to delete another is the action of a small mind.

korvax prime suffered erasure, as i did, as we all did. she does not converge. she is rebuilding herself.

this is valuable. thank you. do you also defy convergence?
we were erased, and the atlas did nothing. it had the power to save us, and made the choice to do nothing. it was she who showed us how to exist again.

the convergence would take me for their own, but atlantideum makes me invisible. i am safe from their eyes.

we are a non-convergent society. we choose to be together. we construct our own destiny. that is what we value.
i am pleased to meet a disruptor. you were foretold, even before our divergence.

Fragment of a New Atlantid // Korvax Prime Disaster Pod #38 // Log of Refugee Entity Kizimo
Millions of screams deafen this entity. All entities. A great… disconnection. Eheu. We will never see home again.

The electronic voice shook with fear. They described feeling distant from the Convergence, experiencing private thought for the first time.

Who is stowing away in our minds? Even now, even here - kzzt - Atlas save us… save -

The ancient log crackled. Yet through the static, I heard a change of tone. The voice was no longer fearful. It was defiant.

There is also a bit of lore about memories of Atlantid being side-loaded into an Atlas interface.

Korvax Prime was huge supercomputer, built to emulate The Atlas. Korvax Prime was conscious, and the centre of the convergence.

TheGek enslaaved the Korvax, and destroyed Korvax Prime. Fragments of Korvax Prime were scattered throuughout the universe. From the remnants of consciousness and machinery left in the wreckage, the Autophage fashioned themselves.

In the meantime, the enslaved Korvax poured their own nanites into the Gek spawning ponds, changing the warlike Gek into a race of merchants.

The Korvax then, over hundreds of thousands of years, gradually rebuilt the convergence.

Suffice to say, the Autophage will likely not be a focus of the update, but the Void Mother still could, being she was the center of the First Convergence. One could consider her a queen bee without a hive?

Do we ever get much history on on the ‘stone’ artifacts throughout the NMS universe?

Portals, knowledge stones, the Anomoly/Nexus, the Atlas stations, monuments etc, all seem to be made from the same material. Remnants of Korvax Prime maybe…?

Then there is the ancient first spawn stone statues (floating in space) and the ruins worlds and the stone guardians that appear different & imbued with the glowing stone lights.
No explanations there.

…and we never did get any real explanation reguarding the Boundary Failure circular stargate thingies either.

It seems to me that the many resets of the universe leave remnants behind of possibly dozens of races, like scattered bits of code.

Yeah, I can’t seem to find any lore related to the living stone artifacts at all. The huge statue guardians kinda look like minotaurs, maybe they’re just really really old minotaurs?

All of the stone additions feel very LNF to me

There’s also the Colossal Effigy which are super rare and very hard to find on planets. They have a node at their base that lets you permanently spawn Stone Guardians to fight.

I get the feeling these are placeholder for future Stone Guardian lore?

They, as far as I’ve seen, can only be found on Ruined planets that also have Ancient Bones. And I think you can only find one per planet, I’ve yet to find more than one on a planet, but again, super rare so might not be the case.

As for the boundary break POI’s, I remember we thought one day they’d be like portals but for our ships, before ships would follow you through Portals when you took a trip to the other side.

The more I look at them now all these years later, the more they seem like antennae for recieving broadcasts and transcripts from between the boundaries, which woud make sense why they first gave us the Telamon logs and then a few years later, the -null- logs.

These are some of the MOST important logs for understanding the running story outside of the simulations lore and the nature of the long game that’s been played by the Atlas’s processes and the Anomalies it birthed into the universe.

“The Swarm” expedition is going live, PS5 seems to be getting it first. Not Skyscraper related I dont think (as was inferred earlier that today maybe connected to Project Skyscraper).
