I wish, (for the 20th time), HG would do something to make the DAMAGED TECHNOLOGY more varied.
In a universe of 18 quintillion planetary bodies, we have 90% of them covered with the EXACT SAME OBJECT. That is a ridiculous number of lumps of discarded technology scattered across the universe that could look varied & interesting.
These things have barely changed from day one. Yes, you can access them now instead of having to feed them some random material & recently the sparks changed but aesthetically they are the same old, cone shaped, chunk of unidentified garbage, (possibly a nose cone crossed with a vacume cleaner).
I love NMS.
Iāve been there, loyaly from the begining.
Iāve never complained, even when there were āissuesā. I actually started the first glitch topic here where we could share those funny graphic fails that are just part of computer games.
Iāve been repeatedly astounded by the unexpected updates that continually pop up, filled with content I didnāt see coming. I definitely have gotten my moneyās worth from my NMS investment.
Butā¦
Iām starting to get an eye twitch every time I encounter a chunk of damaged machinery.
Please Sean.
Lets make those lumps more varied. We have a thousand things to build & decorate with.
I think weāre good there.
Perhaps your artists could whip up some DAMAGED TECHNOLOGY variations.
For me.
Before one day, I lose it, throw down my jet pack, rip off my exosuit & gallop off across a hostle biome in a frenzied squealing tantrum, which ends in an embarrassing death while bludgeoning a lump of Damaged Technology with a cactus.
Well, I donāt wish for exactly expedition 7, but certainly more along those lines. More survival mode expeditions would be highly appreciated. I never played anything but survival mode since its inception, apart from expeditions, which often just felt like mindless grind ticking off boxes without any real engagement.
So, I guess weāll just have to compromiseā¦
I have to agree. I also found it annoying and frustrating. However, I must accept that some people actually liked it.
I appreciate the argument regarding skills and reaction times. I am getting old and slow myself - but it wasnāt just skills. Three of my deaths were random, and completely unavoidable (a single bite from a predator that had spawned behind me, two shots from a pirate ship while I was on foot, and being spawned into a heat storm with no resources). It wasnāt just difficult - it was completely unfair.
Itās not good enough to say āOh well itās just an extra - you donāt have to play itā. The Expeditions offer exclusive rewards, and weāve all been with this game for a long time. Weāre completionists.
So yes, I think Permadeath should be a choice.
Hmmā¦ Iām less intrigued about Ex7ā¦
Iāve let a number of Expeditions pass me by because I was thick into writing my ādiaryā - well, or playing Fallout 4ā¦ well, or playing Gran Turismo 7ā¦ Yeah, Iām a man of many interests, including games. Iāve been catching a bit of grumbling about 7 that initially I thought was typical weaksauce intranet grouching. But reading thisā¦ I might just let this one slide by too. Writing is a lot of fun, and safer!
Yeah. Iām not a veteran gamer and not so great at combat. Plus, Iām just not a ālove to killā type of guy. I donāt enjoy killing even when the game requires it.
That may seem odd, coming from a military veteran, but I was in a noncombat branch.
I also donāt enjoy stress in gameplay. As a kid I would nervously jiggle my knees when playing chess, even with my Dad.
So I wanted the āchill game of explorationā that Sean touted. I bought No Manās Sky (pre-launch) both for that reason and to support the procedural generation concept that Hello Games was using. I still marvel at what they can do with basic wireframe graphics and āmaths.ā
I do understand their desire to please varied segments of players, though. Sentinels, Outlaws, and this expedition are more focused on the group with more lust for added combat challenge than I.
I hope for enhanced photography and exploration in future updates, but my wants are not āneeds.ā
FWIW I was in the part of the military tasked with ending life on earth if it was deemed ānecessaryā and spent five years of my life keeping my head wrapped around that in the name of āreadinessāā¦and I avoid killing in game.
Even though Iām something of a shooter veteran - I love virtual gunplay - as well as a real life vet myself, I actually have the same attitude towards the denizens of these games. In Fallout 4, I will typically approach people unarmed knowing full well that most are going to shoot me. Fortunately Iām well protected and well armed to boot, so miscreants donāt last long.
And in my fic, the hero often pulls punches and lets evildoers live because he doesnāt like to kill either. However, heās seen how cruel the universe is, and in a world of tough choices, the innocents live, and the bad guys often donāt so more innocents can live. That choice is hard, and he often laments the role he finds himself in, but doing nothing is worse.
Thatās a slightly different matter than being thrust into an arena where Iām stuck with the binary choice of āI die or they die,ā and thatās something I fight to get out of tooth and nail. Or do over.
Long military history here. One grandpa charged solo up a hill and took many. The other manned a gun in St Michel. 2 different WWās and then I married into the 101st, 5 months before Desert Storm. Then there was a wreck in the dark in the desertā¦
I have played many shooters. For years I revelled in getting rid of the bad guy. But the bad guys keep coming. NMS does not make you kill other Travelers or NPCs. For that, I am thankful. Sentinels donāt bother me so much but even then, I let them be unless I am forced. I never ever want to spend my NMS time running for or defending my life. So I avoid aggressive sentinel planets and seek peaceful shores.
With how many storage spaces we have now and how many possible things to collect. I would absolutely love to have an auto-allocate/sort feature. For example, perhaps give us the ability to individually tag storage slots with a specific material or item and it will lock into that spot(s) and when you move things from your ship or personal inventory to your freighter, it will go strait to where you dictated that item to go. Or when your collecting items after a frigate expedition, it goes strait to where it should go.
Maybe have it come in the form of a new hirable NPC that manages your āwarehouse/inventoryā in order to enable the tagging feature.
And for Atlasā sake, let us name our 15 saves! (Sigh)
