Desolation Update

I returned to the current Community Quest system in my Permadeath Save to get some easy QS & raid the local, (& also rather easy), derelict freighter.

It gave me different goodies to what I posted a day or so ago.
This time I got lots of ‘purples’ but most notably I acquired 2 Salvage Frigate Modules.

Does this mean the ‘rare’ items are altered daily… or was it a permadeath vs normal thing…?
I’ve not encountered this kind of variation between seeded locations before.
Interesting…

I missed the mainframe room, but was up waaaay too late and we can’t save while on a derelict freighter, so I didn’t pursue that. SIGH.

I did, though, like the creepy, bloody hue to my Living Ship when docked at the derelict freighter.

Agreed. My first derelict had the full creature infestation. I could not help but think of the “Aliens” movies.

Yeah went and searched and came across a 24slot A-Class which I fitted with a scatter blaster - its definitely my go to for derelict freighters now, and have also added a Plasma Launcher !

I get now the use of plasma launcher ala Quake sending grenades round a corner to clear out the way head

Also this weekend I had some mixed/interesting derelict freighters - one did not have any pulsing alien goop or nests and just a few floating jellyfish which if you walk in to give damage but are easy targets to blast away. doors were just a click away to open, no goop to shoot away

Then my next mission [new day] was in a freighter with goop and nests, and proximity/movement warnings if the nests were stirring - there seemed to be 3 nest states - Agitated [any further movement/activity would then trigger a burst of critters], Stirring and At Rest/InActive.

I missed an on screen warning and one or two of them burst, those critters are fast and not easy targets ! Personal Shield is very handy while getting aim right to scatter blast!

aah…

So collect the living slime when available in the derelict freighter by shooting the festering pustules.

Use refiner to convert living slime to runaway mould…

Use refiner to convert runaway mould to nanites…

I do like the new capability of accessing the freighter’s storage containers from anywhere as long as you’re in the same system as your freighter. Picking up an item in one container and dropping it in another is handy too.

It always bugged me that the storage container interfaces behaved differently than the other inventories. Now that we have standard inventory interaction through the freighter tabs, hopefully they’ll extend that to the container interfaces themselves.

Recent patch has fixed my already glitch ridden Capital Ship (missing sections). Much better now.
Loving the improved inventory shuffle upgrades. (Found you can shuffle directly to suit inventory from storage boxes provided you have the appropriate Freighter upgrade installed).

Seems to be more debri & textures in derilicts now… anyone else notice that?

I am now experiencing a few random crashes while exploring on planets. Got to be careful to prompt an autosave (ship jump in & out) every 10 minutes or so or I lose progress.
Very random with no impending lag or action I can pin-point.

Freighter 2nd & 3rd tier colour changes not working on Legacy save. Ship still changes colour as its mood changes.

I have had this phenomenon happen with my legacy saves as well. I didn’t mind it, because it was like I kept getting new freighters for free. (The alien race working on it also changed regularly.)

Finally, this is the kind of content I’ve been hoping for since Atlas Rises! Beyond was cool, but not really to my interests and in my opinion it made NMS feel more like an amusement park than a space odyssey.

I’m hoping the “significant updates” planned later in the year continue to take NMS in this darker direction.

What are your thoughts fellow travellers?

I moved you to the current Desolation thread.
I am loving it even though I have yet to find a Freighter with the scurrying critters or other things from the trailer. So far, all of mine have been filled with jellies. Still loving it!

It’s not so much the thematically darker direction for me. NMS always had plenty of darkness between the lines.
But the fact that we finally have a new procedural system with vast potential is very exciting, and I do hope they dig into that path. Not just by expanding the new system to wider applications, but also by adding more of them to fill out different volmes in the possibility space. I mean, let’s face it, this is essentially the first significant procedural system that has been added since launch.

Today I finally played a bit, I did a Nexus mission, to raid a sentinel depot. When I went to the factory to get the coordinates, I blew up the door using the ship. When I ran to the door the debris was still there. You could push it around, I can’t really remember if that used to be the case.

Have visited a few derelicts and run into an infrequent problem.

In passages the object occupies two places, disappears from the old place and the old place does not allow passage.

Two versions exist but in the same location and spin. Again not allowing passage.

Have also come across an invisible object in the bays but could get around those.

In about a dozen derelicts explored in 2.6, I sometimes encountered invisible barriers that blocked gunfire but not player movement. Since the 2.61 patch, I constantly encounter player-blockers, often in those narrow hallways, preventing me from completing the mission. For now all I can do is bug-report and wait for a fix before attempting any more missions.

Also, similar to @sheralmyst, I’ve only seen one derelict with bugs. My single successful mission since 2.61 had tons of slime sacs everywhere, but no actual bugs. Jellies have also generally been sparse, though a couple derelicts had some swarms. Most of my missions primarily feature automated defenses. In fact, about 90% of my missions are all the the same ship with the same story, the SS Kaniw IV, just in different layouts per-system. That seems off, though I haven’t reported it yet. Is this a common experience for everyone else?

THIS!

I think you nailed what feels so important about Desolation. Yes, the update itself has great new features, but it’s finally seeing a recognition of how procedural systems can expand the gameplay in more exciting directions. Seems like a game based around procedural generation would have gotten there sooner, but better late then never!

Similar darker-atmospheric implementations like @Wickerson suggests would certainly be cool. I’d also love to see procedural alien constructs that inspire a sense of confusion & wonder. Procedural ruins featuring traps to avoid & puzzles to solve. Procedural campaigns - not just quick single fetch-quest missions, but multi-part storylines to follow.

I completely agree this path is the most exciting possibility, it’s the main untapped gameplay potential of NMS since the beginning. I truly hope HG run with it.

(and also more variety  )

This is what I’m hoping for too, using the new procedural system in other areas of the game. For instance I recently started a new game on PC and was led to a crashed freighter pretty early in the story. The signal I was following is outside in the middle of the crashed freighter as it always has.

But I thought it would be really cool if they could implement the new system so that you had to explore the interior of the crashed freighter to find the source of the signal, rather than it sitting outside.

I mentioned this before in another thread, but I can see how this could be used in other areas of the game. Here are some ideas of procedural dungeons:

  • Ancient Ruins
  • Crashed Freighters
  • Abandoned Space Stations
  • Abandoned Bases
  • Special Cave complexes (old mines?, animal tunnels?, large geodes?)
  • Ruined Cities (wishful thinking)

I am completely enjoying the new derelict freighter dungeons. I really hope they do expand upon them in the ways listed above and more.
