If it ran the demo, I would think it would be ok…? Settings can be cranked down. Maybe the mag lev might be an issue…do you have fps running where you can watch it? If so, run the demo again and keep an eye on it.
Was great fun to play again. So much better with a full 3D world, although it also made me realise how hard it must have been to make up for the low res video of the time, losing some sense of realism because of it.
The starry expanse somewhat reminded me of the mechanics used with Ahnonay (URU). Loved how well this was done and integrated into this Riven remake, changing the final puzzle.
I also liked how we now got to get outside in the 233rd age, although nothing much is present. It shows what Ghen uses the heek for. We also find a book burning up, which really peaked my curiosity.
Are we supposed to recognise the age shown for a moment?
I did not recognize the Age. Just saw it as a failed attempt. I remember from the books how terrible Gehn is at writing Ages. No talent or perhaps too blinded by his need for adoration.
I also really loved seeing and hearing Anna. Brought a tear to my eye as I remembered her story from the books and the life she and Atrus had in the cleft.
Yeah I was not crazy about the character rendering but since they are not present for much of the story, I did not let it bother me.
All in all, excellent.
My favorite moment was when I discovered my first animal glyph. For me it was the one in the grotto when you first arrive on Jungle Island. It was done so well, I clapped when I discovered it. Well done Cyan!
Oh and I had this one moment that scared me, because I did not expect it.
Imagine going into a room just to meet eye to eye with a huge version of Ghen.
So I believe the idea is that he has been watchiing you the whole time and was apparently just in the room where he would record these vids. I walked up really close to it and he looked down at me which was quite unnerving.
And I just looked up Age 234 which is the burned book outside in Age 233. In the previous game, it was unknown what happened to the book after Gehn is trapped. He was writing it as a home world for the Rivenese. I guess they decided to reveal its fate in this version. Failed, like all the rest.
There is also a book on the table inside. Age 235 which is also failed.
A nice added feature is the spyglasses that you see in various areas actually move to follow you around because Gehn is indeed watching you. Catherine was correct. He was watching the whole time.
Oh yes, he sure has been. Although I knew this was the case, I only first noticed how obvious, once I managed to use the submarine and get to that center part on Jungle Island.
GOG does not have overlay for this game, so I had not made screenshots other than the ones for the notebook. Now I made a few to check the Age numbers on the few books in Ghen’s 233:
The one burning away outside, is also a descriptive book and indeed shows 234 on the cover.
Although I agree we can consider it a failed attempt, it does give us a glimpse into the age he has been attempting to write for the Rivenese. That just makes it very interesting to me, as this is a first…
Now as for the descriptive book on the table inside, I would have to assume it is meant to become Age 235. However, I bet Ghen is as bad at writing as he is at counting, because it shows 9 (*25) + 10 but also shows 5. It makes it a symbol that can not actually exist, as it should be just the curve for 10, minus the horizontal line for 5.
This found it’s way to me at 6am after being woken for the third consecutive time by a 24 HR blood pressure monitor
The thumbnail is misleading and kinda makes you think they are a younger person thinking this is a real time screenshot or something, but they absolutely know what they’re talking about, even wrote letters to the Devs in the 90s wondering if they used GI with mental ray (gleamed from discussion in the comments)
